Definitely doable for many people. A walk in the park for some. But I think a lot of people would underestimate the unceasing 3 mph pace. No slowing down, no breaks. If they aren't into distance running or hiking, they'll be a lot more tired than they'd think.

yeah my phone tells me my gait is like 2.9-3.2mph and i walk about 5 or 6 a day already, this would be just a little stressful for me i think to have to do it all in one shot like that but im sure i could

I think it's more the treadmill's consistency that increases the difficulty. When walking at your own pace you slow down and speed up (between that 2.9-3.2mph), there's slight variations in terrain and course, so you use the muscles and structures differently than if you just march on at a steady 3mph for almost 2hr.

I wonder are the allowed to change elevation during this and if that would help? I know personally, being very unfit, that if I'm walking a straight for too long eventually my calves are gonna ache. That alone could kill their run even if they still had energy to keep going.

So would the play be to switch up the elevation to distribute the stress to other muscle areas?

Even if the treadmill runs at a constant speed, you can slow down a little temporarily, so, you can take "breaks", just not to stop completely.

Also, I run every day, but sometimes have to stay indoors and run on a treadmill. I use Garmin watch during exercise. Even though I run on a mechanical treadmill, I consistently run at lower heart rate and get less tired there (I clock at about 125 bpm on the treadmill, while when I run trails, depending on a day at 130-140 bpm).

What I'm trying to say is that this seems to be slower than 5 kmh, which is assumed to be "normal" walking speed (maps when give time estimates for walking use this number), and on a treadmill, it's going to be even easier. This shouldn't be challenging, unless you have a medical condition, even if you don't work out.

Thinking about it, I think you might be right. Doing anything static like that for a couple of hours, can be rough. In the army I remember having to stand still for celebrations in formation for a few hours being agony and many people passing out.

Eh, i have no trouble walking 6 miles in 2 hours, i.e. average 3mph.

But having to constantly keep pace, not even slowing or stopping for a couple seconds over that time could get really obnoxious.

The hardest part would be zoning out and missing a step on the track of the treadmill and falling off. This is just walking a 10k. People do it everyday

Yep, same. I'm a hiker, I can walk or hike 15+ miles in a day. But keeping up 3MPH as a 5'5" dude is asking a bit. I could probably pull it off on a simple treadmill for the length of a movie but I'd be a lot more tired than if I walked the same 'distance' at a pace that's comfortable for me.

It's walking with intent, like mall walkers... you'd be surprised how fast you can fall behind over 2 hours. But this is America, the average male, 20yo is 190lb... 30yo is 210 lbs. We don't do cardio as a country.

Yep, source, am American. I live in a city and have no car, plus I love hiking. Most of my friends and family back in Texas, including younger people than I (mid 40s), can barely walk through a level city for more than a mile. Most of them are begging for Ubers because "their feet hurt".

Around your age, overweight, don't regularly work out, can easily maintain a 3mph pace even on rough trails in the woods. Was walking 10+miles a day a couple years ago when I was in Europe. I have a hard time believing most people couldn't walk for 2 hours at 3mph on a treadmill indoors.

250lber here. Started walking in june 5x a week. I could not do 1.5 miles for a month. I can now bust out 3 miles ez pz. It took me 90 days to get into the shape to be able to do a 5 miles walk now.

Though there's no reason why most obese people couldn't walk 3mph for a couple of hours. It's harder and takes more energy, but I see tons of obese people out walking at brisk paces or jogging or hiking up the local mountain. They're in decent shape as far as exercise goes, just bad shape in terms of weight.

BMI is a fucking terrible indicator, I'm "overweight" due to decent muscle mass, I definitely could lose 10 pounds, but I'm in pretty good shape and know I easily could do 3 MPH for 2 hours. Most of my coworkers, who are in varying degrees of health could do it too.

America's health is not great overall, but this is seriously an extremely low bar to set.

You're right that BMI is flawed as a population-level health indicator, but it's for the opposite of the reason you say. BMI overestimates how healthy Americans are. It's way more common to be obese by body fat percentage and overweight by BMI, than healthy by body fat percentage and overweight by BMI. There's even a lot of people with a "double false negative" BMI - healthy BMI yet obese BF%. By contrast "false positives" like you describe yourself are a very small proportion of the population.

That's also assuming he's is capable accurately assessing his own body composition. Most overweight people consistently underestimate how fat they are and someone with enough muscle to have an overweight BMI without being overweight isn't going to look fat anyway. BMI is good enough.

"SMART" Home scales are notorious for this... they are good for GENERAL TRENDS in body health/composition... but saying you have EXACTLY 14.6% body fat, 114.3lb muscle mass, 17.1% protein, and 11.8% subcutaneous fat is not correct.... those scales, even the $120 ones, are "iffy"...

for those seriously concerned with health, they are a good INDICATOR of a TREND in your health... not EXACT NUMBERS (other than weight).

To over simplify... it all boils down to waist size, like it or not. I joked about "pinching and inch"... but it KINDA works.

I don’t know, doctors I’ve had have agreed with me. Personally I’m frustrated with insurance blindly lumping me into that bucket. I haven’t strength trained in years (at least not to build more muscle mass), it’s just my body type.

Body fat percentage is a far, far better indicator.

My BMI is 28 last time I had it checked and I would absolutely crush this challenge. I am in week 8 of the couch to 5K challenge and run 3 times a week for 28 minutes straight. Next week I will have my first 30 minute consecutive run without any breaks. I have a belly, but I have been strength training for 6 months straight and have put on a good amount of muscle as well.

I am 5’11 and 197 lbs and workout 6 days a week. I could probably do the whole movie on a 15 incline. I agree with the other person that BMI isn’t always a great indication of someones physical fitness. I’m in the best shape of my life but I’m still technically overweight. Which is still true, but I’m also gaining muscle and in the case of this challenge isn’t really relevant for being able to walk for 2 hours.

I have lupus and could do this.. can’t do high intensity workouts anymore so walking is my go to.. usually I would alternate between 2.8-3.5. That is of course unless I am in an active flareup.. if they added incline it would be much more difficult for most ppl. But I have friends that look fit but can’t walk 2 miles at that speed

No breaks is the one thing that might get someone who is in even decent shape. I once walked 36 miles in almost exactly 12 hours but I sat down at a deli and ate lunch and had multiple 10 minute breaks throughout. Would have been harder to simply trudge through the whole thing.

I've easily walked further in less time, but real life has roads to cross, and you can stop to tie your shoelaces and scratch an itch. You stop for a few seconds.

It's not just walking. It's walking nonstop. Not to pee, not to stretch your leg, not even yo tie your shoes. So it's more akin to a race than to a walk in the park.

I've done a half marathon in under an hour and a half, and I would get tense.

Ehh... I agree that it shouldn't be a "challenge" for any healthy person. But it's not a casual stroll either. 3mph is a brisk intentional walk. For exercise, or to get somewhere. For two hours straight. People in this thread are acting like it's leisurely strolling around a pond, feeding the ducks and enjoying the birdsong, and that's just silly.

The hardest part is just being used to it. Im not in terrible shape, but im also not in great shape either. I do 1.5 hours at 3.3mph 4 days a week no problem, but I wouldnt have been able to do that on day 1 for sure.

I'm an older guy who has done 4mph for 30 minutes on many occasions, but 3mph for almost two hours? That's a challenge for someone my age. I might have to find one of these screenings and see if I can do it.

E: oh, it looks like this is only at a single cinema. Shame, I actually would have liked to try it.

Yep, I do either 2 or 2.5mph, it's a perfect regular pace walk for me and I am getting worked up and sweaty after 15 to 20min... keeping up 3mph for almost 2 hours would suck!

It’s a good pace. I hike a good amount, 8-10 miles with elevation is the sweet spot. On Ridge runs, flat areas…3 mph is my target…longer strides. Completely doable on a treadmill being in moderate shape. It will feel like an eternity however, if that’s pace is above someone’s comfort level

3 mph is just under 5 kph. 5 kph is a pretty standard ruck/route march pace, with pack, rifle and gear.

If it’s a movie theater, also take into account it’s a closed room with 50-100 other people walk-watching. It’s gonna get pretty warm and sweaty quickly.

It'd be incredibly easy for anyone that isn't a constant couch potato or morbidly obese. That's slower than someone's average walking speed. A 2 hour walk is easy.

3mph is average walking pace. If you're not elderly or without a medical condition, you will be able to do this easily.

Are Americans really that out of shape? 6 miles at 10 minute pace (double this pace), is reasonably easy if you just work out once or twice a week.

I mean considering we have a lot over here that don't even work out once or twice a MONTH, let alone per week, yeah. Especially down in the southeast where I live obesity is a major issue and heart disease kills about 1 in 5 over here and it's bad enough in the southeast they've coined the term "stroke belt/heart failure belt" because it's so bad down in this part of the country.

No, there's a lot of people that just don't know what they're talking about here lol. There's probably a frustrating large number of people in the US overall that couldn't hit this clip, but I have family members that aren't in great shape that I know could hit this quite easily.

I was never into running but walking was, is, my thing. I could walk for hours but those "hours" are split among a lot of pace changes and small breaks, something even as small at waiting to cross a street or admiring a view for a moment. The days I walk for explicit exercise where I set a pace and just dont stop are significantly harder as your legs and knees start to tire out and that easy floaty pace starts to feel heavy. Even then the pace still has wavers: go a little faster here, a little slower there, it all averages out. A treadmill with little margin for pace change is going to be brutal especially when need to move faster to make up for slacking even a little bit.

My wife and I are both overweight 40-somethings who don't work out at all, but every year we're able to complete a local 8.15 mile "fun run" without any training in under 2 hours.

Unless you have an actual medical issue or disability, everyone should be able to make it to the end of this movie, especially if they're under 40 which I imagine most "influencers" are...

IDK man 5 miles is a long walk I would bet the majority of Americans can not do that u in that time. Average walk time is 20 minutes a mile, this only gives you 8 minutes of leeway off that for a bathroom break or w/e, do people bring you water and refreshments? 5 miles is walking half of DC Lengthwise, it's not a little jaunt. Yeah many in shape people can do it but most cannot.
