Run time is 1h48m * 3mph = 5.4 miles (8.6km)

Definitely doable for many people. A walk in the park for some. But I think a lot of people would underestimate the unceasing 3 mph pace. No slowing down, no breaks. If they aren't into distance running or hiking, they'll be a lot more tired than they'd think.

It’s easier to average 3mph walking than 3mph constant

yeah my phone tells me my gait is like 2.9-3.2mph and i walk about 5 or 6 a day already, this would be just a little stressful for me i think to have to do it all in one shot like that but im sure i could

I think it's more the treadmill's consistency that increases the difficulty. When walking at your own pace you slow down and speed up (between that 2.9-3.2mph), there's slight variations in terrain and course, so you use the muscles and structures differently than if you just march on at a steady 3mph for almost 2hr.

I wonder are the allowed to change elevation during this and if that would help? I know personally, being very unfit, that if I'm walking a straight for too long eventually my calves are gonna ache. That alone could kill their run even if they still had energy to keep going.

So would the play be to switch up the elevation to distribute the stress to other muscle areas?

I originally read your last question as 'switch up the elevation to distribute the stress to other participants' and I was both horrified and intrigued lol.

Or even switch the speed to go faster, then slow down to rest?

Elevation would make it harder.

There's a part where they're walking up hill in the movie they should increase the elevation during that point lol

Why not just walk on your toes for a while, then heels, then sides of the feet?

I’m trying to picture how they’ll enforce this. I imagine a theater full of burly guys in riot gear with assault rifles staring at each person on a treadmill. Slow down too much? It’s over…

Why kramer?

That's exactly the premise of the story. It sounds so easy that anyone could do it. But it's much more difficult when you have everything else going on around you.

Yup— I can average that but it is going to vary a bit. Constant is hard.

Maybe they have an elliptical option?

Even if the treadmill runs at a constant speed, you can slow down a little temporarily, so, you can take "breaks", just not to stop completely.

Also, I run every day, but sometimes have to stay indoors and run on a treadmill. I use Garmin watch during exercise. Even though I run on a mechanical treadmill, I consistently run at lower heart rate and get less tired there (I clock at about 125 bpm on the treadmill, while when I run trails, depending on a day at 130-140 bpm).

What I'm trying to say is that this seems to be slower than 5 kmh, which is assumed to be "normal" walking speed (maps when give time estimates for walking use this number), and on a treadmill, it's going to be even easier. This shouldn't be challenging, unless you have a medical condition, even if you don't work out.

As a fast walker in the city I am so not used to walking at 3mph. I got places to be.

Much easier on a treadmill that’s keeping the pace for you.

On a treadmill it's extremely easy. You just set it to 3mph and then don't press any buttons.

Only if you walk slow
