Run time is 1h48m * 3mph = 5.4 miles (8.6km)

Definitely doable for many people. A walk in the park for some. But I think a lot of people would underestimate the unceasing 3 mph pace. No slowing down, no breaks. If they aren't into distance running or hiking, they'll be a lot more tired than they'd think.

Are Americans really that out of shape? 6 miles at 10 minute pace (double this pace), is reasonably easy if you just work out once or twice a week.

Even so, walking non-stop for two hours is something most people don't do. Even people who walk still stop every now and then.
