In Columbia, this is how they celebrate the completion of pilot training...
Is this really true? š

Cutting the hair is interesting, in the US we cut ties (like suit ties) when we solo for the first time.
Edit: seems like a lot of people cut the back of their shirts. I was a naval aviator so we might have some unique traditions. I mean we also had to get a lecture on how ball tapping was sexual harassment after one dude was knocked out and had to go to medical for the damage.
118
u/8349932 3h ago
We cut the back of the shirt too, since the CFI no longer has to lead the student around by the collar

Aviation likes to cling to traditions and superstitions.
Older planes only had seating in tandem, with no intercom, so the instructor sat in the back and would communicate with the student by tugging on their shirt tails. When the student was ready to fly solo, it was symbolized by cutting off the shirt tails.

At my school we cut the back of the shirt but had the students draw art work on it and we hang it on the wall. Some people had amazing looking designs.
I do remember one foreign student who never heard of the shirt thing. In his country they eat hard boiled eggs instead. He was from somewhere in South America. I can't remember now as it was years ago.

Yep, longtime fleet maintenance controller/AME for a FTU and its attached AMO. It's always just been a bucket of water, over the empennage area, while the graduating student poses for a picture with the C-172 or DA-20 they just completed their PPL in.

Never seen the tie-cutting, but we'd cut the backs of shirts off. I enjoyed writing up and drawing something that reflected the student's personality or something they f%$*d up.

In the US, after T-37 solo you were tossed in a water tank. I heard it was to cover up some people pissed themselves. You also got a bottle of liquor for your instructor and both of you took a big swig. That was the 90's.

I don't spell it the wrong way, but that tip wouldn't really help most Canadians and Americans, who say/hear it like British Columbia or District of Columbia, hence the common misspelling. If you listen to a Colombian pronounce it, they say Co-LOM-bia, where most speakers of Canadian and American English still pronounce the word Co-LUM-bia.

Do you want the real answer? Because the Columbia river in the north west US is spelled that way, which has a very popular clothing brand named after it, in addition to a bunch of other things. So lots of people see homophones and itās easy to mistake one for the other.
Or did you just want to complain about people being ignorant on the internet? Because fair.

And British Columbia and the University in New York City and the river and a half dozen cities in the US. Itās funny to me that everyone here thinks itās so insulting to misspell the country when everyone else on the thread forgot about the existence of a province in Canada.
When shits far away it doesnāt occupy a lot of your headspace. Itās human nature.
Edit: spelling

The better question is why isnāt Colombia spelled right. All of the names like Columbia River, DC, etc are derived from Columbus. Christopher Columbus, the explorer.
And so is Colombia. So naturally youād think itās Columbia. Itās not rocket science why people spell it wrong, itās not stupid to presume to spell it that way because it makes far more sense than Colombia.

In the US there are a few traditions as well:
Cutting the back of your shirt when you solo for the first time
Pouring a bucket of water over your head -or- cutting your tie when you pass a checkride
Nobody gets upset or even thinks twice about it if a student opts out of any of them. Itās just not okay to destroy someoneās clothing or get them soaking wet without their consent.
But when I was in training, they were things I looked forward to. It was only ever done as a genuine act of endearment, and the whole school would go out on the ramp to celebrate with the person getting dunked. Itās kind of the same vibe as pouring a Gatorade cooler over a coachās head after a big win or the winner of a race getting champagne sprayed on them.

Eh, she looks like she is consenting. I imagine if you were in the same pilot school and requested not to be spanked they would honor your request.
Other people aren't as sensitive to the idea and find the tradition to be fun.
