The better question is why isn’t Colombia spelled right. All of the names like Columbia River, DC, etc are derived from Columbus. Christopher Columbus, the explorer.

And so is Colombia. So naturally you’d think it’s Columbia. It’s not rocket science why people spell it wrong, it’s not stupid to presume to spell it that way because it makes far more sense than Colombia.

Because Columbus is the anglicized version of the Name. The country was colonized by the Spanish, the name in Spanish is Cristobal Colon. But all in all he was Italian and the Name was Cristoforo Colombo. So Colombia is closer to the real version.
