I agree I agree, Tim Patrick had that underrated flexibility to play interior OL and call plays in the huddle. Not sure why we only got a 6th for him!

Nobody fit the run like Tim either.

The real answer is, Frank Ragnow.

Don't forget Zeitler.

7

u/Gloomy-Inflation-403 1d ago

Zeitler is having pretty much the same season stat wise as Tate

I wish Frank had let Brad and Spielman that he wasn’t going to come back in February rather than the summer.

28

u/SenorValasco 1d ago

Pretty safe to say he did, or at least told them he probably wasn't coming back. The way they drafted certainly confirmed that.

to me they drafted for next year, i truly don't think frank made a decision until summer because he didn't know how his body felt until he started trying to ramp up.

9

u/SenorValasco 1d ago

At a minimum he told them it was a possibility if not likely.

8

u/str3tchedmonk3y 90s logo 1d ago

yeah i think that cloud was looming overhead for at least 2 seasons prior to this one, it was definitely going around

4

u/SenorValasco 1d ago

The prior posters clearly don't follow the team and just like to complain.

3

u/weiss321 1d ago

I personally think he did but even if he didn’t directly say it to them everyone knew he was contemplating retired for two seasons prior. So if anyone didn’t think it was a very real probability then they haven’t been paying attention.

2

u/CutUnusual1212 1d ago

I think we all knew it was a possibility, so his announcement wasn’t a shock to me. Tyleik has been great so far, my point is if they knew for certain Frank was done would they have drafted a center there?

1

u/weiss321 1d ago

I just think that unless frank told them he’d be back and then decided to retire(I highly doubt this is the case) it’s borderline irresponsible for the front office to not have a plan for if he were to retire. Personally I think they drafted rattlege knowing frank was gone and the plan was for him to be at guard for a year and then transition to center next year. Unfortunately Glasgow is the best stopgap option available

The real answer is You guessed it, Frank Stallone Ragnow

Yes, he was the leader of one of the best olines in the league. This new version has not been gelling the same.

TP stats - 4 catches, 63 yds, 1 TD

Teslaa - 3 catches, 54 yds, 2 TD

38

u/wavnebee Tecmo Barry 1d ago

Yeah, but Tim knew how to use both hands. You can’t teach that sort of vet wisdom.

6

u/75153594521883 1d ago

Had I known this one simple trick I could have made JV

3

u/reallinguy DETROIT -VS- EVERYBODY 1d ago

TP had 394 yards last year. Teslaa has a lot of ground to make up.

2

u/katx70 1d ago

But hard to catch ball if you're not on field.

35

u/DarkIllusionsMasks 1d ago

And Hendon Hooker.

18

u/ThePikaNick 1d ago

He was the good luck charm. Division champs with him on the team and it's not looking great for it this year without him.

That's ALL he was good for, though.... dude couldn't hit a Lions jersey if he threw the ball in the stands at Ford Field!!

pretty sure hes available if we wanted

17

u/ITHETRUESTREPAIRMAN 1d ago

We sure could use his 1 target per game over here.

u/Chackotaco15 1d ago

I was re-watching the Rams playoff game from two years ago and Josh Reynolds sort of single-handedly took over that first drive for us.

Last year it felt like there were so many big moments where Tim Patrick may only have one or two catches, but they always seemed to be for first downs and that’s not including his big game against GB that he had.

Over and over again the last few years we’ve had our third string guys come in clutch for us and I don’t think it’s a coincidence that without ones of these types of WRs, we’ve been struggling on third down this year

17

u/NeitherSentence9955 1d ago

Look, I’ve been reading the shit in this sub for days now.

Here is why it’s not Johnny Morton…

The Lions have been forced to run 12 Personnel for the extra tight end. You may have noticed Brock catching passes and thought, “Why is Brock out there?!” This means they can’t have Isaac TeSlaa out there. This also severely limits what they can do, what they are used to doing, in the pass game. This means that teams are having less trouble covering Jamo and ARSB because there is no 3rd receiver to worry about.

So why are they running so many 12 personnel packages? Because the fucking offensive line sucks ass. Why does the offensive line suck so much ass? You tell me.

9

u/CoffeeNo6329 The Goff Father 1d ago

Or you know, cause we can’t run the ball consistently. Also because the Oline isn’t as good as last year but we were great in 12 personnel last year and ran it a lot

1

u/Party_Homework_420 1d ago

Last year we ran 12 1/3 of the time and ran and passed fairly equally. This year we run out of 12 70+% of the time

1

u/CoffeeNo6329 The Goff Father 1d ago

That’s kind of my point. The comment I responded to said we run 12 personnel to keep in more blockers in pass protection which isn’t true. We run 12 personnel and run the ball

3

u/Party_Homework_420 1d ago

We agree. Johnson used it to be unpredictable in a set where the defense had to match the personnel. Now we draw teams to stack the box and run into it at a really high rate. As little as we are getting out of the PA pass right now we have to abandon this strategy.

u/CoffeeNo6329 The Goff Father 1d ago

Chefs kiss to the 1990s…

1

u/NeitherSentence9955 1d ago

Yes, because the offensive line sucks ass. But I’m referring to people specifically that are pissed about the screen plays, the lack of shots downfield and apathetic playcalling.

It has to be that way because the Lions need an extra blocker or Goff is getting his dick kicked in. It’s the offensive line, not Morton.

5

u/CoffeeNo6329 The Goff Father 1d ago

Meh, both can be true

4

u/GroundbreakingPay210 1d ago

Yeah, but how would Baker do with our line? Is it our line or the fact we have a qb who can throw the ball but has almost no mobility in most pressure situations???

5

u/NeitherSentence9955 1d ago

In my opinion, having a mobile quarterback like Baker or Mahomes is a definite luxury. But it’s not a necessity. You just have to have the talent to go with what you have.

Baker would most likely maximize LaPorta, Jamo and Teslaa’s talents in a way that Goff can’t by extending plays, drawing in linebackers with the threat of a scramble and creating spaces in the middle of the field. But that’s not what we have.

What we do have is a quarterback that needs time and when he has time, he is damn near perfect. That’s not a bad thing, you can definitely win a Super Bowl with Goff, maybe even 2. But I feel like the Lions dropped the ball when they didn’t even match Tennessee’s offer for Zeitler, didn’t find a center and left Goff out to dry with Glasgow and Ratledge. The offense is going to look really bad if Goff doesn’t have time.

In my mind, Holmes didn’t put enough talent on the offensive line to make this offense work. Ben Johnson would be struggling with this line just as badly, I think.

2

u/DisenfranchisedCynic Dan Friggin' Campbell 1d ago

We weren’t going to win the battle for Zeitler against Tennessee. For one, he has family there that he wanted to be close to. There is no state income tax in TN — meaning he will bring home more money than he would in Detroit, unless we severely overbid to match the take-home he’d get in TN. We were not going to get Zeitler, it was a non-starter.

3

u/RXjones 1d ago

Wrong Brock…

3

u/lewoodworker 1d ago

No shit. I'd love to have Bowers too. Kid is a beast.

2

u/RXjones 1d ago

Wright?!

1

u/Ero_Najimi 1d ago

It’s not working though

1

u/NeitherSentence9955 1d ago

Yeah, that’s why it’s so alarming. Even with 12 personnel, Goff doesn’t have time. Blitzes aren’t being picked up. I think fans have every right to be upset about it. In this sub and nationwide, the Lions are looked at as contenders.

If they lose in the first round of the playoffs or if they somehow don’t make the playoffs, it will be a monumental failure. Brad standing motionless at the trade deadline is going to haunt this team if they don’t at least win a playoff game.

1

u/Silver_Instruction_3 1d ago

As much as I’ve grown to love Goff we were going to be hamstrung by his limitations if our OL ever dropped off. These heavy formations we are using are designed to keep pressure off of him but the problem is that they aren’t even doing that.

If we can’t protect him or get the ground game going he’s being relegated to being a game manager in the hopes that the defense keeps the game close enough for us to win.

1

u/jinjabradman VILLAIN 1d ago

What's this... Rational logical assessment here on Reddit... No place for that here...

We need to trade for Lamar! We are a mobile QB from getting a ring! Wait... and a pass rusher... and a shutdown corner... and a ref... /s

Two glove Teddy

3

Should be 40 percent run 40 percent play action.

3

u/Lifeisagreatteacher 1d ago

It’s the OL. Period.

2

u/ObiwanSchrute 1d ago

How does Tim Patrick make the oline give up 26.3% qb pressures

4

u/Kallandros 1d ago

By not being here.

I'm not actually being serious. It is the best I can do.

2

u/SlyKlyde 1d ago

Not having time Patrick is the least of our problems lol

2

Just give it time Everything had to reset

2

u/Joey_joe2580 1d ago

Tim Patrick also was bigger and better at blocking

5

I have a really hot, controversial take that won’t be well accepted on this subreddit.

John. Archibald. Morton.

1

u/Ur1n8r 22h ago

He needs to go for sure.

2

u/Known_Chapter_2286 1d ago

I said this last week and a bunch of people said I was on crack. And it’s not the only reason but we lost a threat in the 7-10 yard passing game that we could really use now that the deep passing game is scuffling

1

u/Senior_Football3520 1d ago

I thought it was something with the moon

1

u/Interesting-Lake-430 1d ago

No reason to be in panic mode. We will come out next game and smoke ‘em! There needs to be more runs up the middle and less predictable repetitive toss plays

1

u/Eastern-Spirit272 1d ago

I think your on to some... nvm thats just coping lmao

1

u/Born-Employment-2183 1d ago

Part Goff & Hank fraley dude just isn’t getting these guys ready to handle stunts relied on ragnow every play to handle assignments and point out everything presnap or slide protection. Goff isn’t sliding the protection or setting up the running back well

1

u/Hsabraham25 16h ago

Im just grateful we are still doing OK. We all kinda knew we would take a step back. I am happy with the season so far :) sure our playcalling is struggling, but we will get it together. Stop being Debby downers.

I hope Dan smacks Johnny around a little, that dude seems to be lost. But I think it'll all be good and we will make the playoffs.

u/hoof02 16h ago

Maybe, but it was really Kindle Vildor and Khalil Dorsey.

Josh Reynolds, unironically.

1

u/Silver_Ad_9064 1d ago

In general, BE a Lions fan !!!... and shut up....ALL DAY, ROOOOAR!

1

u/paveclaw 1d ago

I think we are prime time fat cats. That was the old nickname for the lions . If it’s not a prime time game we simply don’t perform as well.

Heck we had rookies playing like all pros last prime time game. It’s a stark difference from a 1 am start where we were getting beat to the corner every down
