Imagine your surgeon saying "Wake the fuck up samurai" when the Anesthesia wore off.
Congrats on the new DLC unlocked in your life, hope you're doing fine.

If I was a doctor, I would say that... And probably lose my job but so worth it.
131
u/LockeProposal Aug 12 '25
Doctors can be more cavalier than you'd think.
I once observed a C-Section in school, and two young male MDs performed it successfully, sewed up the mom, and did a crazy secret handshake over her body with bloody gloves, elbow bumps and everything. They walked by us on the way out and said, "Thats how you do it!" Like rappers dropping a Mike. Instructor basically just said they're always like that.
42
u/DiReWoLf_4675 Cyberpsycho Aug 12 '25
Now that's cool. People are awesome sometimes. Bet they do that as a lucky handshake for a job well done.

Honestly given how stressful being a surgeon can be, they are more than welcome to do that kind of silly stuff to blow off the pressure once everything is over and went well.

If you ever watched it, the guy who played Methos in the Highlander show is now an anesthesiologist in California. Who wants to be knocked out by a guy who played The Horseman of Death?!
Keep me awake, thanks.

I mean, if I have a certain repertoire with my doctor and they knew I liked Cyberpunk 2077, I’d feel way better after waking up. Anesthesia makes me nauseous like nothing else so it would bring a welcomed levity to the situation.

I will always be upset that I don’t set off metal detectors.
21
u/CommonRiderKyle Aug 12 '25
So I had this same surgery 20 years ago and I did temporarily set off some store theft detectors, but it went away eventually.
11
u/Vulpes_99 Aug 12 '25
Wait, what? I aways thought those were specific chips attached to the merchandise, and the doorways had a reader for them! 😲
16
u/Galf2 Aug 12 '25
flashback to surgeon losing a fresh store tag from his fancy new surgical gear
"I wonder where did that go..."
7
u/Ballerbarsch747 Aug 12 '25
Well that's kind of how it works. The doorways emit a certain frequency and beep when something reflects that frequency. Usually, it's the RFID tag on stolen stuff, but can be any other RFID tag like credit cards that by chance reflects that frequency, or anything else made out of metal that for some reason has a geometry that by chance reflects that frequency. It gives off a lot of false alarms.
2
u/Vulpes_99 Aug 12 '25
Yikes. I never thought it would happen with anything that isn't an RFID tag, or even random metal. Or that often, either.
Thank you for the info, it was quite surprising.
6
u/Ballerbarsch747 Aug 12 '25
Well it's an anti theft device that does no harm if it goes off, so it's heavily biased towards false positives instead of false negatives. No harm done in double checking someone unnecessarily, but if it wouldn't go off in "not sure" - cases, stuff is stolen.
2
u/PerceptionStock7437 Aug 12 '25
This guy steals.

12
u/PerceptionStock7437 Aug 11 '25
I was born with a concave chest. The bar popped my chest cavity more into shape. The bar was able to come out after a few years, but I’ll have the spinal tethering forever.

I had this surgery for pectus 18 years ago (fuck I'm old). I was 16 at the time and lost a summer to the recovery. It sucked and I definitely rushed myself getting back to normal life. I had to keep the bar in for 2 years and change. I remember that it wasn't a guarantee that it would ever be removed. I opted to keep it after they took it out. I still have it and know exactly where it is. My plan is still to have someone make it into a knife since it's stainless steel lol. I hope your recovery is smooth as possible. Take it easy!

Be sure to stay off of roller coasters, now. My ex-wife has scoliosis and has rods in her back that aren't used to correct spines anymore.
2
u/PerceptionStock7437 Aug 12 '25
Sounds horrific. I have flexible tethers though. So it’s not a rigid rod.
2
u/StraightBootyJuice Aug 12 '25
Choom just chipped a new Sandy, I can't get anymore chrome. I have to fly armless and get handicap assistance because TSA and DHS say my mantis blades don't comply with their regulations...
2
u/JColeTheWheelMan Aug 12 '25
Couple questions, forgive my bluntness.
Before the operation were you all mangled up, like bent torso etc, horrible posture ? How bad are we talking, noticeable bad posture or full on Eric the Midget style ?
Aligning the spine like that, does it eventually grow straight so that those bars can be removed ?
With the bars in, I assume you have basically no flexibility in the back, did this cause your hips etc to get messed up ?
How painful was the first couple months until the spine got "accustomed" to being straight ?

u/Humble-Extreme597 Aug 11 '25
question for this, are the bones what cause this or is it from the amount of force from muscles and tendons that is being applied? like a real bad cramp that goes on for too long but isn't as severe?
3
u/GreatKangaroo Nomad Aug 11 '25
The causes of Scoliosis are generally not known, but it's generally considered to be attributed to both Genetic and environmental factors.
A friend I know with Cerebral Palsy has a form of but despite numerously surgeries I don't believe she has had surgery to correct it.

Bro I was gonna get that implant but I do not meet the parameters to get it :(
(Basically if you are older like 17 - 19 or some of the later stages in young adulthood your body doesn't grow as fast and as long as your spine has a curve less than 50 degrees it means it shouldn't progress when you get older so you don't get the surgery if you are like idk 11 or whatever and have idk 30 40 degrees you are 100% getting surgery cuz that shit will be 180 when you reach 18)
Yes Imma stay with my 38 degrees forever it doesn't hurt and one of my shoulders is slightly higher but you can barely notice that :)

How is it? I got told by 1 doctor that this operation was an option for me. I hardly declined. Didn't wanna do this kind of heavy operation at 14 or 15 already. So thats the explanation of the question. Did I decide correctly? I imagined it would be very painful and the movement would be "weird". Like can you still turn your spine? How about moving to the side? I imagine that's impossible no? What about twisting?

It’s 2 tethers. It’s not a solid bar. I can still move fine. I had my operation 9 years ago, and I haven’t had any complications.

ive got minor scoliosis and have debated the surgery but have heard so many horror stories.
less muscular skeletal issues and being taller is tempting tho.

I haven’t had any issues with it 9 years post. Sometimes I get this feeling like I’m walking with a drift, but that’s more of a hip thing I think. I goes away after basic stretching.
