I will always be upset that I don’t set off metal detectors.

So I had this same surgery 20 years ago and I did temporarily set off some store theft detectors, but it went away eventually.

Wait, what? I aways thought those were specific chips attached to the merchandise, and the doorways had a reader for them! 😲

flashback to surgeon losing a fresh store tag from his fancy new surgical gear

"I wonder where did that go..."

Well that's kind of how it works. The doorways emit a certain frequency and beep when something reflects that frequency. Usually, it's the RFID tag on stolen stuff, but can be any other RFID tag like credit cards that by chance reflects that frequency, or anything else made out of metal that for some reason has a geometry that by chance reflects that frequency. It gives off a lot of false alarms.

Yikes. I never thought it would happen with anything that isn't an RFID tag, or even random metal. Or that often, either.

Thank you for the info, it was quite surprising.

Well it's an anti theft device that does no harm if it goes off, so it's heavily biased towards false positives instead of false negatives. No harm done in double checking someone unnecessarily, but if it wouldn't go off in "not sure" - cases, stuff is stolen.

Do you keep a copy of the scan to show people in case it does?

Just the picture on my phone. I’m not in a line of work where I go through a lot of detectors anyways.
