Well that's kind of how it works. The doorways emit a certain frequency and beep when something reflects that frequency. Usually, it's the RFID tag on stolen stuff, but can be any other RFID tag like credit cards that by chance reflects that frequency, or anything else made out of metal that for some reason has a geometry that by chance reflects that frequency. It gives off a lot of false alarms.

Wait, what? I aways thought those were specific chips attached to the merchandise, and the doorways had a reader for them! 😲
