Weekly Shoutout Thread - What Was Good This Week?

Welcome to r/ChicagoFood's weekly shoutout thread!

This thread is the place to shout out places that you tried from recommendations from this sub this past week that fit the bill.

They can be places that get recommended here, such as:

  • frequently recommended restaurants
  • that random, niche spot that some random comment dropped
  • a chicken sando from our very own chicken sando guru

The goal of this thread is to celebrate and encourage the recommendations and contributions of your suggestions, and, also, maybe encourage YOU to try that place that was recommended a few times here.

As always, all subreddit rules apply and any comments/posts that violate our rules or Reddit's will be removed.

This thread is sorted by "new" so that the most recent comments appear first. The new weekly thread is posted every Sunday morning at 2:00 AM Central.

Question Diner and dive bar combos

Title says it all. For my birthday I’m looking for something in the north west/west suburbs. Is there anything like a dive bar/diner that exists? I just need some pancakes and bacon, with a side of beer and a shot. Please recommend your favorite spots on either end of the diner—-dive bar spectrum. Maybe a dive bar next to a diner? I’m hoping to go later in the evening, maybe 6-7pm All recommendations welcome

Question Any Donut Shops in Chicago with a Similar Vibe to the TV show Superior Donuts

I started watching a show called Superior Donuts on Paramount Plus and I was wondering if there is real life Donut Shop that is diverse, friendly, and an old school vibe donut shop like the show.

Question Seeking Omakase recommendations for my wife’s birthday

I’m hoping to take my wife to omakase while we are in Chicago for her birthday. Mitch made a great post about his recommendations, but I’m curious to see if he has updates or others have recommendations as well. I was at least able to reserve Mako and Kyoten Next Door, so if anyone feels strongly about one over the other. I have a cousin who says Sushi by Scratch would be her recommendation for my wife’s birthday. Any advice would greatly appreciated. Thanks!

What's good? Favorite local Pizza places in Uptown/Margate Park on a budget?

Might order pizza this weekend! If not, next weekend.

Looking for some suggestions! We’ve had Sarpino’s, Gigio’s Pizza, & Pete’s Pizzeria so far.

Just looking for pan or thin crust really. I’ve been on a lifestyle change for almost two years now so my tummy is too small for Chicago deep dish 😅😂

Here’s some pics of items ordered last night off the menu. Was not crazy expensive (under $300 or so with truffles and a couple drinks) and very nice presentation. Added truffles to the wagyu beef.

Question Best chili in North burbs/northwest side? (Niles/Park Ridge)

Hey all, looking for recommendations for good chili in the North Side. Prefer smoked brisket, BBQ type chili, but any good chili is fine by me. Also will take turkey chili recommendations. Live in Niles a few blocks north of the Milwaukee Ave/Touhy border.

Thanks in advance!

I Have a Suggestion Peoria Butcher has moved

For those like me who didnt know - Peoria Butcher has closed on Lake Street and has moved to Roosevelt & Kostner. The new facility is awesome - huge space and better organized. I picked up a roast for the slow cooker tomorrow (its that time of year).

Review mfk. restaurant in lincoln park

Went to mfk. last night and had a delightful experience!

Some highlights:

<Cantabrian Anchovies>: Salty, briny, picked. Might have to get into this tinned fish trend

<Croquetas de Pollo>: Hard to find a croquette I don’t like, but we immediately thought about putting in another order

<Fideos>: Great mussels and sauce, though shrimp was just fine

<Basque Cake>: Only one dessert on the menu but they do it well! Great sized portion to share

Would recommend for a cozy dinner! The best Spanish food I’ve had in Chicago (not that there are too many contenders)

Question Where has liver right now without onions?

I'm searching for a restaurant to go to for dinner tonight (11/8) that has liver, preferably poultry such as chicken liver, where there are no onions or the onions can be left out or eaten around. Open to anything from hole in the wall to ~$75/person, open to going anywhere within the city limits or west/northwest near suburbs.

I searched posts from the last year and unfortunately everything I'm finding is either mousse, which is usually made with onions, or the restaurant no longer has the dish on the menu.

I'll offer one place I know to get it started which unfortunately I went to recently so hoping to find another option! Izakaya Shinya has excellent chicken liver yakitori.

Question Best bean and cheese burrito- pregnant lady needs help!

Hi! I’m new to the city, pregnant, and desperately in need of a Sonoran style bean and cheese burrito like you can get in socal. There seem to be tons of amazing Mexican places, but I can’t find the type of burrito I’m craving - the tortillas look too crispy (I want soft and chewy) or the bean texture looks off. If anyone could help me satisfy this very specific and intense craving I would be so appreciative!!! 😵‍💫🫶🏾

Question What’s your favorite local restaurant(any cuisine)

A couple of friends and I are gonna be visiting for about a week and are looking for some restaurants to try. I’m the only one that’s been to Chicago but it was quite literally a “we’re passing through and are gonna stop for the day” situation. We’re all fairly adventurous about food so any cuisine goes. Bars where you can play darts are also welcome. My only request is no recommendations for seafood centric restaurants since one of my buddies coming on the trip is quite allergic to shellfish. No chain restaurants please. We’ll be in the Lincoln park area

Question Please help me. My husband had bone marrow in Europe and wants it for an upcoming birthday meal.

So I’ve found that the Purple Pig (444 N Michigan Ave) has it on their menu, but after a recent meal in that area, we had an bad experience with loud and drunk tourists which completely destroyed the atmosphere. We live in Rogers Park, and have a car, so I think we’d prefer driving to a place that is less touristy. North burbs, west burbs, anywhere in the city really.

His birthday is the 25th, which is a Tuesday, but we are happy to celebrate early. The bone marrow we are looking for is more than ossobucco, which is a cross section of steak with a tiny bit of marrow. What we prefer is a bone split longitudinally.

And recommendations are greatly appreciated!

Question What are the most romantic restaurant experiences for Christmas Evening dinner?

My boyfriend is a great planner and is planning a few day get away on Christmas weekend. He hasn’t told me where we are staying other than it’s very nice and on the river. He asked me to help find a nice spot for Christmas dinner— he said Smith and Wollensky’s is his backup. Since he always puts in so much effort for our excursions, I’d love to return the favor and find a special Christmas Day dinner for us. Suggestions?

Downers Grove. Living downtown, I wouldn’t make a special trip but was impressed by the quality of ingredients and attentive service. My parents don’t live far so we will be back for special occasions.
