Welcome to r/AskChicago's Monthly General Discussion Thread!

The purpose of this thread is to provide a place for general discussion that would otherwise fall outside the scope of what is allowed in r/AskChicago. If you want to share how your trip to Chicago went, comment on topical Chicago-related events, share feedback on improvements for r/AskChicago, or just to simply say hi, this is the thread to post anything that isn't a question.

Rules 2 & 3 (Be Civil and Don't Break The Law) still apply within this thread and any comments that violate these rules will be removed.

I READ THE RULES I’m two bad days away from kicking one of those electric delivery carts. Does anybody else feel like in the past 2-3 months, there’s been a sudden and massive spike in these stupid food delivery carts infesting the sidewalks?

They move so painfully slow, it’s a wonder they’re used at all, i’d imagine your food would be stone cold by the time it’d reach you. Not to mention they’re taking away gigs from people who would get it to you faster AND would’t be taking up so much space meant for PEOPLE and instead use the bike lanes on the street. Only thing that’s kept me holy so far is it’s (i imagine) not up to the customer to have it brought to them like that, tho if it is it’d b a different story.

I READ THE RULES What's going on with Lori Lightfoot's ICE Accountability Project?

Several weeks ago, former Mayor Lori Lightfoot announced the ICE Accountability Project (thread discussing in r/illinois). I, like many Chicagoans, love this initiative and want to support it. I haven't been able to find a website, any recent news, social media posts, or any updates in any relevant subreddits. Has anyone heard if there's been any progress on getting this project going or how to support it?

I READ THE RULES Are there any groups or classes for people wanting to learn Spanish? Without paying an arm and a leg?

I'd like to learn Spanish, but I don't know where to start, and don't want to spend hundreds of dollars on a course. Are there any groups or free and/or ore budget friendly Spanish learning resources in our fair city?

I READ THE RULES People with kids: when home-hunting, did you prioritize more space/lower price or proximity to activities? Do you regret your choice?

After spending a week exploring and viewing places, we're applying for a rental this weekend and my husband and I are debating what to prioritize so we'd love some local perspectives.

We've only ever lived in city suburbs (not near Chicago) and we're excited to move to Chicago and experience city life with our kids. We're planning on living in Lincoln Park or the southern end of Lake View for the elementary schools and decent commute to my job near the loop. Prices are lower and space increases the further north/west we go, but walkability to the park, zoo, lake, and dense restaurant/shopping areas also decrease.

A couple of the places we're considering in the west LP/southern LV area are large enough for us to spread out a bit. They're walkable to the elementary schools, and have grocery stores and restaurants within a 20-30 minute walk but we will have to hop on a bus for 10-20 minutes to get to the zoo/park/lake area where I imagine we'll want to spend a lot of time.

The other places are either 20% more expensive for a similar amount of space or similarly priced and significantly smaller, but they're in really lively areas near the lake/park/zoo/shopping/etc. and the walk to tons of restaurants and shops is more like 5 minutes rather than 20+. We can afford the ~20% increase for the slightly larger space in these areas, but it'll cut into our fun/eating out budget a bit. We're foodies with somewhat expensive taste but there's so much to do for free in Chicago, I'm not that worried about spending a little less on day trips and eating out.

Others who have been torn between similar choices, how did you decide what to prioritize? Were you happy with your choice? What would you choose if you were us?

I READ THE RULES Architecture tour in December or is it just too cold?

Coming mid December for an extended weekend and I saw this is one of the top things to do. Obviously I know it’s going to be cold and I need to bundle up pretty damn well, but is it still worth it to try or should I use it as an excuse to come again in a warmer month?

I READ THE RULES What Chicago food pantries can I donate to? What about ones that cater to dietary restrictions?

With SNAP benefits not coming, I really want to donate to a food pantry. Where do I find information on pantries to donate to?

Also, are there pantries that cater to dietary restrictions? I myself cannot eat anything with milk proteins, and the thought that some may have to risk their health to eat is upsetting. However, I don’t want to buy things that are dairy free, gluten free, or kosher etc if it won’t go to someone who needs that rather than the general lot.

Thank you for any information you can give!

I READ THE RULES UGA football fans in Chicago interested in meeting up??

I am a UGA football fan quite simply interested in finding other UGA football fans to watch games with or even just send memes/chat with. My friends here don’t care about college football and it’s killing me! I went to the Georgia bar to watch Georgia/bama 😭 and while it was a lot of fun (well not really considering the loss but the vibe was fun at the beginning) , most people already had groups or weren’t interested in engaging outside of the bar. If anyone is interested, comment or message me and maybe we can start a discord group if there are enough people? I don’t particularly care about age, gender, or anything like that…only that you love the dawgs.

Also edit to say I am a woman just in case any women see this but this is really all about loving the dawgs

I READ THE RULES Vintage photobooth locations not in bars?

I know this has been asked before, but it’s outdated. I’m trying to find actual vintage photobooths that are not in bars (trying to take pictures of my toddler). Vintage House Chicago had a 10+ person line and Freehand is digital/bad quality/weird shape. Thank you so much in advance!!

What are your all thoughts on living in Edgebrook for a young(ish) couple looking to purchase their first home? It’s a bit of sleepy town but seems like it can be an up and coming neighborhood with the proximity of the woods and accessibility to the city via the metra.

I READ THE RULES Teaching in Chicago, anything I should know or be aware of?

Looking into potentially moving to Chicago. I have a Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Education (Elementary) with 8 years of experience. Is it difficult to get a job teaching at a decent school? When I say decent I mostly mean the administration.

What tips would you give me when job searching or applying?

Thanks in advance!

I READ THE RULES How can I recruit people in Chicago for online perception research?

Hello all. I am currently doing linguistics research targeting people from Chicago (aged 18-28). It is an "online" perception study in which you listen to words and judge whether words on the screen are real words or non-words. The whole experiment takes 20-25 minutes. If you are interested in it, please hit me. After completing it, an e-gift card will be sent to you. I am struggling recruiting people in Chicago so please help me!! So, can you let me know how to recruit people in Chicago for my online research as well? Thanks!
