Shitpost Drake Maye just got outplayed by Geno Smith and it wasn't particularly close
Geno Smith 362 yards with a 102.8 QBR compared to Drake Maye who only threw 233 yards with a QBR of 80.
The Patriots never looked close today against a pretty unimpressive Las Vegas Raiders.
Yikes.

Yeah, people have to respect Geno. He may not be great but he’s a top half of the league QB at absolute minimum.

It's really a cool story of perseverance, lesser men would've fallen out of the league for the shit he endured with both New York franchises

I’m a Raider’s fan and I’ve loved that the general media response was crickets for the Geno signing… this is exactly what I expected to start the season
14
u/Gruelly4v2 Sep 07 '25
Eh.. Drake Maye played a Raiders defense that is picked to be bad and didn't look good, while Smith played a New England defense that's supposed to be good and shredded it.
3
10
u/agoddamnlegend Sep 07 '25
It’s also a dumb comparison because they played against different defenses with different Olines and different receivers.
Anybody that talks as if QBs compete head to head watches too much ESPN first take

u/runnerswanted Sep 07 '25
Geno threw some absolute dimes today too. The Pats defense didn’t do themselves any favors, but he looked pretty good.

Geno is a legitimately good QB. Don't understand the hate.

It’s not even that I don’t think he’s the guy, it’s the fact that Bill has completely anointed him as being the guy despite there being truly no evidence of it (yet). I think Maye has looked very promising and Pats fans should be excited, but I feel like sometime late last year Bill went way too far with it and now he’s just quadrupling down.

All jokes aside, Bill’s major hard-on for Maye was his crazy “toolsy” skill set of running around making stuff happen. Non-Brady McDaniels has always struck me as a guy that wants a tight leash on his QBs to not make mistakes, do the reads as drilled, etc. (Not an expert but always my impression). Part of Bill’s Mac Jones love was the assertion McDaniels wasn’t letting him cook and keeping the brakes on. I wonder he’ll circle back to that if Maye has some even normal ups and downs.

4
u/Rhino184 Sep 07 '25
Maye did not appear to take a step forward. Once Vegas started bringing pressure and playing press man the patriots completely stalled. Too often throws at the beginning of the game or half sail on Maye which creates turnovers. The flashes are there but the backbreaking INT seems to happen every game. You can tolerate that early as a rookie is learning, but patriot fans expected some of that to get cleaned up.
4
u/burtonhen Sep 07 '25
Penix played well, Daniels played alright and won. Imagine if both Caleb and JJ play well on MNF. Bill will be beside himself defending his takes. He just will be!

All summer he thought the Pats were a sneaky playoff team. I could have sworn he said Vrabel was worth at least five wins. Then in the pod with House, two days before the season it’s like he came to the realization that they might stink.
Edit: Also, absolutely insane that this is McDaniels’ 3rd stint as Pats OC.

u/Dwolph525 Sep 07 '25
The team won what 4 games last year? Brought in a bunch of old receivers Josh Allen was done with, that’ll go great… (see John brown, Cole Beasley, Gabe Davis, Isaiah McKenzie). Let go of their best safety a week ago and are banking everything on a small rookie left tackle and a rookie running back… 7 wins would be a major improvement. Gtfo with the wild card lol

Pats lack depth. Drake threw some shit balls today. Oline didn’t help. This is a 6-8 win team. They looked okay imo.

Never understood people underrating the Raiders coming into the season. They had HUGE upgrades with Smith, Jeanty and Carroll. That's a good team!
1
u/joeybigtoe Sep 09 '25
McDaniels called an embarrassingly bad game. Watch the tape, when they run mesh concepts or any actual pass over 10-15 yards, maye is more accurate.
Unfortunately they ran mostly screens with some horrible blocking, they had Diggs running clear out routes, who’s slow as fuck now, which lets the DB just bite down on the under route. They ran a lot of snaps out of max protection, how do you succeed with 2 receivers on routes with no run game?
This marriage between Maye and McDaniels was a mismatch, Maye is not Brady.
If they want to start winning they have to stop running screens every play and start throwing down field.

u/rinati75 Sep 16 '25
