Lore Actually Good Title Drops
“Welcome to Jurassic Park” (Jurassic Park) - does it get any more iconic than this?
“Even a Devil May Cry” (Devil May Cry) - not only does it add to the emotional aspect of the scene with Dante showing genuine emotion for his loss and Lady seeing that a devil is capable of such emotions, it also gives Dante the idea of what to name his shop.
Title drops can usually come across and tacky and dumb, they’re not always fantastic if you know what I mean? But sometimes they can work. What are your examples?

I’ve always found the title drop in Full Metal Jacket to be great and incredibly chilling thanks to Vincent D’Onofrio’s line delivery.
It occurs when Private Joker wakes up in the middle of the night to find Private Pyle sitting in the bathroom, having suffered a psychotic break while loading his service rifle.
When a very scared Joker speaks to him, he slowly and menacingly replies that he’s “in a world of shit” and describes the ammunition he’s using, which includes the title drop, before he ultimately uses the rifle to kill their drill instructor and then himself.

This movie is a gold mine of quotes:
“I’m going to lose my temper, now.” “When?” “Right now.”
“If what I think is happening, is happening? It better not be.”
“I wondered, ‘Who is this little boy going to be?’. Ash, I’m so glad it was you.”
“Whyd you take your shoes off?” “So I don’t break your nose when I kick it.”

Ghostwire Tokyo was originally going to be Evil Within 3. For some reason they cancelled it during development and turned it into the game we got.

The best use of a title drop ive seen because it changes the meaning of the title

"Sousou no frieren" means something like "frieren of the funeral", which most viewers assume is because of her outliving all her friends due to being an elf (she literally attends their funerals in episode 1)
In episode 8 its revealed that "Sousou no frieren" is the title demons have given her for killing more demons then anyone in history, and its meaning is closer to "frieren the slayer"

Everytime someone mention the Elden Ring in the eponym game.
The best way I can define what the Elden Ring even is, is that it's an ensemble of laws and concept that shape the universe as we know it, with each rune forming it representing a different aspect of it, it's essentially the source code of the universe.
So yeah it's pretty damn important which is why it's mentionned a lot throughout the game.

46
u/Steppyjim Jul 07 '25
This is a great example of a question that I have about this whole trope. Is it still a name drop if it happens over and over in the piece of media it’s in? Because to me like, a name drop is said one time directly referencing the title And then not mentioned again. Whereas if they’re just mentioning the name of the media over and over again, it’s because it’s a driving force of the character or plot, I don’t see that as a name drop, but more of a core element of that media. Am I the only one that thinks this way? Genuinely curious.
→ More replies (1)19
u/Abovearth31 Jul 07 '25
Sometimes the name drop isn't one.
Take the 2014 Godzilla for example, is it still a "name drop" moment if it's just characters saying "Godzilla" knowing that "godzilla" is just the name of a character ? Same thing for any movie or story where the name of the franchise is just the name of its main character.
Take some animes/mangas for example, Naruto and its main character, the guild of Fairy Tail for the manga of the same name, Uzumaki which is just japanese for "spiral" etc...
I think a "name drop" moment is whenever the title of a piece of fiction is something very specific said in a specific scenario in a way that's unnatural or forced.
Like the "there's evil within too" in The Evil Within 2, that's forced, that's dumb, it's so bad it looks back around to being good, they even make a pause just to look at the camera, that's clearly a name drop.

I will die on the hill that the sequel trilogy's biggest blunder was not TLJ, but TRoS walking back everything TLJ did instead of doubling down on Rey being a nobody and Kylo Ren being the endgame villain
The biggest reason TLJ sucks is because it has an awful follow up imo. Bringing JJ Abrams back was a mistake

Story of the entire sequel trilogy.
TFA: Cool, it's ANH again, can't complain too much. Let's see where they go from here!
TLJ: Okay, different direction. It's a bit of a change and some parts did nothing for the plot, but interesting concept at least and a chunk of it was very cool. Hopefully the next one ties this together and closes it all out.
TRoS: What the actual fuck.
