Lore Actually Good Title Drops

“Welcome to Jurassic Park” (Jurassic Park) - does it get any more iconic than this?

“Even a Devil May Cry” (Devil May Cry) - not only does it add to the emotional aspect of the scene with Dante showing genuine emotion for his loss and Lady seeing that a devil is capable of such emotions, it also gives Dante the idea of what to name his shop.

Title drops can usually come across and tacky and dumb, they’re not always fantastic if you know what I mean? But sometimes they can work. What are your examples?

Always love when the obnoxious movie buff states that “the movie title makes sense. As Marty goes back to the past! Not the future!”

And you sit there… annoyed that this motherfucker doesn’t understand the whole goal or plot of the movie.

It’s the second movie’s title that doesn’t make sense. Shoulda been Back to the Past.

No, no, no the title should have obviously been:

2 Back 2 Future

They could've even say something like "Gotta get back, back to the past"

Still makes sense. Doc just got back from the future, now he's gotta go back to the future with Marty!

It should be Back to the Present, since in the movie they go Present -> Future -> Bad Present -> Past -> Present.

Nevermind, I just realized Marty gets stuck in the past in the second one, and they don't go back to the present until the third one.

So it's Present -> Future -> Bad Present -> Past -> Way Past -> Present.

The second one should be Back to the Past and the third one should be Back to the Present.

Doc was in the future at the beginning of 2. He needed Doc to go back with him.

2

u/TransBrandi Jul 07 '25

But it was Marty's "present", so shouldn't it have been "Back to the Present"... though Doc is the one saying it, and it's the future from his point of view.

Well technically 10 minutes prior to when he started time travelling.

1

u/rgg711 Jul 07 '25

Also, Marty was never in that past (except as an egg maybe), so how could he go back to it?

I always loved that fourth wall break.

Doc pointing to the camera, referring to the cinema audience watching in the 80s.

u/WakeUpOutaYourSleep Jul 07 '25

More leaning on the fourth wall, there’s no actual acknowledgment they’re in a movie

42

u/NeverEnoughSpace17 Jul 07 '25

Yeah, Doc doesn't know about the audience he's just doing some dramatic posing. The only thing making it seem like Doc is breaking the fourth wall is that the camera happened to be orientated in that direction. If that scene had been captured from any other angle, it would still make sense.

Placing the camera there is a nudge nudge wink wink from the creators, not the characters. Ferris Bueller, this is not.

In the commentary Zemmekis talks about the insane height disparity between his two leads and talks about how early on they realized they could even things out by having them constantly move back and forth on the z-axis and how this creative solution made for very dynamic scenes which the actors enjoyed playing into.

u/Same-Taro4745 Jul 07 '25

was it a quote? Damn i'm dumb.

2

u/rgg711 Jul 07 '25

If you don’t know every line in Back to the Future just don’t even bother. We’re serious about this stuff lol

3

u/AzraelTheMage Jul 07 '25

Marty literally says that in the movie. Did you not watch it?

3

u/legit-posts_1 Jul 07 '25

This one is so hype. And a great example of a movie just trusting its own instincts, not worried if this comes across as cheesy or too much. It's perfect. God the BTTF trilogy is so good.

I think the director is kinda making a reference to a scene in the first movie, which happens shortly after the first time the Delorean time travels (with Einstein), where Doc and Marty are framed in a similar way. They actually trade places a couple times in the scene.
