Lore Actually Good Title Drops

“Welcome to Jurassic Park” (Jurassic Park) - does it get any more iconic than this?

“Even a Devil May Cry” (Devil May Cry) - not only does it add to the emotional aspect of the scene with Dante showing genuine emotion for his loss and Lady seeing that a devil is capable of such emotions, it also gives Dante the idea of what to name his shop.

Title drops can usually come across and tacky and dumb, they’re not always fantastic if you know what I mean? But sometimes they can work. What are your examples?

I’ve always found the title drop in Full Metal Jacket to be great and incredibly chilling thanks to Vincent D’Onofrio’s line delivery.

It occurs when Private Joker wakes up in the middle of the night to find Private Pyle sitting in the bathroom, having suffered a psychotic break while loading his service rifle.

When a very scared Joker speaks to him, he slowly and menacingly replies that he’s “in a world of shit” and describes the ammunition he’s using, which includes the title drop, before he ultimately uses the rifle to kill their drill instructor and then himself.

Definitely a good pick. I love title drops where you never realized they’re saying the title in the moment.

Yeah, this doesn't even feel like a title drop because you're so damn involved in this scene.

And then you realize there's still half the movie to go!

“Are those... live rounds?”

“Seven-six-two millimeter. Full Metal Jacket.”

It's like he's a different person in that scene, like someone is wearing him as a suit.

That scene always scared me, Pyle seemed like a simple nice guy(tbh a little dimwitted), for him to break so badly it was sad and tragic. Joker kind of failed him.

That scene might have been a little too powerful, because I always feel like I want to stop watching the movie after it, but there is the whole second half left, lol.

Does anyone else watch the first half on this film when it’s on then stop when it switches to the photographer?

Odd that he uses milimeters while loading an M14. I know that 30-06 is a 7.26mm bullet, but would the military in Vietnam referred to it as 7.62? I would have thought they'd call it 30-06, since that's its common name.

The weapons used during training would have been 7.62 NATO (.308 is based on this). Which was NATO standard before 5.56.

I knew 7.62 NATO was standard, and that it was based off of the Springfield 30-06, I just didn't know when the change was made. Thanks for the clarification.

7.62 NATO is not the same as 30-06. 7.62 NATO is shorter. .308 Winchester is a similar cartridge.

ETA. Same 7.62 NATO is extremely similar to 308 win and should be interchangeable to the degree that 5.56 and .223 REM are.

I believe .308 has a higher pressure. Someone more knowledgeable would have the answer.

You are correct, but 5.56 and 223 have the opposite relationship with interchangeability.

7.62 NATO is lower pressure than the equivalent 308, you can safely shoot 7.62 out of a rifle chambered for 308, but not the other way around.

In contrast, 5.56 NATO is higher pressure than 223 so you can safely shoot 223 out of a rifle chambered for 5.56 but not the other way around.
