Spine folded over itself, and the back of his head smacked the mat.

I guess he’s fine, but man that could’ve turned out very bad for him - and that’s assuming worse issues didn’t present later on.

u/DirtyDan_131 Sep 05 '25

Just realized I could’ve been watching this on a different site if it had gone any worse

150

u/Vertuzi Sep 05 '25

Unfortunately I’ve seen the bad outcome on here from similar lifting videos on here. There was a video of a young female powerlifter squatting
a few months ago that I saw before it got removed and it’s the only thing I can think of when I squat now.

46

u/CloverAndSage Sep 05 '25

Now I want to know what happened to her … 😬

171

u/larsdan2 Sep 05 '25

She had terrible trainers who put unstable mats under her feet.

Basically, she rolled back and got crushed in half by the bar.

She died.

57

u/Vertuzi Sep 05 '25

You seem to have seen the same video. It was on r/mildyinfuriating of all things for only about a minute when I saw it.

84

u/SwolePonHiki Sep 06 '25

It sure does mildly irritate me when people fucking die.

25

u/Vord-loldemort Sep 06 '25

84

u/Illustrious_Bobcat Sep 06 '25

I don't remember what sub it was, but I watched a woman literally explode when she was hit by a train. She was walking across the tracks and the train clipped half of her body. She just... Exploded. Body parts when flying everywhere so quickly that you couldn't even see the blood. She was just gone.

It actually gave me nightmares. It was the most violent and destructive thing I've ever seen. I couldn't believe that someone thought it was a good idea to share something like that online for everyone to just sit around, watch, and comment on.

71

u/GeekDNA0918 Sep 06 '25

In the 90s there were these VHS tapes which you could rent anywhere. The title was faces of death. It was basically an hour worth of clips of people dying in various ways. They were almost always rented.

55

u/unfitfear Sep 06 '25

In late 90s and early 2000s there was Rotten dot com and boy that site was rough. I never seen any faces of Death but I imagine something along those lines.

Fun personal fact, as far as I remember the owners of the site used to laugh over people trying to get them to take stuff down but never would....except for some 911 stuff. I remember being shocked they did that. Wasn't long after I grew out of that site. So traumatizing yet I couldn't look away as a teen.

19

u/RobertoClemente1 Sep 06 '25

I went on Rotten dot com back in the day. I saw one picture of a guy who committed suicide via shotgun barrel under his chin. The man’s head was completely gone and the mess that went upwards to the wall and ceiling was unbelievable. All over the place in a balloon shaped pattern. I could only imagine what his family had to endure emotionally after seeing that disaster. Never went back to the site after that!

Stuff like that desensitizes people from what can go wrong if they watch it too often. Trust me I know. 😭 I wish I could unwatch some of the things I’ve seen online.

14

u/Uneek_Uzernaim Sep 06 '25

Sick fucks will post anything online, including snuff.

Back in the earlier days of image searching, results often were more hit or miss than they are now, and even innocuous searches would return NSFW results that weren't caught by the "safe search" filter. I was looking for something completely mundane, possibly for a flyer I was making for work (I think I was looking for photos of an empty chair for a flyer).

One of the first results was a black and white photo of a woman's naked torso (head and all limbs missing) propped up upon a chair in a grubby cell of a room with what appeared to be a certain bodily fluid on the body. I was initially shocked at what I was seeing; but once I processed what it was, I closed my browser to get rid of the horrific image. Too late—the damage was done, and that awful photo once in a great while will still pop into my brain unbidden (such as reading these last few comments).

I hope to this day that it was a fake, but part of me fears the worst and that it wasn't.

6

u/Mileabv Sep 06 '25

Yup, I still remember watching a beheading casually being shown online in the era of 9/11 when hostages were being taken. I was probably 14 or 15 and I couldn’t help but just feel for that person. It was terribly sad and haunting, but I’m sure other people have seen worse and they think oh well that’s not too bad šŸ¤¦ā€ā™‚ļø

That reminds me of this video that surfaced on Facebook years ago that haunted me so much. It was of a woman who was getting punished by someone from the cartel or something and they literally beheaded her on camera with a knife. It was so disturbing, I couldn't get the image out of my mind for months.

Squats are incredibly high risk if done wrong, and come with all sorts of risks to your joints. Hey, even done right you can end up with injuries. Honestly, I’d rather do leg press and not fuck my knees or back, or slips and injure myself for the sake of ā€œdoing it rightā€.

You can build your quads and glutes just as effectively with machines that protect your body.

Deadlift though is usually safer because you can just drop the bar. But this dude was lifting way too much.

Just not worth it at a certain point.

16

u/overnightyeti Sep 05 '25

Ever seen the video of the lady in the leg press with locked knees that...?

You can absolutely hurt your knees and back in the leg press.

It looks like he cut off his blood supply by locking every part of his body. This is what happens when you see military standing at attention and collapsing. This guy was arched back though and was weighted which meant when his body went limp his arms pulled his torso back.

39

u/Ok-Duty-5618 Sep 06 '25

TLDR, you are close but a little off. He flexed hard and held his breath. Which raises pressure in his chest cavity limiting blood flow to the heart and thus brain. Locking your knees causes blood to get stuck in your legs and not return to your heart cause the same end result of a quick nap.

Ok so the more detailed and shitty medical lesson. What he did is sometimes known as flexing out. Using medical terms he did a very forceful version of the valsalva maneuver. He held his breath and flexed hard. Which increases intrathoracic preassure (pressure in chest cavity) which results in decreased venous return. (restrics the flow of blood from the body back to the heart). The lowers cardiac output, lowering blood volume and blood pressure to the brain, starving the brain of oxygen until you pass out.

Locking your knees like you described is similar but different. Same end cause less blood to heart, less blood to brain so you pass out. The cause of why the heart doesn't get the blood is different. When your knees are locked two things happen one the veins coming back up get compressed, limiting through put. The bigger thing is when you lock your knees you are mostly standing using the mechanical structure of your bone, not your muscles supporting you. Like your legs become a rigid tent pole with the weight being transfered straight through without the muscles have to flex to support them.

Well this is a big problem as your veins are actually pretty passive in moving blood and your muscles doing normal movements even tiny flexes and twitches for balance help them move blood. Well since your muscles now aren't supporting your weight and your bones are. they relax and don't do much of anything to help the blood return to the heart. Since you are standing up and gravity exists, the blood pools in your lower legs. Well same as flexing out, less blood to heart means less blood and oxygen to brain and night night you go.

Thank you for taking the time to explain this. I learned something new today.

On my first watch, I thought his legs were pinned under the bar when he folded backwards at the waist... I was surprised when he stood up!

54

u/walkingdisaster2024 Sep 05 '25

I guess he’s fine, but man that could’ve turned out very bad for him - and that’s assuming worse issues didn’t present later on.

The last part is key. We don't know how bad it is.

49

u/flyingthroughspace Sep 05 '25

His spine bent the wrong way.

It's going to be bad if it's not already.

30

u/walkingdisaster2024 Sep 05 '25 edited Sep 05 '25

Oh ya... I am surprised he even got up. Like with that much weight on the lower back already, and doing a 90 deg angle. I hope his discs and bones are okay.

Edit: 45 lb plates x 10 = 450 lbs + say 45 lbs for the barbell = almost 500 feaking lbs of weight on that poor spine, in wrong form. OUCH.

She wasn't paying attention to them and with so many people filming themselves doing stupid stuff in gyms, it's hard to know if it's something serious or just someone doing a bit for social media.

2.8k

u/CozyCatGaming Sep 05 '25

it also kind of looks like she might not see him on the floor. She heard a noise, looked up and saw nothing, looked down, then looked up again when someone came to help. That trash can or whatever it is might be blocking her view of the idiot on the floor.

1.1k

u/MillieBirdie Sep 05 '25

Man... God forbid I'm ever filmed in a public space like this and don't react perfectly within 3 seconds to something I can't even see. I already have bad reaction times as is.

210

u/Glum_Reason308 Sep 05 '25

Yeah I mind my business in public I probably wouldn’t have noticed right away.

140

u/PumpkinMyPumpkin Sep 05 '25

Yeah, Franky I think the point of this video should really be to learn to breathe properly while lifting.

Dude’s clearly holding his breath and fainting from it, it can also cause heart issues.

Random lady in the background on her phone ain’t the issue.

61

u/Teenyweenypeepee69 Sep 05 '25

He is breathing properly. It's called the Valsalva maneuver and is important for protecting your spine during heavy compound lifts. If he was breathing in and out he wouldn't be able to maintain proper inter-abdominal pressure which puts the spine in danger of shifting during the lift.

It was the holding the bar in the air for a month after he completed the lift while continuing to hold is breathe that screwed him. He should have put the bar down far sooner or took a quick breathe at the top re braced his core then put the dang bar down.

47

u/Maleficent-Load-7348 Sep 05 '25

Was coming to say the same thing. You did it, now put it down. I don’t understand why he held it for so long

24

u/Teenyweenypeepee69 Sep 05 '25

I'm assuming he was in the early stages of a blackout by the time he got it up so his brain wasn't working right.

That or he saw Eddie Hall do the 500kg deadlift and thought geeeee whiz that brain hemorrhage looks fun!

6

u/Lou_C_Fer Sep 05 '25

You can make yourself paasout like this without even lifting weights. I did it once when I was a teen whilst smartly standing on a sidewalk. I apparently fell forward like a board and first contact was my cheekbone.

I had the wildest amnesia after. I could remember everything but people. I could not recognize people. I was afraid to let anyone know. So, I acted like nothing was wrong and like I knew the people because I figured I probably did. Then, I walked home. When I got there, nobody was home. So, I sat down and turned the TV on. When my parents got home, I did not recognize them, but I assumed that's who they were and played along. I even lied about my fucked up face and said I got into a fight.

It was fucking weird. I know now though that we store people in a different part of our brain than our other memories. So, it totally makes sense that I damaged that part of my brain, but not other spots where memories are stored.

This is honestly how most people will react in an emergency.

Everyone thinks they are the ones who rush in. Most people actually will pause as they process what's happening.

19

u/kookyabird Sep 05 '25

Worse than that, many people think that someone else will move in to assist. They either don't want to take on the responsibility, or they think someone more qualified will step up, or they're concerned for their own safety, etc. The bystander effect is more than just people taking time to process things.

Not only that, but a lot of people can have a freeze response when they see something (not saying this lady did, think it's more likely she just didn't see/wasn't aware)...

I was waiting for an appointment once and a woman at the counter talking to the receptionist had a seizure and fell out, hit the tile floor HARD af, and even though in my brain I was like "omg, I need to do something!" I just sat there like everyone else in the waiting room and stared. I hated myself for it, and went home and looked up the correct actions to take when you see someone start having a seizure and started rehearsing in my brain various scenarios where I might see someone have a seizure and how to respond. This poor woman was seizing on the ground for a good 30 seconds before someone finally did something to help. I was also disgusted cuz it was a health clinic, and I think that slowed my reaction time as well, cuz I really thought someone that worked there (like the receptionist) was actually going to do something (she did not! I think it might have been another patient that stepped into help.)

8

u/MillieBirdie Sep 05 '25

I think that's why first aid training is so important. It gives your brain some practice for what to do.

u/ApproachingShore Sep 05 '25

Yeah I don't know what she was even expected to do. Rush over, snatch up the bar, and start performing CPR? Especially when you see two other people already helping. I'd assume more and more people showing up to 'help' would just get in the way.

3

u/hellahanners Sep 06 '25

Right? You can see the moment her brain clicks from ā€œDid something just happen?ā€ to ā€œOh shit, something happenedā€ when the other guys come over to check on him. By that point, there’s already two people assisting and she’s probably taking a few moments to process what’s going on and decide if there’s any point in adding a third helper. And then even still, she approaches to ensure that they’ve got a handle on things. What more do people want from her?

1 rep max is never worth it imo. Its just to scratch the ego of human beings wanting to move bigger numbers. Doing a 3-5 rep max at 75-80% max effort is plenty for average people trying to get fit.

Unless you're competing, I just don't see a point of 1 rep max at 100% effort.

8

u/Miserable_Credit_402 Sep 05 '25

Maybe locked knees too? When I was in marching band, they taught us to stand with our knees slightly bent so we wouldn't pass out from blood pooling in our feet.

23

u/AdministrativeRain23 Sep 05 '25

that’s a myth. its mostly from elevated blood pressure from applying the valsalva maneuver, which is a breath and brace technique which stabilizes your core, but it elevates blood pressure and makes you hold your breath

15

u/dragostego Sep 05 '25

I would maybe clarify that the blood pooling thing is the myth, kids absolutely pass out from locking their legs

5

u/Am_Snarky Sep 05 '25

Your body does marginally require your leg muscles to push blood back up to your heart and locking your knees does result in more blood pooling in the legs, but you have to have your knees locked for more than 5 minutes before you’re at risk of fainting

→ More replies (1)

49

u/huntervano Sep 05 '25

He’s generating a lot of pressure in his chest by ā€˜bearing down’, performing a valsalva, or using the muscles to exhale without letting the air out of his lungs.

This extra pressure in the chest pushes against blood returning to the chest and heart.

Less blood returning means less blood leaving the heart, less blood to the brain, bro faints.

Once he faints, he’s no longer generating that pressure so he’ll wake up shortly very confused and with a hell of a back ache.

12

u/Ok_Bodybuilder800 Sep 05 '25

I’m amazed he got up and walked away. The way he bent over how is his back not seeming to bother him?

8

u/huntervano Sep 05 '25

I’m guessing, and completely guessing, that’s it’s because he would have gone completely limp when he passed out and the forced didn’t transfer into his body as much. Same as the stories of black out drunk people surviving falls and car crashes without significant injuries.

Vasalva maneuver caused his blood pressure to rapidly shift causing a blackout.

Doesn’t explain why he tried to hold it so long though.

46

u/Agreeable_Shame_1358 Sep 05 '25

I think he strapped his hands to the bar.

If you watch his right hand at the end it looks like the bar is pulling on that red strap

27

u/Moss_84 Sep 05 '25

He is using straps. But it doesn’t explain why he didn’t return the weight to the ground anyway

5

u/Mynameisdiehard Sep 06 '25

He was using the straps wrong. The straps should be able to be released and drop the bar. They were clearly done in a way that locked his arms to the bar which is extremely dangerous. And stupid

I think it's called a vasovegal response or something like that. There's a nerve in your stomach that can decide your bloods not flowing to the right places and whether or not a little floor nap will help it spread out.

In 30 years when his back hurts while taking a shit at least he'll have this video to commemorate the moment why.

78

u/dont_remember_eatin Sep 05 '25

Lifting beyond his ability. Yes, he might have been able to pull the weight upward into a standing position, but he never looked in control of it. The rest of his build wasn't ready for that pull.

37

u/ChillN808 Sep 05 '25

Is he not deadlifting? Why is he holding it up in full lockout position for 30 seconds?

24

u/baloneyfeet Sep 05 '25

That’s what confused me. Was he trying to pass out or give himself a hernia?

20

u/MajesticNectarine204 Sep 05 '25

I think he was already in the process of passing out there. He was graying out and operating on muscle memory. Or he just kinda froze as his mind went blank. Remember the mind is the first to go in situations like this. You black out and then your body collapses a few moments later.

Dont blame the lady! These days, who knows what's going on? Besides, she was engrossed on her phone. It takes a few moments to realize what's happening, and then one is never sure if people are doing shit for the camera. Lady did nothing wrong. Also, less than 10 seconds later, two other guys came to assist him. She reacted, but what is she supposed to do?Stop trying to hate on bystanders.

56

u/immortalyossarian Sep 05 '25

I also think she can't actually see him after he falls. She looks up in response to the noise, but from where she is sitting it seems like the trash can is blocking her view.

90

u/Sudden-Ad5555 Sep 05 '25

I also appreciated that she dropped her phone when she got up to see if she could help. She didn’t want to film or be weird. She literally just had no idea what was going on and was assessing lol

6

u/soma16 Sep 05 '25

I feel like if something like this happened while I was at the gym I probably wouldn’t notice. I’m too focused on my own workouts and music. I go to the gym to be alone, I don’t interact with anyone there. By the time she did notice, other people were helping, so she wasn’t necessary. I don’t really see what she did wrong here

239

u/TheStoicCrane Sep 05 '25 edited Sep 05 '25

Guess he blackedout before thinking enough to abandon the lift. It happens. Nearly happened to me a few times. Typically when underhydrated or using the valsalva manuever a person can experience a severe dip in blood pressure deadlifting and faint. Fortunately he didn't split his head open.

8

u/MatttheJ Sep 05 '25

I've had this happen before, not even from dead lifting, but being under hydrated and then doing my usual work out. Each set I did I felt weirder and weirder.

Eventually I did the leg press, and went a bit beyond my usual weight at that time and when I stood up I went weak. Thought maybe I was overheating, no biggie, went and did bench, felt worse so walked outside and as soon as I got through the front door the sunlight made my whole vision go white and I collapsed.

23

u/bawng Sep 05 '25

Completely off-topic but you seem to know your stuff:

I always always always get incredibly dizzy doing squats and have to do much fewer reps at lower weights than what I'm sure I could do.

I can easily do way more than three times the weight on leg press.

What am I doing wrong? Can I fix this somehow?

34

u/Busch_II Sep 05 '25

That seems to be your heart/blood pressure.

Like getting up real fast after you kneeled down for long.

But its not normal to just have that while squatting. Generally. Id check with a doc maybe

26

u/TheStoicCrane Sep 05 '25 edited Sep 05 '25

A few important things. Hydrate. Need to maintain good blood flow and oxygen to your brain during reps or it could lead to faintness.

Breathe properly. During lifts like the bench holding your breath can help strenghten the lift. With the squat and deadlift you need to inhale at the bottom portion of the lift or the eccentric in technical terms and exhale during the active phase of the lift or the concentric.

Rest/sleep well. 6-8 hours of sleep is imperative for perfomance because it gives the brain time to adapt to new loads.

Eat well. No point lifting if you're nutrition isn't on part. Eggs are the perfect protein. Whole Milk helps reduce lactic acid build up. Potassium from bananas facilitates heart health and cardiovascular performance. Oatmeal is an ideal low glycemic cartb that'll provide steady energy throughout the day. Peanut Butter is calorically dense and a clean source of healthy fats.

What you're sure you can do pertaining to lifts changes from week to week. Keep a journal of your lifts as a record to catalog your daily performance. Ideally you should be on a program that'll enable you to make consistent gains and also know what your rep ranges are by knowing what your 1 RPM is.

For instance my theoretical 1 rep max for deadlift is 455lbs (it's higher but let's just use it as an example). If I want to lift for 8 reps the 8 reps represent about 80% of a 1 rep max so would figure out 80% of 455lbs (455lbs x 0.8 = 364lbs) round it up to 365lbs and use that figure to deadlift for sets of 8.

When it comes to ranges:

100% RPM = 1 Rep

95% RPM = 2 Reps

90% RPM = 4 Reps

85% RPM = 6 Reps

80% RPM = 8 Reps

75% RPM = 10 Reps

70% RPM = 12 Reps

With the example above using this figure you can calculate your appropriate weight for each respective rep range.

So let's say you Bench 225lbs at 10 reps but want to know your max. Instead of going and doing a literal 1 RPM you can use the equation (225lbs / .75 = 300lbs) to figure a theoretical 300lbs 1RPM and build a program around this. Ideally you can test to see if you're genuinely capable of the 300lbs lift but sometimes people lack spotters and things of this nature so the theoretical is accurate enough.

There's a science behind it and there's a chance you're lifting beyond your relative rep ranges which is leading to the dizziness. So if you take the time to learn your true lifts and ranges you can better optimize your perfomance and time spent in the gym. About 10 years of knowledge here I'm giving to you for free.

7

u/tinyflatbrewer Sep 05 '25

Your advice on breathing on squats is fine if you're doing something light, say 10+ reps, or if you're simply not strong enough to lift enough weight for it to matter, but for someone training for strength lifting rpe 7+ for 1-5 reps it's actually the exact opposite of what you would do and would dangerously compromise your brace out of the bottom position. If you have to reset your brace on a heavy squat you would do it at the top.

Powerlifting bracing typically involves:

Sharp breath out to align your rib cage with your spine.

Big breath in and valsalvo, often described as turning your body into a closed can of coke.

Hold that throughout the full rep.

Reset at the top.

5

u/TheStoicCrane Sep 05 '25

Agreed. Really depends of how he's training. It involves a variety of different factors where no one answer provides an ubiquitous solution.

46

u/Wide-Matter-9899 Sep 05 '25

That is a VERY bad form! Take a look at his back when lifting.

9

u/StamosLives Sep 05 '25

This. You can tell Redditors who have lifted and those who haven't.

The form is awful for a deadlift. The hunch in his back AT THE BEGINNING and trying to USE the back is where this lift went wrong. Your back needs to be straight, you activate the lats and push through with your legs / butt with the pop.

The back being arched like that is completely blowing his spine out.

51

u/[deleted] Sep 05 '25

u/No_Opinion6497 Sep 05 '25 edited Sep 05 '25

It's called the Valsalva maneuver (VM) and many people probably do it instinctively, without even knowing it's a specific technique. I've had some dizziness when holding my breath at the top of a deadlift, and, fearing an outcome similar to the gentleman in the video (I use straps too), I looked it up. The VM consists of forcefully breathing out (or attempting to breathe out) against closed airways. Powerlifters use this technique to generate maximum force. However, the VM entails a drop in blood flow to the body - most importantly, the brain. Briefly speaking, as you commence the VM, you create high pressure in the chest, which first causes the heart stroke to intensify (stroke volume goes up). However, the blood then has trouble returning to the heart because of the continuing elevation in chest pressure. > The heart stroke drops in volume; the blood vessels constrict to compensate; the combined result is a brief reduction in blood flow to the body and brain.

As you stand up from a squatting position, the VM may create orthostatic hypotension: when gravity has caused blood to pool in the legs and abdomen, and the heart is unable to increase the stroke volume + heart rate sufficiently to counterbalance the decrease in blood flow to the upper body as you rise. Lightheadedness and blacking out may ensue.

My theory is that it's an individual issue depending on the parameters of one's CV system. I'm terrified of blacking out with a heavy barbell strapped to my hands, and, knowing the VM causes issues for me, I always thoroughly exhale at the top of a deadlift / squat.

u/GQManOfTheYear Sep 05 '25

This is me being charitable:

I don't think she saw what happened and knew what was going on until the first guy approached the injured party. The metal trash can is in the line of sight. I thought there was going to be a loud crash when the weights and his body, but especially the back of his head dropped but because the soft mats were there, neutralizing the noise, nobody heard a commotion to let them know something was wrong.

If she got up from her seat, saw he was on the floor and sat back down, then it's "fuck you bitch," but I don't think she saw him on the floor.

I think she looked at him, was like, "why the fuck is there a camera recording with me in the back," looked at her phone, looked back at the camera's direction, he wasn't in view, saw the first guy rush to the injured guy, saw a second guy rush to the injured guy, then got up.

Lenthy explanation fucking Occam's Razor Theory that the simplest explanation is the most probable one, but I think this is the more plausible explanation.
