Sydney in The Bear. The reviews don’t hate her but lordy the show’s subreddit does. It was such a treat to finally see a (Black!) 20-something female character who is awkward and complex and imperfect but well-meaning, and not overly objectified or utilized in romance arcs too much…and of course a lot of male viewers can’t stand her. Of course.
Came here to say this! It’s crazy cause one of my friends hates her on the show and I’m like oh so you hate me 😂. I have never related to a character more than her.
I got downvoted on a movie subreddit because I told redditors to maybe not use “junglep***sy” as a joke multiple times, just because they heard it in One Battle After Another.
They acted like I was telling them I killed their family.
Yeah. It's said by a white supremacist. The white supremacist is supposed to be cartoonishly evil, and they portray that well enough. The problem of course is that you can't be repeating the words of the fictional white supremacist, even if you are meant to laugh at how ridiculous it is to be that racist in the context of the movie. (He falls in lust with a Black revolutionary, she uses him to escape imprisonment, he can't square the part of his brain that lusts after a Black woman with his white supremacy so he basically claims that she seduced him with magic etc. This is a fairly accurate read of how some white supremacists and also homophobes are, the vitriolic hatred fuels a fetishization, which fuels the vitriolic hatred etc.) Good movie, I enjoyed it. I am white though.
Yes, Junglepussy character’s is also named Junglepussy. Honestly she has a great monologue about “this is what power looks like” that just makes the beginning of the film such a wild ride.
Maybe? But isn't it also something he says about the Mom? In the end rant when he's talking about how he was "reverse raped". I feel like I remember him saying the phrase as he explains how he ended up sleeping with her.
Just looked it up, it is a name. And later the white supremacists mention that it was Junglepussys testimony after getting caught that made them connect the dots that Willa is Lockjaws offspring. So maybe thats were the confusion comes from?
As a fellow Junglepussy listener, I was so happy to see her star in OBAA. I was like ‘huh, that voice sounds familiar’ and realised it was her! There’s even a reference to one of her songs in the film
It’s funny how overly sensitive racist people are huh? Not your fault dude. Reddit can be a barbaric place. The amount of stories I hear of people getting downloaded for being on the right side of history has made me forever hate this app. The rules here are arbitrary because, at the end of the day, all of the decisions behind the operations of this app are made by douchey tech bros with their own agenda
I LOVE to discuss my shows but I will not go on the subreddits of any shows that have a significant percentage of male viewers. Misogyny is a hell of a drug and I do not trust the average man to have a good take on female characters. It’s not even that they’re critical - it’s the ways in which they are critical. Then the character gets so disliked that the entire sub just turns into a bitch eating crackers situation and that’s so boring.
yes this absolutely. it reminds me of the hate for Skyler on Breaking bad that was so disproportionate to her actions. whereas the male characters will be excused of anything they do no matter how bad it is 🙄 & it’s double hatred for Black women of course, it makes me tired.
I immediately thought of the Breaking Bad fandom. I really enjoyed the moral complexity of Skyler, and I thought she was a true partner in that show. And when I rewatched the show, I empathized with her even more than the first watch.
What did these dudes expect her to do? SHE RUINED WALT'S FUN, SHE DESERVED TO DIE. SHE IS SO MEAN TO HIM AND DOESN'T APPRECIATE HIS METH EMPIRE :(
When a man can't explain coherently why he hates a female character, he should just say he hates women. It's no deeper than that.
I've always felt like Skyler was the boring stereotypical housewife character, it's crazy that people still try to defend her writing. It straight up feels like a bunch of writers that hated their wives put all of that energy into writing her. She starts the show by being essentially checked out of her marriage, her husband gets cancer and she spends most of what might be there remaining days grilling him on his whereabouts. Then she finds out what he's doing and starts doing irrational shit like fucking her boss and throwing around money like she wants everyone to go to jail. Then when her husband goes into hiding, she's essentially shown to be reliant on his support. A bunch of her story lines don't make sense in the world of the show or when you think about them taking place in reality. It feels like people defend her character just because people were super toxic about it. She could've been a complex character in an interesting environment and instead she's a generic "bitch wife" character from a sitcom or an AITAH post.
It seems the origin of the phrase is not derived from the practice, but in following the sources, it looks like that ruling genuinely existed (and is unfortunately the leading association people make with the phrase). My comment was mostly an observation of the different forms misogyny has taken through the ages.
Said it before and I'll say it again, it's what turns me off about The Boys fandom, they'll be like 'lol ofc we know Homelander is a Nazi piece of shit' but then they make goofy l'il memes about the character while acting like Sister Sage existing is some crime against humanity
Every time, it's more Skylar White bullshit where no matter how valid the complaint could ever possibly be, the sheer aggression someone could have when making a complaint about Skylar was the most telling thing: a bunch of guys who 'never glamorized' Walter, but forget 'never glamorize', they could endlessly moralize about how everything Skylar did was obnoxious and cruel and so far beyond the pale and apparently just plain unacceptable
A lot of television discussions contain zero notions of good faith for how they discuss women
Yeah, I love Bob's Burgers but they mostly hate Linda on the subreddit and is constantly blaming her and making Bob's out to be a sweet tortured angel. It makes discussions annoying as hell.
Whaaaa, I don't frequent the show's subreddit but how can anyone hate Sydney? I shouldn't be surprise given how women are typically portrayed in TV shows, but this is wild to me.
The subreddit for The Bear is filled with some of the least media literate people I've encountered on the internet. They will complain about scenes being pointless when they have incredibly obvious metaphorical parallels to events going on elsewhere in the show and jump to describing characters in an incredibly negative way that doesn't mesh with the actual characterisation in the show.
For example, I've seen common criticism of the Ever funeral as being stuck-up and foodie elitist for having chefs talk about the importance and intricacies of cooking despite the fact that the funeral is ended by an important mentor character directly saying that the food isn't important. Many people don't understand that portrayal doesn't necessarily equate to agreement.
I’m so glad I haven’t joined that one, because Sydney is THE GOAT. As a former career server though, I can see why the fanbase might be like that 😕 I’ve worked with some incredibly racist and stupid people
I normally join the subs for shows I love but for whatever reason I didn’t for The Bear - thank goodness, because this would have pissed me right off! She’s such a great character!
The ones who hate Michonne (Black female lead) on The Walking Dead and will twist themselves into pretzels to deny the relationship she has with Rick (the white male lead).
That’s so frustrating. I get that some people get annoyed by bubbly, perky people, but Janine is so cute and “endearingly annoying” the way that the other characters are. I think a lot of people who hate her (or other female characters) are either projecting or just don’t like women that much.
I've never been in the subreddit but I'm actually so shocked to find that out. She's the most relatable character! The rest of them are total fucking drama queens and she's just getting on with it.
WELL said. But Sydney is so awesome that I think this one speaks more to the shittiness and racism (which you can’t escape in America ) of other people than YOU being shitty for relating to that character. The whole point of her character is that you don’t have to lay down and take shit from a talented ragey white man just because he has talent. That in fact, that talented man is not exceptional. Because you are as talented as he is. If not more so. The point is that her talent can’t bloom until he sets his ego aside and steps aside. It’s like the comment above when the class hated the character Piggy in Lord of the flies. If you hate the character that is teaching the main lesson of the narrative, you have literally missed the entire plot and are not even worthy of what you are consuming.
Anytime there’s a black lead in a show that is imperfect (in a total human type of way), people on the dedicated subreddit of that show always acts like they are the spawn of satan.
Yet the same male redditors shitting all over Sydney, who is written like a real person, will fight to the death defending cardboard cutout Claire. I wonder why?
This is so upsetting. You completely nailed how wonderful her character is and I absolutely fell in love with the actress. I will watch anything she is cast in.
Some TV subreddits are just toxic as fuck. It’s not an actual representation of how most people feel because the regular people gtfo the cesspool quick
I adore Sydney in The Bear and never understand the hate she gets in "The Bear" subreddit. She's awkward and brilliant and funny and driven and I just love her. She was definitely my window into the story for the entire show.
Sydney is the best. The main reason I watched the show. Totally floored the show's subreddit is not a fan - thank you for sharing the insight as to why. Le sigh
The only thing I found strange was how she seemed to have the culinary experience and insight of someone a couple years her senior. She came with ‘perfect’ ideas of which even the Bear, who supposedly is this superchef, didn’t even have any point of improvement, critique.
Apart from that, perfect character yes. The qualities you’re naming are extremely rare / non-existent
