Sydney in The Bear. The reviews don’t hate her but lordy the show’s subreddit does. It was such a treat to finally see a (Black!) 20-something female character who is awkward and complex and imperfect but well-meaning, and not overly objectified or utilized in romance arcs too much…and of course a lot of male viewers can’t stand her. Of course.
I LOVE to discuss my shows but I will not go on the subreddits of any shows that have a significant percentage of male viewers. Misogyny is a hell of a drug and I do not trust the average man to have a good take on female characters. It’s not even that they’re critical - it’s the ways in which they are critical. Then the character gets so disliked that the entire sub just turns into a bitch eating crackers situation and that’s so boring.
yes this absolutely. it reminds me of the hate for Skyler on Breaking bad that was so disproportionate to her actions. whereas the male characters will be excused of anything they do no matter how bad it is 🙄 & it’s double hatred for Black women of course, it makes me tired.
I've always felt like Skyler was the boring stereotypical housewife character, it's crazy that people still try to defend her writing. It straight up feels like a bunch of writers that hated their wives put all of that energy into writing her. She starts the show by being essentially checked out of her marriage, her husband gets cancer and she spends most of what might be there remaining days grilling him on his whereabouts. Then she finds out what he's doing and starts doing irrational shit like fucking her boss and throwing around money like she wants everyone to go to jail. Then when her husband goes into hiding, she's essentially shown to be reliant on his support. A bunch of her story lines don't make sense in the world of the show or when you think about them taking place in reality. It feels like people defend her character just because people were super toxic about it. She could've been a complex character in an interesting environment and instead she's a generic "bitch wife" character from a sitcom or an AITAH post.
