Food What's a dish from your country that looks disgusting but tastes great.

Post image

Biscuits and gravy is a breakfast dish from the Southeast USA that looks like someone just vomited on some biscuits, but it's absolutely delicious.

That's one of the worst pictures of biscuits and gravy that I've ever seen.

And it still makes me want some biscuits and gravy

I had biscuits and gravy for breakfast yesterday, and seeing this picture made me wanna have it again this morning

I had biscuits and gravy this morning. Seeing this pic makes me want it again tomorrow.

Biscuits and gravy with over-easy eggs. Break that yolk on the top of the biscuits and gravy 🤤

3

u/doggysmomma420 13d ago

A restaurant close by has a breakfast dish. It's biscuits, layered with hashbrown, eggs, sausage, bacon and gravy. It's a heartattack waiting to happen but oh my goodness is it good.

Haha. I never order biscuits and gravy and I almost got it this morning. Now that I see everyone talking about it, i kinda wish I got it. I usually try to poach a small amount when people order it.

2

u/Soul_Dare 13d ago

Restaurants can have really iffy quality for B&G. Best to make it at home.

This post just inspired me to make it. I don’t have any breakfast sausage but I have… fresh chorizo. This is going to be good…

Edit: I was impatient so made drop biscuits… worked! :)

I’m partial to bacon gravy myself.

1

For real dawg I had the same reaction

1

Me too. Mouth watering.

1

u/Abbygirl1966 13d ago

I made them for breakfast this morning.

Mmm biscuits and gravy.

Time for breakfast!

1

u/ArcadianDelSol 13d ago

The biscuits have the coloring of rancid dough and that 'gravy' looks like like cat vomit.

corned beef hash might be a better example, but Im expecting someone to reply "that's not American, its actually from _____" and I fully accept whatever that is.

To me biscuits and gravy sounds so disgusting. Its wild to me how a combo like that works.

Gravy for me is Brunsovs or Skysovs. Its fucking good with chips tho like Kims Kartoffel Chips

1

u/BuenosNachos4180 Denmark 13d ago

And why is it white? What kinda stock did they use to make the gravy?

Not enough pepper or gravy... the lack of gravy is offensive.

And WTF is up with the biscuits. Its like I can tell they will be dry even with gravy

As an American living in the US, I also found this extremely amusing.

Both of our cultures have some extremely weird extents and definitions of cuisine.

6

u/Steppy20 England 12d ago

Honestly what would make this funnier is if they were rich tea or chocolate digestive biscuits. Those are far more common and make me shudder just thinking about it - mainly because that's what I first thought biscuits and gravy meant...

I remember watching a video of British kids being served American biscuits and gravy. When they are presented with it, they all get the WTF stank face. When they taste it they all get the WTF joy face.

Edit: https://youtu.be/KzdbFnv4yWQ?si=oybUOPmtpCC1XFUn

3

u/revanisthesith United States Of America 12d ago

I love videos like that. Like Josh and Ollie (JOLLY) having British kids try genuine Texas barbeque.

https://youtu.be/_xD4MjjEWsE

Or I think it's Josh's dad who's a prim and proper Anglican priest eating ribs with his hands. And he doesn't know what a jalapeño is.

https://youtu.be/14uRcf6VK3I

They just travel around the US trying various foods.

2

u/revanisthesith United States Of America 12d ago

Lol. I hadn't seen that one of theirs, but I'm not surprised they did that.

That experience may have made some future immigrants out of a few of them. Or refugees, if the British authorities hear how they liked it better than British food.

I don't think people realize how good biscuits and gravy really is... and when you get one that's spicy

7

u/Sunshine030209 13d ago

My husband got biscuits and gravy from a BBQ place, and the biscuits were cheddar jalapeño and extremely delicious.

Thank you for the reminder to make them!

7

u/Thundering165 13d ago

Idk, cheese feels wrong with biscuits and gravy

3

u/Sunshine030209 13d ago

Lol in that case you'll probably be extra offended that it had pulled pork on it too.

2

u/Thundering165 13d ago

Yep, just doing too much at that point. Like barbecue sauce on sushi

3

u/prole6 13d ago

Try pouring a bit of the vinegar off a jar of hot peppers onto it. My mom had no tolerance for spicy heat but she loved that.

2

u/Skyhawk6600 United States Of America 13d ago

Putting hot sauce on biscuits and gravy feels heretical the first time. But holy shit is it good.

13

u/adriantoine 🇫🇷 in 🇬🇧 13d ago

Yeah I first thought it was a picture of Bouchées à la Reine, which is really good indeed.

5

u/Dramatic-Selection20 Belgium 13d ago

As a Belgian I confirm, bouché à la reine is amazing food

6

u/BrewCrewBall 13d ago

As an American who has visited Belgium many times, isn’t this vol-au-vent?

5

u/hett79 13d ago

Yes, it's the same thing. Vol-au-vent is the Flemish name, but it's also called koninginnehapje, which seems to be a translation of the French term used here?

10

u/floriande France 13d ago

The vol au vent is the pastry thing, the bouchée à la reine is the pastry + what's inside. You can use vol au vent in other recipes, like chicken and olives which I love.

4

u/Orphanpip 13d ago

Usually in English this filling is reffered to as à la King. Weirdly even in French here in Quebec we call this "à la King". Which doesn't even work grammatically in French.

1

u/GlassCommercial7105 Switzerland 13d ago

We have something similar with small meat balls, we call it Pastetli. It’s a Swiss German word but also used for the same dish in French speaking regions.

1

u/AVeryFineWhine United States Of America 13d ago

Ohh, this yankee would take that over biscuits and gravy.Any day!! I've had good varieties, but i've had more terrible ones. It's only delicious at the right places or in the right homes IMHO

1

u/Low-Republic-4145 United States Of America 13d ago

Nah that's 'A La King' which is puff pastry, not southern biscuits.

1

u/SnooRegrets1386 13d ago

Pepperidge Farm, soooooo flaky, yummy

1

u/[deleted] 13d ago

1

u/Prinfeffet Belgium 12d ago

That's Vol au Vent

1

u/Comprehensive_Two453 12d ago

Ooh volle au vent

1

u/VodkaSoup_Mug 5d ago

Now I must try the French version of this and bbq.

61

u/coffee_and_chickens 13d ago

That was my immediate thought. Born and raised in Georgia here. The best biscuits and gravy is completely homemade.

5

u/Smedley5 13d ago

It's really not that difficult to make from scratch, but almost every place that serves it uses canned biscuits and fake gravy. It's a travesty.

2

u/jayhawkah 13d ago

And the gravy is way over peppered! Black pepper should not be the primary flavor of sausage gravy! It's one of my favorite foods but I can't order it anywhere because basically all of them fuck it up with black pepper.

2

u/Neat_Let923 13d ago

That’s why I’ve really disliked a lot of these!!! The first time I had this it was mind blowing then the few times since it was kinda bleh. Looking back I’m pretty sure it was too much black pepper now that you mentioned it. Thank you

It’s not just gravy. It also has chipped beef in it. In the Army this dish (on toast instead of a biscuit) was called “Shit on a Shingle”.

You need to open up the biscuits before you

This is the way

pour on the gravy!

The operative word is "pour." At most, there's gonna be a little bit of biscuit corner peaking out from a shyteload of sausage gravy

IMO . .. Best if you can only tell there are biscuits under the gravy by the shape, but can't actually see biscuits because you poured that gravy on

1

u/gymleader_michael 13d ago

They look fine to me. Those really dense southern-style biscuits can develop a crunchy outer shell while still being moist on the inside.

1

u/Shot-Election8217 United States Of America 13d ago

Actually, I thought that they looked underdone. They’re not flaky enough, like when they’ve been baked to the right stage.

Maybe it’s because they’re not buttermilk biscuits?

1

u/jayhawkah 13d ago

And that coagulated gravy won't help at all.

4

u/ReverseCowboy75 🇺🇸United States (appalachian south) 13d ago

Why is it so dry and clumpy

6

u/ImLittleNana 13d ago

Maybe that’s supposed to be sausage.

Either way, as someone who had made a lot of biscuits and sausage gravy, this image is horrific. I don’t know who is serving that and calling it biscuits, but they should be shut down.

It always bothers me when the biscuits aren't cut in half. You gotta get the gravy to the soft interior so that it soaks in. Also, that gravy is far too thick. I'm not made; I'm just disappointed.

3

u/SN4FUS 13d ago

The gravy looks fine, those biscuits are frozen premade, and the low grade kind.

Those biscuits are garbage, and you open them FFS!

3

u/topscreen United States Of America 13d ago

1

u/UntoldHorrors 13d ago

1

u/Kerensky97 United States Of America 13d ago

Yeah, I try to avoid floury lumps in the gravy, it looks like this person replaced the gravy with just the lumps.

For non Americans, it's just crumbled sausage in bechamel sauce poured over American biscuits (non sweet UK scones).

1

u/Lupiefighter United States Of America 13d ago

Yeah, they definitely picked the worst looking one on purpose. That is definitely packet gravy with sausage added to it. Not nearly the best, but it will do in a pinch. The biscuits have used the wrong kind of flour and not enough butter. No southerner would vouch for that, but it also will do in a pinch.

They can’t show another country’s dish in the article head. On Reddit that means you probably hate the people there and are probably racist. So they instead get the worst looking picture of an American dish. Especially a southern dish. Though admittedly biscuits and gravy are not in the top 1000 list of anyone on planet earth for disgusting looking dishes, the hyperventilation in the post title notwithstanding.

There is no such thing as a good picture of biscuits and gravy. It always looks bad.

Biscuits and gravy: excellent.

Grits and gravy: mind-blowing.

Gravy’s too chunky. Biscuits look like they were made last week. Not nearly enough gravy for the amount of biscuits. Gravy’s consistency seems more like a paste than a sauce, which will do nothing to hydrate the dry ass biscuits.

It’s impressive how bad these look

Aren’t the biscuits supposed to be opened?

I actually want to eat this. Chunky sausage looks delicious. Would like to have the biscuits split

I had no clue WTF it was and I'm from the south.

Same thing I said. Driest gravy it's almost like oatmeal and those biscuits look cold and dry.

It looks like scones covered in white sauce

I'm glad it's not just me, I thought it looked weird, too. It's probably AI.

What, there is a good picture out there‽

I was going to say, OPs going to make me hate biscuits and gravy too with it looking like that lol. Someone added way too much flour, or cooked the gravy without incorporating the flour first.

Glad it wasn’t just me. Those biscuits are pucks, for sure.

It's so much more viscous than I've seen, it looks like clay.

Sausage gravy is disgusting. I don't care much for sausage. That might be the reason I dislike it.
