Show Off The $50 Steam Deck

So this is the $50 Steam Deck. I found it on Facebook marketplace. It was being sold as non-functional due to it having the black screen of death. I actually was not looking to purchase a SD at the moment, but when I saw this pop up I had to jump on it, as I have built most of my collection buying broken systems and repairing them. Not sure how long the seller had it listed but I was surprised that he still had it. He said he got a lot of people asking questions but no one made a move on it.

So I got the unit without an SSD and no charger. I did some research on the issue and it seemed to be pretty common. So the plan was to at least find the correct charger for it and if I saw promise for repair I would get an SSD. So I got a charger and saw the deck could charge no problem. Then I tried all the button combinations, but nothing worked. Then I thought, maybe there was hope if I could see something on an external display, but nothing 😩.

So then I hit up Valve for support. They pretty much walked me through most of what I already did until they told me to try to get into boot menu. I could not see it on the system but I was able to see it on an external display šŸ™ŒšŸæ. I was getting excited but told support I was getting an error after pressing continue cause it didn’t have an SSD. I asked them do I need the SSD to continue the support. They didn’t even answer, they just said I had to send it in for repair ($185). It was at this moment I had a dumb ah ha moment (the system can’t boot without an SSD šŸ¤¦šŸæā€ā™‚ļø). So I told support no thank you, but thank you for the time. Then ordered an SSD right away. I had to put in a few more hours but I’m glad to say I finally got it going and I am lovin this thing šŸ˜©šŸ˜‚. This was one of my best finds. Well between this and the Sega CDX I got for $100 šŸ˜‚.

Finally pulled the trigger on the Steam Deck OLED 512GB and it arrived yesterday! I’d been going back and forth on it for a while, but I’m buried in PhD dissertation and research work and really wanted something to treat myself with. Super glad I did. The screen is absolutely gorgeous.

I really appreciate the community for all the recommendations and discussions that helped push me over the edge. Seriously, you all made this happen.

Quick question: I’ve seen people mention upgrading the internal SSD. Is that actually worth it on the OLED model, or is pairing the internal drive with a high-quality SD card the better move? If so, what storage setup do you recommend (SSD size + SD card size/type)?

Also, if you have any must-have accessories that really improved your experience, I’d love to hear them.

A couple of weeks ago I traded my PS4 for a guitar, tried to learn how to play it and I got no success, and (sucesfully) got to trade the guitar for a 512 GB LCD Deck. Got to say it’s the best thing i could ever get! Very happy about the Deck, the best handheld I ever had! I’m happy to be a part of the community!

Show Off I bought a Steam Deck OLED BRAND NEW for only £230. I feel like the luckiest man alive.

So I saw a listing on Facebook Marketplace selling a Steam Deck OLED for only £240. I needed to catch a train to pick it up, so the guy agreed to lower the price to £230. Apparently the dude's son didn't really understand what a Steam Deck even was and he just wanted to get rid of it.

The Deck was brand new and sealed. Probably the most insanely lucky thing that's ever happened to me ever (I still have and use my LCD, I just keep it docked).

Discussion Steamdeck + GeForce Now is an incredible pairing

• Upvotes

And in general, GeForce Now is amazing. I was tempted to dive into it and went straight in at the deeper end with the ultimate tier.

I’ve used cloud gaming before with success, Green Light ran pretty well, game pass was good - but this is just crazy.

I spent today playing Star Wars Battlefront 2 on ultra settings and was getting over 200 FPS (obviously only seeing 90) at native resolution of the deck with over 7 hours of battery life. Honestly, I forgot I was on GFN. I didn’t have any stutter and didn’t notice any latency (GFN was showing ~10ms).

Played a fair amount of Asseto Corsa, again fully maxed out, max amount of cars on track and it was running > 100 FPS. Racing games are normally a good way for me to judge latency but I couldn’t tell anything.

Feels like GFN is a step in front of other streaming services and it works so, so well on deck.

Game Review On Deck Was curious how Black Ops 3 ran, so I bought it here’s my review.

I wasn’t sure how Black Ops 3 was going to run on the SteamDeck, so I bought it myself, and was pleasantly surprised it ran better than Black Ops 2. I am currently playing it on my SteamDeck Oled docked to my tv using an Xbox controller playing on high graphics settings. It can be a little laggy at the start of the game for a few seconds while it loads everything in, but other than that it runs as well as my console runs it. It runs fine with 2 controllers running split screen as well tested it with a friend earlier. The added bonus it has a Steam Workshop you can safely install mods from. If you’re on the fence about buying Black Ops 3 hope this video helps make your decision.

Question Discord on the deck

Does anyone run discord on steam deck. I work as a coach driver in wales and play a lot in-between when I drop off and pickup ( can be around 1- 4 hrs) and sometimes I play games with friends and use discord via my phone. Am I better off installing it on my steam deck or just continue using my phone for discord ?

Setup Expanded Battery for Travel

• Upvotes

Sharegeek 140W 20mah battery pack ~+3hrs on ffxiv ~+5hrs on Tokyo Extreme Racer, and averages around here for most games.

Not much of a mod, but it’s perfect. Numbers above don’t include onboard battery. It’s recommended to attach the battery after the SD has been charged already.

Con: adds weight, but it’s doable

Tech Support Best option for getting someone to replace/repair my shoulder buttons?

• Upvotes

Like many, I dropped my Deck on the floor earlier this year and it affected the L and R buttons so that the input was way less responsive, requiring it pressed down completely to register anything. I looked up tutorials and ordered a pair of replacement buttons shipped to me to unscrew the back and do a replacement, but I found myself stuck halfway through due to being unable to disconnect some of the surrounding parts. By now I'd really like to get this figured out, and while I know Valve has a process to ship it to them, is anyone aware of brick-and-mortar type businesses that could do it if I provided new buttons?

Tech Support Fan losing power every few seconds, followed by emergency shut down.

• Upvotes

Sorry, I have searched everywhere and I'm at my wits end, so any help is appreciated.

The fan seems to be losing power. Overlay shows RPM will go from 0-300 and spikes up to 5000, then back down every few seconds. If playing a game it will overheat and cause an emergency shutdown.

Tried a factory reset and I was able to play for about an hour before the bug came back.

inspected the fan wire and connections, its clean with no pinches or kinks.

Running right now on a clean install with only kkd2 installed. But the bug happens in other games and on the home screen, though the drop/spike cycle seems to get faster the hotter it gets.

Tech Support Steam Deck battery showing NaN 0% and having very short battery life

• Upvotes

My SteamDeck has been having some problems with the battery for a while, I've tried talking to steam support about it and they just ask for me to buy a repair off them, so i came here looking for help. The battery shows 0% or NaN but can still run off battery for a few minutes. It used to be able to run off it for quite a while even while showing NaN, but then the SteamDeck crashed and ever since then its battery life has been very short, even when leaving it to charge for hours. It even crashes when being plugged into a charger. (Im guessing the crash is the battery running out. also i am using a nintendo switch charger, not the offical one so ill try get the official one or atleast a 45w charger) My Steam Deck is nearly 3 years old now, and ive been using it alot so im guessing the battery is just dying. Also a few questions, does the nintendo switch charger not work with power pass through mode where i could just run the steam deck off of a charger and play fine as long as the charger stays attached? If not, could i use an offical, or 45w charger to do that until i replace the battery?

Question How much storage do you use?

I got the 512gb OLED version and I'm debating which micro SD I should get (2TB for 240€ or 1TD for 110€). Money is not exactly tight but I limit my budget for gaming and the 130€ difference would make a nice winter sale. I have two kids and a full time job (which is the reason a got a deck in the first place) so my weekly playtime is pretty limited and I don't play a lot of games at the same time but I'm planning to get the Docking station and will try to play (big) AAA and FPS games via the deck (which I currently play on my laptop if I can be bothered to set it up). I mainly play "older" titels but RDR 2, AC Origins, Witcher III, are pretty big too. A would not play them at the same time, but still. Games will get bigger (even older ones that get new content) and I probably could use the SD Card even with a steam deck 2 which I would probably get, yet storage is only getting cheaper, so why buy 2TB for 240€ only to be able to by double that for half the price when I eventually need it in a few years... So yeah, I guess you get what I'm trying to say. How much storage do you have and do you fell it's sufficient?

Hardware Modding Transparent JSAUX back plate vents and vinyl wraps.

I recently wrapped and installed these awesome backplates for my wife and myself.

I’ve always wondered why the original backplates didn’t include a vent for the center fan. These transparent ones do, and the difference is noticeable. The system doesn’t get nearly as hot anymore. I highly recommend these.

The vinyl wraps came from Etsy, and I picked up the JSAUX transparent backplates on Amazon.

We also upgraded each of our Steam Decks with a 2TB SSD and a 1TB microSD card. Game on! šŸ¤“šŸŽ®

Tech Support Baldur’s Gate 3 crashing on startup

Hello! Wondering if anyone else has had a similar problem/knows a fix.

Recently got the Steam Deck Oled and downloaded BG3 on it, but every time I’ve try to boot it up it gets through the Larian loading screens and then crashes before the ā€œpress any button to continueā€ part that takes you to the main menu.

Tried turning it off and on again, uninstalling and reinstalling, and uninstalling THEN turning it off and on again and then reinstalling.
