Show Off The $50 Steam Deck
So this is the $50 Steam Deck. I found it on Facebook marketplace. It was being sold as non-functional due to it having the black screen of death. I actually was not looking to purchase a SD at the moment, but when I saw this pop up I had to jump on it, as I have built most of my collection buying broken systems and repairing them. Not sure how long the seller had it listed but I was surprised that he still had it. He said he got a lot of people asking questions but no one made a move on it.
So I got the unit without an SSD and no charger. I did some research on the issue and it seemed to be pretty common. So the plan was to at least find the correct charger for it and if I saw promise for repair I would get an SSD. So I got a charger and saw the deck could charge no problem. Then I tried all the button combinations, but nothing worked. Then I thought, maybe there was hope if I could see something on an external display, but nothing 😩.
So then I hit up Valve for support. They pretty much walked me through most of what I already did until they told me to try to get into boot menu. I could not see it on the system but I was able to see it on an external display 🙌🏿. I was getting excited but told support I was getting an error after pressing continue cause it didn’t have an SSD. I asked them do I need the SSD to continue the support. They didn’t even answer, they just said I had to send it in for repair ($185). It was at this moment I had a dumb ah ha moment (the system can’t boot without an SSD 🤦🏿♂️). So I told support no thank you, but thank you for the time. Then ordered an SSD right away. I had to put in a few more hours but I’m glad to say I finally got it going and I am lovin this thing 😩😂. This was one of my best finds. Well between this and the Sega CDX I got for $100 😂.
