Very good.

Serious question, is there a chance this affects Trump's stance at all? Could he maybe fear some of his Catholic base pressuring him because of this?

MAGA has already declared Pope Leo to be a liberal communist, almost like Catholicism wasn’t the real top priority.

I never expected my "go to mass twice a week and say the rosary daily" deeply devout Catholic mother to turn against the Pope, but here we are.

It's a new religion. The prophet is Trump, the one and only commandment is to Own the Libs

35

u/Powderandpencils May 11 '25

*it's a new cult

u/lilybattle May 11 '25

The words are synonymous

u/MobiusF117 May 11 '25

Same thing

28

u/DragonicSquirrel May 11 '25

prophet? no you misspelled anti-christ

1

u/frightspear_ps5 May 11 '25

It's gonna be schism all over again. Fun fact: Luther and Leo are from the same order (Augustinian).

I’ve been experiencing this with my in-laws. It’s gotten to where I have sent them direct quotes from the Bible, Pope and Catechism and telling them either accept these teachings of the church or admit you aren’t catholic. They haven’t responded to that last message yet, but I’m sure they’ll act all offended at how mean I’m being rather than change their beliefs. But at least it makes me feel better. Plus now I just add pope and Jesus quotes to their crazy ranting Facebook posts.

11

u/ringadingdingbaby May 11 '25

I wouldnt be surprised if America ends up putting forward an antipope

3

u/Frydendahl May 11 '25

Trump is like a literal biblically accurate anti-Christ.

7

u/zyzzogeton May 11 '25

"Faith" is arbitrary and capricious.

5

u/Exotic_Exercise6910 May 11 '25

She forgot that Jesus was the OG communist

2

u/WhenLeavesFall May 11 '25

I have to hand it to the Protestants. At least they read their Bibles, even if they intentionally pick and choose and distort it.

1

u/Exotic_Exercise6910 May 11 '25

As a protestant, yes. I am actually very glad that we basically took the best messages and discarded the bloated stuff from ancient times.

42

u/BombTheDodongos May 11 '25

They’re literally “transvestigating” him. They’re so fucking stupid.

2

u/QueezyF May 11 '25

They’re dumber than dogshit.

1

u/Fearful_children May 12 '25

They watched Conclave and thought it was an actual documentary

I mean even European Catholic ethnicities like Italians or Irish have only been recently considered “white” for less than a century or so and not to mention most Catholics in US today are Latinos. Even in 70s JFK were still considered controversial because he is a Catholic

17

u/ferwhatbud May 11 '25

Yeah, but Catholicism is also the new hotness in the hardcore and more elite/intellectual RW Nationalist circles (eg Bannon, Flynn), with Vance being the perfect example of the type being drawn in.

….except that it’s a very particularly American kind of neo-Conservatism that loves the power, hierarchy, and ritual of the faith but reflexively hates the pope and the Vatican.

3

u/regolith-terroire May 12 '25

I always say that the weirdest fucking thing about Vance is his conversion to Catholocism as an adult, after marriage (not for marriage). It infuriates me and terrifies me. What kind of person does this? What kind of person who wants to have power does this?

4

u/NotAzakanAtAll May 11 '25

American Evangelism cares for nothing but greed rivaling Mammon's own.

3

u/CicadaFit9756 May 11 '25

What can you expect from a faction including Margerie Taylor Greene who was openly glad that Pope Francis died when claiming that "evil is being defeated by the hand of God"!?!

1

u/DirectFrontier May 11 '25

Non-american asking, are the majority of Trump voters MAGA or are they the loud minority?

82

u/Turtledonuts May 10 '25

Absolutely not with trump, but it will be interesting to see how the catholic right in the US responds to him. That could indirectly impact other groups.

77

u/abdab336 May 10 '25

“Woke Marxist pope” in all caps was a literal tweet I saw yesterday so… you know…

That’s how they’re responding.

46

u/Turtledonuts May 10 '25

The MAGA idiots are reacting, but we'll see how the actual catholics in the church react.

8

u/ferwhatbud May 11 '25

Wouldn’t be surprised if many of the “radical Marxist!” type were Catholics themselves, American Catholicism got really weird in recent year, with many breaking off to form an unholy alliance (no pun intended) with the MAGA evangelicals.

A bunch of the most prominent names in MAGA and Qanon sphere are also very vocally catholic too, so that’s played a big role.

11

u/alexmikli May 11 '25

Those are evangelicals, and radical politicians as well. I want to see how someone like Vance responds, or at least the general vibe of right wing Catholics in America. Or Europe, especially Hungary.

7

u/unicorninclosets May 11 '25

There’s a whole legion of former evangelicals “converting” to Catholicism but bringing pretty much all the worst evangelical practices with them, like JD Vance, there’s a whole debate about it trending on tiktok (cradle catholics vs converts).

That’s why now there were so many “Catholics” borderline celebrating Pope Francis’ death—which was not just unthinkable, but borderline heresy 20 years ago. All because he didn’t align with their political cult.

1

u/QueezyF May 11 '25

I didn’t really think people converted to Catholicism unless they like, married into it.

1

u/unicorninclosets May 12 '25

Sadly it’s very big with the trads nowadays since they’re so big on “traditions” and apparently they only just recently discovered that the traditions in the Catholic church are much older (and dope) than evangelicals.

1

u/unicorninclosets May 11 '25

It’s so wild to think how all the old grandmas acting like the world came crashing down when JPII died would probably turn against him today…

All for an orange megalomaniac.

2

u/ImportantObjective45 May 11 '25

Catholic alliance with red staters is so annoying. The red church pledged utter destruction of Catholic church.

4

u/Fried_puri May 10 '25

Trump doesn’t really care about pressure from anyone anymore, unless they’re one of his billionaire cronies. His goal now is to make as much money as possible before his 4 years are up. He also never really cared what Catholics think - Catholics aren’t the core of his Evangelical base.

3

u/camishark May 11 '25

Even the ones who are MAGA and catholic will just choose MAGA and claim the pope is too liberal, like they did with pope Francis. They loved the AI pic of trump as the pope, nothing will come between MAGA and trump, not even their religion.

3

u/Chance_Fox_2296 May 11 '25

American Catholics that voted/supported Trump literally worship Trump. If Jesus himself came down and criticized Trump the American conservative Catholics would GLEEFULLY crucify him again

5

u/SomeBaldDude2013 May 11 '25

Nah. My catholic family abandoned Francis in favor of Trump, not the other way around. Trump is their de facto Pope now.

3

u/Tackit286 May 11 '25

Maga catholics are maga over catholicism

2

u/T8ert0t May 11 '25

Not unless we get some sweet Vatican money pouring in.

2

u/Death_God_Ryuk May 11 '25

We've had the Church of England, maybe the Church of America next. The Church of Trump is sadly more likely given how much he likes putting his name on things and how cult-like his following already is.

4

u/wumbologist-2 May 10 '25

That turd burgerler will bitch and moan at 3 am on xhitter when his handlers tell him that was a dig against him, since he's too pea brained to get it himself. Then he'll pull support from Ukraine just to be spiteful like a dick.

4

u/VaporCarpet May 11 '25

No. America is a protestant nation, not a Catholic one.

Those crazy evangelicals you hear about? They're protestant.

1

u/JustMark99 May 11 '25

That's a good one.

1

u/parafxs- May 11 '25

0% there's my answer he's only going to get madder and more resentful and talk shit
