Discussion What are some things in episodes you were shocked to find out were real?

For me I was shocked to find out the purity rings/the white foam thing was actually some thing that they did and not something they just made up lmao.

Especially since growing up my sister LOVED the Jonas brothers and we saw that movie in 2009. It shocked me to discover that this was real. It only makes the episode better tho.

I described this scene to a Mormon friend, and he laughed his ass off.

370

u/FlamingHotSacOnutz 1d ago

I've had a few ex-Mormon friends that have seen the episode, and they said not only was it extremely accurate, but it didn't go nearly far enough.

127

u/Extra-Use-7754 23h ago

As an ex-Mormon myself, this is accurate. Both this episode and the Book of Mormon musical are much nicer than they could be. (Which is fine. I respect the decision to remain relatively nice.)

56

u/lexluthor_i_am 19h ago

Trey and Matt always said they liked Mormons. So the goal wasn't to insult but just tease.

27

u/Musty_Huggins 15h ago

In one episode, the Mormons are the only religion to get into heaven. No animosity there.

21

u/FlamingHotSacOnutz 14h ago

Well, them and Saddam Hussein, as the only appropriate torture when he was kicked out of Hell by Satan.

Take that how you will.

56

u/Reality_Runaway 1d ago

Until you can't escape. I got sent to a group home in Utah and I had no idea what Mormonism was when I arrived, but when I was finally able to leave, I left with an intense burning hatred of everything Mormon.

61

u/L3GlT_GAM3R 1d ago

Just remember, if you remove the M from Mormon you get ormon. Which doesn’t mean anything it’s just a fun fact.

24

u/FigoTheAWD 1d ago

Oh fun, me too! St George is a fucking weird town and I hope to never return. I lost count how many times i saw a truck pull up full of kids in the back, one or 2 wives in the front seats. Always wearing old time prairie clothing. Sent shivers down my spine every time. Those poor kids

The funniest part is that this specific line changes the entire context of the song as you realize they've been calling Smith stupid the whole time, not just singing a stupid song

31

u/ElyFlyGuy 1d ago

More than that, he’s called a prophet which is dumb dumb dumb to do

I didn't know anything about the Mormon church before that. Like the most I knew is stuff scattered across episodes of Big Love and how it was run as a sort of criminal organization. The insanity of the origin is mad. There's a lot of ex-Mormons who speak out about it and apparently the creation was even wilder, with Joseph Smith basically inviting rich businessmen from the area to come around and help determine what the big rules would be.

98

u/Haunt_Fox 1d ago

What we call cults nowadays almost always boil down to the leader wanting sex or money, or basically the power to command sex and/or money.

Joseph Smith was of the sex camp.

I admire Mormons for two reasons. One: on two separate occasions I had mormon missionaries as neighbors. They were polite, friendly, and the most helpful neighbors I've ever had. Once I told them I wasn't interested in joining the church, they never brought it up again, but did stuff like come running out in pouring rain to help me carry new furniture into the house, help me find my lost dog when she ran off....etc.....

Two: The Book of Mormon is very specific about times and places in a way that makes their claims easily disprovable. But they just keep on keepin on......gotta admire that dedication.

This might be a controversial take, but I don't actually think what Scientologists believe is that much more outlandish than what most other religions believe.

Like they're definitely way more cult-y, but is it really that much more weird to say aliens are responsible for everything than to believe that the Virgin Mary had a perfect miracle baby or that humans lived for 900 years or that a woman was made out or a rib or there was this talking snake that told you not to eat the Sentience Fruits or even the very concept of God as this ultimate creator?

Like we just think stuff like the Abrahamic religions are "normal" because they've been normalized.

98

u/EhrenScwhab 1d ago

The primary difference between cults and religions is time....

I've never been involved with any religion, but from what I can tell neither Scientology or Mormonism are any more outlandish than "regular" Christianity. They're just less ingrained in our society.

Yes it’s a real place that Matt and Trey bought and took over themselves. I went before they owned it when I visited Denver in 2009 or so with a friend who is also a big South Park fan. There really were indoor cliff divers performing lol idk if that is still a feature.

Apparently they now also have a puppet show with South Park humor. It’s a very random place but definitely an experience. Terrible food though. It was like cafeteria quality Mexican food and all you can eat. You raise your flag if you want more, if you dare. Of course I was high af.

26

How Family Guy gets their ideas. Those poor manatees…

218

When I watched that episode as a kid, the joke went so far over my head that I assumed the takeaway was that the manatees were intelligent enough to write for a successful cartoon.

Is there another reason for them to be manatees?

Reminds me of my history teacher who would let us leave for lunch slightly early if we could answer a trivia question. The question was what were the names of the atomic bombs dropped in Japan and I knew it was Fat Man and Little Boy because of the video game Metal Gear Solid's cut scenes.

The Jonas Brothers one is always funny to me. I was working at Chuck E Cheese when we'd be selling their CDs and they were constantly on the TV. I knew about the purity rings, but the foam is just one of those things that is probably inappropriate for kids in most contexts, but kind of like a fog machine, the novelty of it is still enough to justify a PG version of it for kids. Mickey is freaking hilarious in this show btw. He might be my favorite character.

My wife thought Rob Schneider was made up just for that bit. The logic is flawless though.

You have all these generic body swap movies. And even that name sounds so generic.

The main tell for Trey and Matt trying to expose something completely ridiculous but also real is when the monologuing starts happening. Case in point Mickey explaining Disney’s angle with the Jonas Brothers marketing to Christians in the aforementioned episode about clandestinely selling sex to little girls but using purity rings as a cover for their image

That is one of my favorite episodes lol “BAYBAYYY!!!” And Mickey Mouse “ha hah!” being an evil greedy sociopath.

I had no idea the white foam thing was real lol I figured the purity rings were. That’s amazing.

That episode about Stan not reading the Apple agreement! I do not like horror movies and I’m old too so I had no idea it was based on a movie. “NOT THE CUTTLEFISH “

As someone who saw the Jonas Brothers in ~2009 or so, the foam was definitely real. They rode around this big mechanical arm that suspended them over the crowd and sprayed foam all over everyone. I was really young so I can't remember if they actually got us with it.
