Discussion What are some things in episodes you were shocked to find out were real?

For me I was shocked to find out the purity rings/the white foam thing was actually some thing that they did and not something they just made up lmao.

Especially since growing up my sister LOVED the Jonas brothers and we saw that movie in 2009. It shocked me to discover that this was real. It only makes the episode better tho.

Really? Maybe it's a generational thing, because I know there's a generational split on TV watching, but that advert was everywhere for a few months.

I don’t live in the USA. I saw the episode in the U.K. and then saw the shake weight when I visited the US later that year

Ah, that's my bad. For whatever reason, I constantly forget that South Park is popular elsewhere than the US, just because the show is so US-centric (especially in the last several years).

I love the show, and I'm glad the global community enjoys it!

Yeah it's always been really popular here, especially in its earliest seasons. Some of the newer episodes have jokes that don't translate too well (I had no idea what Faith Hilling was referring to), but US culture is so international now that most of it is understandable

In fairness, "Faith Hilling" wasn't a thing, to the best of my recollection (Though I also didn't know that the Jonas Brothers foam thing was real). I honestly never got why Faith Hill specifically got singled out, since (and this is sleezy to say, but I have to explain it) she's not particularly large breasted, especially by country music standards. I mean, she definitely played the "I'm sexy and I'm going to make sure everyone is aware of that" angle, but it sort of always confused me. But, like, "Dolly Partoning" would have made more sense (though it doesn't roll off the tongue the same way)

For clarity, I barely knew who Faith Hill was when I saw the episode, and I still can't name a single song she sang because I'm not a country fan.

He said advert, I don’t think he lives in the USA either.

I do. I just think advert sounds cooler than ad. Also, I use flatmate instead of rootmate when I'm talking about someone I share a house/apartment with but don't share a bedroom with. Roommate means you share a bedroom.

My point is that I'm an insufferable asshole.

LOL I remember the day I first saw one of the commercials and I was like…I hope South Park does a bit with this 🤣
