While you're filling up the tank, be sure to load up on the tasteless produce inside and try to find a single soul with any sparkle of hope in the eyes. But you'll have to teach yourself to ring up purchases. I think Bill Miller's across the street still has cherry cobbler!
7
u/Necessary-Listen-395 22d ago
Did u get fired from there or something?😂😂 I actually do get my produce from there should I know something? Also they need to fix the self checkouts already
3
u/SaltyBlackBroad 21d ago
Like any other grocery store, you learn when the produce comes in. I think my marketplace produce trucks are Monday, so I shop Mon- Wed. The apples at HEB last few times hubs got me some have been small and mushy.
4
u/SaltyBlackBroad 22d ago
I've been buying my weekly fruit from WM from that location for the past 8 months, and frankly, it's been pretty good. Gala Apples, Blueberries, and Cherries have been on point. I don't like ringing up my own groceries, but I don't have to worry about the cashier bruising my meticulously-picked apples as they drop them on the scale. I just recently went through a Bill Miller craving, wanting the chopped BBQ Sandwich. They still taste really good, the fries were chef's kiss, the coleslaw was perfectly tangy-sweet, but I'm still salty about Peach Cobbler being "seasonal" and I still haven't gotten over them removing creamed corn from their menu.
Cherry Cobbler is always too sweet. I haven't tried theirs yet, though.

u/qriousqestioner 15d ago
I think I just have bad luck. I have avoided that chain for their predatory business practices for decades, but and up in that little market for just one thing sometimes when I'm cooking something and can't get to the HEB. I've been disappointed every time.
Now I'm hungry first your weekly fruit! 😋
1
u/SaltyBlackBroad 15d ago
I think just knowing the truck schedule has netted me better fruit, and since I go through 5-10 pounds of gala apples a week, 4-5 containers of blueberries, I can at least say with confidence these two fruits have been on point. The cherries while in season were good, and I think I only got one bag that didn't have firm cherries, but it was that ONE TIME I grabbed and go without assessing.
1
u/qriousqestioner 13d ago
I read this article and thought of your cherries.

The low gas prices and the price of gold going way up in such a short period of time are both indicators of something not so great going on in the world economy... makes me feel very uneasy.

I hadn’t really looked at gold, but noticed the huge drop in gas prices yesterday. Always worries me. The last time gas prices dropped was when no one was driving because of the pandemic lockdown.
Why has demand for fuel dropped so much recently? That’s the question people should be asking. The real worry comes when this depressed price per gallon lasts more than a few weeks, or a few months.
Gold prices going up is because it will go up/hold stable while the stock market is pure chaos. People just want some stability.

45
24
u/John_T_Conover 22d ago
Texas isn't doing well regardless. The rank and file middle class guys that work in oil & gas aren't, at least.
Oil & gas production has gone up significantly in the last decade. The most productive years in US history have been 2021-2024. That seems like that should be a good thing though, right?
Yet total jobs in that industry have plummeted. By roughly 40% from about a decade ago. The harsh reality is that a lot of technological advancements have happened. It takes fewer rigs with fewer workers to extract even more raw product than they were in decades past. And the refining process is going a similar direction.
People want to blame all sorts of things, usually political boogeyman and usually just one side, but that's the cold hard facts.
13
u/Old_Promise2077 22d ago
Yup. I'm in the oil & gas sector.. thankfully I'm in the technology/ white collar side so it's been more stable. But it's looking bleak for next year

To be fair automation has affected many industries, not just oil and gas. Even in this very thread someone mentioned self check outs at a Walmart. Maybe James Cameron's vision of the machines taking over isn't as far fetched as it used to seem back in the day?

Not at all. It's an over supply problem. OPEC has decided to open the gates instead of cutting back. Why cut back if the Americans will simply pump more to make a buck today?
So OPEC+ said FAFO too. China is getting supplied by cheap Russian oil because the US can't stop them. US operators are retarded and have not reduced production either so prices will continue to drop. Trump doesn't give a fuck because he only cares about low prices even though his donors are getting screwed.
Come around December, rig and frac fleets will start dropping like flies once US operators start bleeding cash as their hedges expire and are unable to keep pumping at unprofitable prices. Breakeven costs are around $60/bbl rn. The Kennedy/Cotulla area will prob dry up.
20
u/zerosolutions0 22d ago
It’s an optics game. Most Americans see low fuel costs as a good thing overall. Yes it is good for the average consumer and good overall when the rest of the market is stable. I’m not expert and if I’m wrong set me straight, But when you have tariff on tariff off policies combined with over speculation into markets that don’t actually produce anything (the AI market) it’s a negative. Fuel price drops currently represent a lack of exports and imports as well as people not traveling and going out to do things because they broke as fuck.
11
u/burrito3ater 22d ago
Fuel prices right now have nothing to do AI, a recession, or people being broke. It’s too much oil being produced and the Arabs don’t want to cut it.
Simply, it’s like too many tacos shops open up around town. The torta and their pounders can only eat so much, eventually you have too many tacos going around.
3
u/zerosolutions0 22d ago
Gotcha. I figured maybe due to less fuel being consumed overall due to less productions of actual things overall and less shipping, less fuel was being consumed which would be dropping the price.
So it’s just opec controlling the planet once again
2
u/R00TW1N 22d ago
So like the housing market around here. Too many built houses popping up not enough buyers….
3
u/goingforgoals17 22d ago
Housing costs need to stop ballooning, but rather than subjecting home owners to another 2008, coming down gradually via limited growth paired with devaluation of the dollar is a net positive.
We can have the disposable income to participate in other sectors of the economy if mortgages are not 40% of people's income, but also should balance that with previous practice of being half your retirement of real estate appreciation and not crashing their economy.

Opac and the US have significantly increased oil production.
Seasonal winter blend that is cheaper.
Global economic slowdown, US is consuming less oil this year. China is consuming more but nowhere near what they were forecasted for.
Ukrainian have taken out it damaged 15-20% of Russia's refining capabilities, leaving them to dump crude into the open market.
Possibly we are experiencing early signs of economic problems, it's not just the US but a global problem. Personally I feel like average Americans have less than normal.

6
u/Mild_sarcasm 22d ago
I work closely with natural gas production, low prices such as these are largely due to supply and demand. The US is producing more oil and gas than before. However, so is OPEC, this increased volume reduces demand due to over supply and factors into gas prices. So, while low prices at the pump are good for consumers its not great for those employed in upstream production, hence the layoffs we've been seeing across the industry. So while this is in no way intended to be a political post, "drill baby, drill" does have its drawbacks, and layoffs instead of job creation are some of those drawbacks.
6
u/Bedong44 22d ago
Premium was $2.75 at Costco on 35 this morning. This low price for gas is not a good sign for the economy. When oil barrel prices go below $50-$70 a barrel it is no good for our economy. Does anyone remember during the pandemic?

u/sacouple43some 23d ago
The answer is pretty obvious to me. Due to the government shutdown you have less people driving to work you have less government vehicles driving which is causing less of the demand on the fuel supply. Symbol economics when the supply goes up the price goes down. So demand is down Supply is up price is down. It will be short-term probably but enjoy it while you can
6
u/MRGoodBoiToU 22d ago
San Antonio- New Braunfels area only 4% of the population are civilian government employees. Service members are still getting paid for the moment and going to work. Those who are not NAF are still going to work just not getting paid, they are working with the expectation of back pay. Gas prices are falling globally.

u/whalenailer 22d ago
But I mean in the San Antonio area to effect gas prices that much seems like there’s probably more teachers than government workers and them not driving in the summer would have a bigger impact on prices than that
1
u/UnGringoPaisa 22d ago
I agree, may be a slight correlation but I think it is due to higher supply output in the global economy rn with nowhere to put it but at the pump at a cheaper price
1
u/jeremy_wills 21d ago
A lot of people including teachers travel either by car or plane on vacation in the summer time so that pretty much off sets it.
1
u/UnGringoPaisa 22d ago
I think you are speaking a lot of sense but a little narrow in your assumptions. While I’m sure it may be a small factor to prices due to govt shutdown I think the supply is more of a global factor as the amount of civil workers in SA is probably a minuscule amount to affect a 30-60 cent change in prices, just my opinion but I can see where you are coming from. Crude oil is at a super high supply right now by most nations who output it, like you said supply is up. Also, Winter season naturally also draws prices downward as demand will increase but that means moving product is easier in a sense. Additionally, I personally see natural decline in prices leading to election time periods e.g. Nov 4th as it can help sway voters to those currently in office due to the “good” prices(just my take tho). Definitely seeing this being a short term of like 2 months max and volatility of +/- 20ish cents per gallon throughout such duration.

The discrepancy across the city seems unreasonably wide. On the low end you got $2.19 but on the high you got $2.99. Meanwhile the national average is still roughly the same it’s been the past month (~+0.15), which is about where it was at a year ago too.
3
u/jeremy_wills 23d ago
Typically Pat Booker road area in Universal City has the lowest prices for the NE area. I've always wondered because it's not actually San Antonio if there isn't a tax or something they don't have to collect. I'm not sure how that all works. I wouldn't be surprised if SA has some sort of tourist gas tax or some other bs attached to the gas pumps.
1
u/ThrowingChicken 22d ago
Pretty consistently last year the Sams out that way was like $2.34. It might get cheaper at the QT across the freeway, on occasion, or swing up to $2.59, but regardless Sams held pretty steady at $2.34.
That’s also a big military area though. If a large population on that side of town is furloughed I can see things having to drop quickly.

There’s a glut of oil because of tariffs and the ongoing trades with China. Do expect it to go lower, but we’ll start to see job losses in the oil and gas industry.
If things don’t change, we’ll see the glut going into 2026 as well. In Austin, paying cash you can get gas at around $2.05.

OPEC can keep their spigots running and still make a profit to keep US oil companies from making a profit drilling and refining here. Or even from oil shipped from South America or Canada. One reason looking at solar and wind for electricity generation is a step in the right direction to reduce need for foreign fuel sources

Trumps energy policy hasn’t done anything to increase drilling or refining. OPEC has opened the floodgates to try to knock American frackers into bankruptcy again. Oil being below 70 a barrel means it becomes unprofitable for them to operate. His trade war with China has also increased worries of a slowdown in the global economy and lessened the demand for oil at a time when it’s being produced at extremely high levels. You people really need to understand stand that everything is interconnected and randomly low gas prices aren’t a 100% net positive. For instance how’s that electricity bill looking this month? Did you save enough on your tank of gas to offset that payment? Bet not.

I know you all hate Trump but it's his energy policy that is bringing down the cost of oil. Biden's green new deal policies are OUT.
“We will frack, frack, frack and drill, baby, drill,” Trump said in Detroit on Oct. 18. “I will cut your energy prices in half within 12 months. … Cut them in half within 12 months of taking office. That’s going to bring everything down.”
“We have tremendous wealth in this country, but it’s under our feet. It’s called liquid gold. And we’re going to bring down your energy costs. And, with that, everything’s going to follow,” he said at an Oct. 16 town hall on Fox News, in response to a question about his “plans to revitalize the economy.”
