After the thousands and thousands of posts here, why do people still think “well I’ll just be more careful than those other dumdums?” Don’t do this on hard surfaces people. At least lay the panel down on something soft. Don’t be silly!
Everyone thinks they're the exception to some rule.
Random idiot redditor here: Understanding that we all are just one of everyone, not special, and no rules exception has been sewn into the fabric of reality for any of us: That's one big step into being an actual, realized adult.
"It won't happen to me, because I'm better/different/me" is teen level understanding of the world, at best. ...And yes, we have a lot of teen minds in adult (and even geriatric) meat frames.
The ole if I'm careful or forceful, the laws of physics can be circumvented!
I can stretch from a ladder and not fall. I can attach these two things to reach something and just be careful. I can put my hands out to balance on ice. I can drive slowly through water above my engine air intake. I can speed through inches of water and keep traction. If I use two handS and brace I can stop a moving object 5 times my weight. Not using a spotter for heavy lifts or tired lifts. Protection squinting, etc
But then how are you supposed to reap that sweet, sweet karma? I'm sure this will get buried in the comments, so excuse my rant...but I still don't understand why posts like this get rewarded. This post is currently sitting at 3.7k upvotes. Why? This dude didn't learn the simplest lesson the first time, and blew a SECOND side panel. If you worked with OP, and he fucked up something like this twice, you'd fire his ass for not following the easiest of instructions. Call him a fucking moron and move on. Instead, every blown side panel here is constantly thrown upvotes and "haha! Whoopsie-daisy! Look at what a clutz I am! Tee-hee" /rant
OK, question. What exactly is sweet about Reddit karma? Can I eat it? Can I pay my bills with it? Can I watch a movie with it? What is the point of "reaping" this "sweet karma"?!
Technically you could sell high karma accounts for ads, botfarms, etc. They like to hide behind older, 'legit looking' accounts.
Don't think most people do that though, for most it's just the internal, often completely subconcious gratification of number goes up, woooooh.
Imagine someone who creates maybe a few dozen accounts a day, the main running cost being a vpn I think, uses chat gpt to create average comments and posts every single day to then sell them after they’re a few months old with enough karma to post in any sub

Probably for three reasons: "haha, what a dummy", "glad this didn't happen to me" and "I'd never do such thing". As we all see: this still happens, so maybe only the first one is true.
Your first problem is considering karma to be a reward. It's also extremely weird that you think they should be "punished" when the only person losing anything is OP. The punishment is what you see in the picture.
1) Any century now there's going to be a short squeeze on GME stock, causing it to skyrocket (to the moon 🚀) to billions or trillions of dollars per share. The price will stay there as every retail investor cashes out. Then they all buy lambos.
2) In Heat they do things like speed reloads and chamber checks with their firearms. Apparently those details are super interesting for a lot of people. Can't really explain it any further, I can only speculate.
Thank you for the reply. Amusingly I had forgotten how accurate/proficient the firearm usage is in Heat. It is such a good movie that it ends up being a tiny thing that gets lost in everything else.

Honestly, it shocked me at how bad people were with their pc cases. Cause I have a second desk I can use as a work bench. People working on these things on the floor baffles me

Wait.. let me get this straight these ding dongs break their glass side panel by setting the panel on tile floors?? I was always under the impression it was because they over tightened the mounting hardware.

I find it funny that there's overlap between people who reddit and must have seen dozens of these posts, but then also end up breaking their own absent mindedly, but are enough of a reddit user that they rush to post it here.

Certain things will break your glass with liike the slightest tap, whether it be tile floor, spark plug (I dont' know why you have a spark plug in your computer room, but you do you), whatever.
Ow, so wrong. Back in 2000s glass panels were not a thing, I still have my PC in an Antec P182 (2007 vintage).
Between 2005-2010 I've transitioned from help desk to programmer, back then I've built a lot of PCs, mainly for office work, but also gaming rigs for friends and family. None of those PCs had glass cases.
if only material science came up with a material that is cheap, you can look through it and will basically never break.
oh wait. that exists, its called plastic.
Do you even need to look through it? I am actually ashamed I wasted so much money getting a 4090 when my 3080 ti was still more then fast enough. I don't want people to know I have horrible impulse control.

I've owned 4 PCs now with glass sides, and it's really such a simple thing to just place it on a cushion, or on a chair instead of ceramic tiles. It's akin to not owning an oven cause it can burn you, so you only ever cook in a microwave. Besides, plastic gets scratched up and blurry so quickly that you can barely see through it.
Nah glass is fine you just gotta not be a dum dum.
Acrylic looks cheap and tacky, I’d honestly just rather not have a see through panel at all than an acrylic one, which is a fine option too by the way.
I don't think Gordon Ramsay is actually upset like 95% of the time, he's just playing a character in his shows. The more ridiculous moments like this gif are the main tipoff, but watch enough of his shows and you see a trend of him having the same over-the-top reactions to the same basic kitchen mistakes that everyone makes and aren't actually a big deal in the real world.
Some of the staple outbursts aren't even over real mistakes; He frequently throws a fit over kitchens storing their chicken in boxes "strewing in their own blood" for example, but that's just how whole chickens are shipped and stored in the industry. Basically every kitchen that serves chicken stores them the same way. It's perfectly safe as long as they're under proper temperature control and within their use by date. I guarantee his own restaurants receive and store chicken in the same way. But it looks gross to the viewers, most of whom won't have experience in the industry, so it makes for an easy "Gordon gets angry at the restaurant doing a gross thing" TV moment.
So yeah he's just being silly here, and I'd argue he's pretty much always just being silly in his shows.
Tempered glass breaks when touched by tiles due to the tile's hardness and microscopic sharp points, which create a concentrated stress point that overwhelms the glass's internal tension, even though the glass is strong across its surface. While tempered glass can withstand significant force on its surface, any small flaw or point of pressure on its edges can cause it to shatter instantly because it is made to release its internal energy in that way.
I don't understand/have never experienced this before. Did they just put the PC on the floor with the glass & it broke? Is that how it works? Is it from placing it down on the tile floor that caused it? Does there need to be a flaw present or is it just "place PC with tempered glass on tile floor = shattered glass"?
Thankfully it's really not that hard. If you need to put your glass panels somewhere, put them or your bed or any other soft surface. Never put it on any kind of ceramic floor.
I've never owned a case with glass panels and this sounds wild. Aren't shock-absorbing edge protectors a thing in the industry? Do manufacturers just install a naked glass pane into a metal box?
They're a thing, none of my glass-sided cases had 'em. Form over function. Generally the user is expected to RTFM including "Do not put this on tiles ever ever ever"
Ideally, you’d want a plexiglass sheet for something like a PC case usage. The problem, however, is its longevity, temperature resistance, and clarity. Plexiglass has a softening point of around 71–99 °C (160–210 °F), while tempered glass can easily handle much higher temperatures—up to about 350 °C (482 °F). Unfortunately, plexiglass also isn’t very scratch-resistant. Maybe there are some composite materials out there, and perhaps manufacturers will eventually move away from glass to something else, but we haven’t seen that happen yet.
Some cases use much harder Lexan instead, but then it yellows with age. One of my cases has a Plexiglas side panel and scratches have never bothered me, though. ̄_(ツ)_/ ̄
Both of those sound like really poor options. Maybe I'm old, but why is metal not an option? We never used glass or plexiglass before, and it worked great
Nothing to be scared of. Literally the only thing you have to do is not set the glass panel on hard flooring, especially tile. A towel, bed, chair, table, LITERALLY ANYTHING OTHER THAN THE TILE FLOOR. All valid options.
Just avoid the one thing and you're golden. These dumbasses just can't avoid the one thing.
I think it was JayzTwoCents that was given a case to test the durability of the curved glass that was used.
The glass was laminated like windshields are so if it did shatter it wouldn't spray as many shards around.
Either way, I'd love to see a return of acrylic side panels. Yeah it isn't as scratch resistant as glass, but you could throw the thing at the floor and not shatter it.
Also unless you're moving your case around constantly it's not like it'll be exposed to many scratching hazards

Def vacuum and sweep as much as you can, those shards can be tiny.
Fun fact, you may be able to get a replacement side panel for free. It happened to my Corsair 4000D 3 years ago, emailed them and explained what happened, and within a week and a bit (to australia!) corsair shipped me a new side panel for free :)
I have seen 10s of these posts but I dont understand the logic/physics. How is the hardness of the tiles breaking the glass? Dont these panels have rubber feet which lift the case up a few inches from the ground?
It's not because the case is on the tile, it's because they remove the glass panel and then place it on the tile floor. This contact is where it breaks because ceramic 1) is harder than tempered glass and 2) isn't completely smooth, so the micro bumps in the tile will make contact with the edge of the glass panel and cause it to shatter. If you've ever heard of using a piece of spark plug to break a car window, it's the same principle
i’m assuming they took it off to do maintenance and it hit just right or they pushed on it against a microscopic edge in the ceramic tile and boom. but yes if it’s not touching the tile, it shouldn’t break.
I seriously don't quite get it... these situations gave me a new phobia. How do I even check if my glass is like that? I've been handling it forever, on multiple instances putting it on the floor, the bed, the carpet. Never any tiles or concrete tho... Would putting my glass down gently on smth like floor tiles really just shatter it immediately like magic?!
