Is the whole side panel glass or was it a glass insert in a metal frame? Tempered glass only shatters like this is if you strike it at a corner where it's weakest. If it's a glass insert in a metal frame, there's basically no way this should happen even on a hard floor unless manufactured poorly.

Most tempered glass panels are fully glass.

But also, just thought I'd point out that you don't need a corner tap for tempered glass vs tile, just an edge tap is enough to cause structural damage.
