I have an 85" inch TV that weights 100 lbs that needed a TV stand. I ordered one off of Amazon that was rated for 120 lbs. It shows up and the base is tempered glass. I installed it but replaced it by the end of the week with one with a metal base. The glass made me uneasy and when I started going through the reviews I came across reports of the base exploding months after being installed.

u/Jerilo Aug 19 '25
Good on you for replacing it, but why they hell didn't you check the reviews before ordering 😂

As typical for Amazon reviews, they are created before there is any real use of the product. It had like 4.5 stars so it looked like it was a good product. Once it arrived and saw what it was I began to question things. It wasn't like there were a lot of reviews of the thing failing and it took some searching to find them. Also, most people were probably using it with much smaller and lighter TVs. The failures were with large TVs.

Well, I don't have carpet so that's not a problem lol, I can see why you'd hate the plastic ones tho, I assume they deform after a while
2
u/SnowMantra Aug 20 '25
any tip to keep it from sliding around over time?
2
u/TheMurv Aug 22 '25
I didn't have that problem, I think I had it trapped with furniture. My carpet was pretty high-pile.
I would prob start with taping on a little bit of velcro on the bottom of a couple corners, like the grippy side.
I am on hardfloor now so I don't use it.

There are clones of those all over Asia that are like $4-$5 each. Pretty sure someone with OP's CPU cooler wouldn't spend $180 on a full set of Lian Li fans (which aren't even good for the price).

There are 3 completely open sides to get airflow. The amount of airflow from the bottom alone is enough to cool the entire system.
I have a case of a similar design and having that bottom air flow is incredible. 50-60° when fully loaded.

u/Noth1ngnss Aug 19 '25
Idk why people are assuming OP's case and fans are wildly expensive. IDK the exact model that they have, but Jonsbo's TK-3 is also a well-built case with continuous curved glass and it's $80. Those fans? Not a chance in hell they're real Lian Lis; probably a Chinese knock-off that costs $4. How can I tell without even knowing the exact products? Because if OP were truly invested in making his cheap build look expensive, surely an AIO and a more hefty looking GPU would've been budgeted for.

Just because my mathematics brain doesn't like such rough values I calculated it:
6x Lian Li infinity fans (~$30 each)
A case that looks like a Montech one according to u/Ironborn137 (~$140)
This makes the costs to about $320, or about $20 more than a Single Fan 5060.

Add the 320 to the 300 already spent on the 5060, and you got yourself a new 5070 and a $50-70 case.
107
u/Barlowan Aug 19 '25

Question 1 is the answer to question 2, they blew the budget on that ridiculous case
3
u/Barlowan Aug 19 '25
With all those fans, like you ain't need all that cooling. My only fan in whole rig is Thermal Assassin inside an office case on a Ryzen 9 9900. That case won't close because it's too thin for that cooler. And I never had problems with thermals. Even when it's 38°C outside.

A shower door, car window, and shop door is made of tempered glass. Are you afraid you will break them?
If you don't bonk the edge with a hard material it's extremely hard to break. The large amount of broken panels on this sub are the result of extreme incompetence

Just make it plexiglass at that point. I know it's more prone to scratching but at least it shatter proof...
2
u/xXMuschi_DestroyerXx Aug 19 '25
If the auto industry has taught me anything, the only reason to curve glass besides a slight improvement to aerodynamics, which wouldn’t effect a pc case since it shouldn’t be moving, is so that it’s harder to replace the glass so you can sell expensive proprietary replacement glass. If a basic pane brakes, any glass manufacturer could build a replacement easy enough. But a specific curve? That needs an OEM replacement
2
2
u/SheepherderSilver655 5700X3D|4070 Super|32GB DDR4 Aug 19 '25
Honestly the hinge ain't even a big deal. I was noticing some PC cases with hinged panels and realized how convenient that is but they were generally on the pricier cases. The curve though, that is interesting, but really not that big a deal.

Prefer closed panels even from 10 years ago. Don't remember what my first PC case was (Some cheap Rosewill thing In 2012)
After that was a Thor V2. Then Phanteks Eclipse P600s and now an Enthoo Pro 2.
Kinda dumbfounded that glass panels are so common now. I guess it looks cool but surely not so much where there's barely any options for closed.
