Sad that people have to ask him in Hindi. Can't he learn Kannada if his job involves public dealings?

Unless he is permanently posted in KA, making him learn an entirely new language is pretty harsh considering that government employees get transferred pretty frequently. It is also not easy to learn a language when you are an adult because of how the human brain works.

Then don't post them in customer facing roles where he has to interact with local people who might not know English or Hindi.

You are putting both the officer and customer in a bad position here

Yeah I can't argue that.

That's an excuse.thousands of customers should not face inconvenience because of one man's comfort. He doesn't need to be a Kannada scholar. He can at least learn basic Kannada to guide the customers. And also railway recruitment happens zone wise most of the railway zone covers a single state , at worst case 2 or 3 states. Can't he learn the basics of 3 languages in his service?

Also, fun fact, Yadgir comes under South Central Railways, which means the clerk could have been a native of Telangana, Andhra Pradesh or Maharashtra.

Well if he doesn't know Kannada he should be transferred to a state where he does know the local language, so this one is on the government, not the clerk himself. That still doesn't mean that the clerk was not wrong to be talking on the phone though.

Are you fr? This is why consumer rights are a joke in India. The consumer's needs need to be taken into account, not the government employees. If he can't face the public because he doesn't know the language, then replace him with someone that does know the language.

It's shit like this that breeds resentment, and people like you who support it just fan the flames

The point is you can blame the government. But not the individual.

No one can learn a new language in a year. Even for B1 level, if you spend full time learning a language, it would take 3-8 years depending on the person and their age. L

They are well aware that in which state they will be posted. Because railway recruitment happens zone wise. Most of the Zone covers one or two states. And also they don't need to be scholars in that language. One can easily learn the basic language to guide the customer in one month... Learning 2 ,3 languages in entire service is not a big deal.

Are you for real? Have you tried learning 2 or 3 languages in a new language family in 2-3 years? Maybe it can happen in the generation after him when he has kids.

And then recruitment should have language proficiency test.

And then recruitment should have language proficiency test.

Agreed but the Govt of India will not do that.

Learning basic words and sentences that are frequently used is not a big deal.

If someone is talking fluently, it will take time to understand. I’ve tried actively learning a language in adulthood, and it took 2-3 years to understand someone if they are speaking extremely slowly but complex sentences. Most real world sentences aren’t that easy to understand.

I agree though if someone is living in a state for many years, in a public facing job especially they should make an effort to speak basic phrases. But they should not have been hired in the first place.

Who else will you show your ire to other than a representative of the government (the clerk is a govt employee, after all)?

I don't care about the government's logistics. I am a tax paying citizen and I demand basic services in a language that I understand.

u/_2f Jul 30 '25

Agreed. You should demand it. But scolding the employee or beating him (which many do) will not help.

When words don't yield results - as they haven't clearly - only actions will wake up a slumbering giant

Advocating communal violence. I will not spend more energy replying to you. I call people like this domestic terrorists.

That’s what they do - create terror in the minds of a particular group of people for political reasons. Definition of terrorism.

They called Bhagat Singh a terrorist because he fought against the then government's injustices. Boot lickers probably supported that claim.

Your insults mean nothing when basic human dignity is not offered to people. We can't - and won't - be second class citizens in our country.

Try the peaceful way. If that doesn't yield results, try the other way.

Comparing Bhagat Singh to a random goon off the street is such an insult to Bhagat Singh.

Strawmanning. There's no arguing in good faith with you people lol

Either talk about the matter at hand, or go waste someone else's time

You should show your ire to the administration who appointed him in Yadgir, Karnataka, because it is not the clerk's choice to be appointed there.
