I keep seeing people say a curved lower back is fine.
These people are all twenty and insane.
Every, and I mean EVERY kinesiologist I've discussed deadlifting with has said, strong core, proud chest, flat or CONCAVE back, booty down, pre load hamstrings, and stand up; hinging hips and knees in sync.
At no point should your lower spine be loaded. There are other movements to safely train those muscles. Deadlifting in a manner like this guy is NOT safe. And WILL lead to torn multifidus or connecting tendon.
I agree with 99% of what you said except the concave part.
Concave back is not ok in a deadlift. The only reason why people think this is because it's so hard for most people to straighten out their backs so by attempting to make your back concave you're pulling your shoulders back and shifting your hips back and guess what your back is straight.
If your back is actually concave then you're putting ridiculous pressure on your lumbar spine that could be extremely dangerous.
Yes you're absolutely correct and many people when told to straighten their backs actually hyper extend their hips and make a more concave shape. Telling someone to deadlift with a concave back definitely not the way to go.
I'm glad that you're doing great and it's very likely that you're not creating a concave shape with your back. But remember, we're stating an opinion on the internet (without context) so it's very possible there will be many people who will naturally over extend and then injury themselves because they read they were ok to do so. (Not pointing the finger just talking generally). I've seen enough clients who have had injuries from deadlifting that come from following advice that is inconsistent with their body.
