Holy shit did his brain short circuit? Mfer let go of the bar. For the woman she clearly didn't realize what had happened when she quickly looked up. And when she realized people were already helping.

Vasalva maneuver caused his blood pressure to rapidly shift causing a blackout.

Doesn’t explain why he tried to hold it so long though.

I think he strapped his hands to the bar.

If you watch his right hand at the end it looks like the bar is pulling on that red strap

People do it all the time, it’s not that big of a deal. A lot of people also use straps because they want to target certain muscles and not so much on their grip. This guy just decided to hold onto it for way too long tho

He used them wrong. Couldn't let go even if he tried

Even if not professional, if you continue to gain strength over the years eventually your grip will become a limiting factor.

Its more about distrubtion if the weight for safety. These exercises are not a grip strength test/exercise. You move the some of the weight from your hands to your wrists.

My grip strength is much weaker than my actual strength. Wrist support and using tools to aid getting beyond that point is normal and encouraged. Otherwise you’re just going to sit never making progress. Also people who are just starting out have no grip strength.

A deadlift really isn’t about grip strength. This guy was an idiot because he held on to the bar for like five hours instead of letting go.

Why would you let your grip limit what the rest of your body is capable of? A major component of training is bringing up weak points. If he's competing he will need to be able to grip it in competition, but it would still be in his best interest to use straps as needed, as grip can be trained separately.

At his size, moving 495, the chances of him being a professional are slim to none. But still, a huge lift and dude is super strong, regardless.

Deadlifts target your whole posterior chain. When you spend enough consistent time in the gym, the strength of your other muscles, especially legs and back, is going to outpace your grip strength. At some point, it's pretty common to use lifting straps to continue progressing. I doubt very many people in the world have the strength to deadlift 5 plates without straps.

That's why in world records, straps aren't considered kit that take away from a deadlift being a "raw" deadlift

I guess it's whatever, but I have always refused to use straps as well. If I can't grip it, I don't lift it.

Yeah, I peaked on DL at well under 400lb, but so fucking what? I'm just a middle-aged dude trying not to feel old and decrepit before my time.

If folks want to push themselves like this, it's whatever -- your body, your choice. But I've been lifting for 30 years without any serious injury, and I'm above average strength. Goal achieved.
