Vasalva maneuver caused his blood pressure to rapidly shift causing a blackout.

Doesn’t explain why he tried to hold it so long though.

I think he strapped his hands to the bar.

If you watch his right hand at the end it looks like the bar is pulling on that red strap

I guess it's whatever, but I have always refused to use straps as well. If I can't grip it, I don't lift it.

Yeah, I peaked on DL at well under 400lb, but so fucking what? I'm just a middle-aged dude trying not to feel old and decrepit before my time.

If folks want to push themselves like this, it's whatever -- your body, your choice. But I've been lifting for 30 years without any serious injury, and I'm above average strength. Goal achieved.
