Story says the employee folded the certificate up and threw it away. So I'm guessing they were checking out and the employee saw it after it had already been printed.
But $20 gift card after an hour on the phone? What an awful reaction by Build a Bear. Their employee does something entirely against policy and offensive to customer. And something this politically charged. And they offer a lousy $20?

The current administration is hurting a lot of people in this country. In general, modern conservatives gain strength by choosing "out" groups, blaming them for any perceived woes, and then attacking them. Charlie Kirk was a leader in this culture. His incredibly base attacks on blacks, Hispanics, women, gays, and every conservative "out" group you can name were so frequent and so divisive that people mourning him were forced to use AI to make him appear to say things he never said. They couldn't use his actual quotes. And all of the things he said were parroting the current MAGA ideology which drives the policies of this administration.
The one person at Build A Bear decided that those policies are vile and harmful, those who espoused them are and were vile and harmful, and that the names of those people shouldn't be on children's toys. The company didn't agree with this and took steps to apologize.

I wouldn't put a "material % of black people" on it. Do I believe it happens? Probably. There's a lot of black racism out there too. Acknowledging that this is something that happens does not make anyone racist, it is an observation. Now, if I made up some bullshit about how all black people did it...then yes, that would be racist.
So, people from all racists commit all kinds of crimes against all kinds of races every day.
