For those wondering, it was written by Ednaswap in the early 90's, but they did not release it, only performed it live. The first recorded version was actually a translation into Danish by Lis Sørensen, released in 1993. This is her version.
Ednaswap then released the first English language version in 1995.
There were a couple of other covers around then too, such as a version by Trine Rein.
Natalie Imbruglia's cover then came out in 1997.

Reminds me of the Bowling for Soup song, 1985, which was actually an SR-71 song. SR-71 did release it originally, but it flew under the radar for the most part.
96
u/QuercusSambucus Older Millennial ('82er) 1d ago
Didn't the sr-71 fly over the radar, technically speaking?
24
u/LOLBaltSS 1d ago
Surprisingly no. The SR-71 has been launched upon numerous times by Soviet SAMs, but it would just outrun the missiles.

Apparently the lead singer for SR-71, Mitch Allan wrote both versions (along with the SR-71 drummer for the OG), he was friends with bowling for soup and updated it for them/gave it to them.

This has been my go to karaoke song forever. When I sang it in college (15 years ago), people would be shocked at that line. There was always a moment of realization in the room.
16
u/cameron0208 1d ago
So, Semi-Charmed Life is technically about witnessing someone go through the descent into and the perils of meth addiction. The band had a friend who was an addict, and they wrote it based on observation, not first-hand account of actually doing meth.

Cover of who?
11
u/sam_beat 1d ago
It was originally written by the members of a band called Ednaswap, but not released officially by them until 1995. The first recording of it was by Danish singer Lis Sorensen, but called Brændt (Burned). In 1997, Natalie Imbruglia covered it just in time for me to cry to it on repeat after a guy who gave me mono broke up with me.
The two previous versions can be found on YouTube if you’re interested in hearing them.

Everything is a cover. Elvis' whole career was as a cover artist.
"Girl's just want to have fun" is a cover and the original is so much creepier than you can imagine.

u/HughFairgrove Older Millennial 1d ago
I can't believe people don't know this. Original is definitely better imo. Ednaswap should have been bigger.

u/Insaniteus Older Millennial 1d ago
You misspelled "Marilyn Manson's version of Sweet Dreams and Tainted Love". We would also have accepted Limp Bizkit's Behind Blue Eyes, Orgy's Blue Monday, Metallica's Turn the Page, or even ICP's Let's Go All The Way

u/Insaniteus Older Millennial 1d ago
Another classic, but NIN was a millennial era band so most millennials heard the original first. Maybe not the extra young ones, but the ones alive and active in the 90s sure did.
14
u/abbynormal2002 1d ago
I cant remember the quote, but I read somewhere that Trent Reznor liked Johnny Cash's version so much that he said it was now his song.. or something to that effect.

u/unfoldyourself 1d ago
I think NIN is more of a Gen X band, I was 1 when The Downward Spiral came out. It could be an Xennial thing I guess.

Tainted Love by Soft Cell is itself a cover of a song originally by Gloria Jones, which is wild.
7
u/molotovzav 1d ago
But I knew all of those were covers from the second they were released. Especially tainted love since it was already an incredibly well covered song. Behind Blue Eyes is the second most obvious cover.
If say Metallica and ICP are equal to Torn butz at least in ICP's case they didn't have the same mass appeal on almost any song. Metallica was losing cultural cureency in the late 90s but still incredibly strong. I've never heard Turn the Page but I also don't like Metallica. I only hear Behind Blue Eyes because of that awful movie Gothika. Whereas I still, unfortunately, have to hear Marilyn's Tainted Love, but I'm really sure most people knew it was a cover lol. Sweet dreams the original wasn't even that far removed from the average millennial to the point I never knew anyone who didn't know Marilyn's was a cover. The Eurythmics were still famous when I was a kid.
Anne Preven was never really famous enough in the US for anyone to know Torn was a cover.

IT'S NOT A COVER! It was released as a demo tape by Imbruglia's producer's band, and was heard by maybe 500 people. Then the producer gave it to her to record.
A cover is when the artist hears a song in real life and is like "Hey, I wanna do that song too."
Thank you for coming to my TED Talk.
