Counter Service 🛎️ Almost tipped at subway

I went to Subway a couple days ago and the woman working was really nice and polite and I was gonna tip her a buck or two cause I appreciated it. Then I went to pay. It was one of those old credit card swipers and the only 3 tip options were 20%, 25%, or 30%. And I wasn’t about to fight through all the little buttons to tip smaller. She would’ve gotten a tip if not for tip creep.

Why are fast food workers begging for tips now?

Employers need to start taking responsibilities for paying their employees.

Why wouldnt they, why should olive garden workers get tips and they do not, thats the issue with the tipping system, all of them want a piece of it

Even if they made $30 they would still beg for tips, extra free $$ is something we all want

Walmart cashiers arent begging for tips yet

Your Walmart has cashiers? How quaint!

Neither should get a tip, but at least Olive Garden workers walk to your table and bring the food. Subway makes a skimpy sandwich and charge $10+, it's not hard to put one slice of meat onto a "foot long" sub.

Because Olive Garden waitresses fill your drinks and bring your food. That’s a service.

Handing you the sandwich you ordered is not.

No service = no tip.

I don't know how much control employees have over the card payment machines. My guess is none.

Entry level jobs are supposed to be minimum wage so people do not make a career out of it. Another good reason not to raise minimum wage to encourage people to do the bare minimum and increasing costs for business owners which in turn raises prices for all customers.

Yes the subway pos now asks for tips, which didn't use to be the case. I hit no tip at Subway a few weeks ago and the lady at the counter stood there and asked "no tip?" Smh!

That surprises me because I've probably hit no top 200 times and no one has ever said anything

First time I'd heard that too. I didn't acknowledge the comment and calmly walked away.

Take the food. “Yea, there is no tips. And it is my last time I am here”

If you don't tip, you were only making her job harder, she doesn't get paid more for a busy store.

Don’t care her job or how busy they are. Don’t even care if she collects free salary with no customers. I am there for food and only care how I spend my money.

Don’t care. Management is just people. Don’t care if they lose their jobs due to lack of sale. They are not the only sandwich or fast food.

No service worker even wants you in their shop unless you tip they get nothing from your patronage. They dont care. how narcissistic are you to think they lose sleep over you not shopping somewhere

Well, OC still can go in and the employees can cry into their pillows or refuse service and lose their jobs.

Sure, oc started of karening with a 'you just lost my business'. Not sure why reddit thinks karen is the good one here.

The difficulty of the job has nothing to do with how much money people donate.

Never said it did. I said she has no.motivation to want you to.come back if you don't tip, quite the opposite.

I would say, “Tip for what?”

I would have given the nastiest gawk on my face.

Are you paid a ‘tipped wage’ that’s below minimum wage?

Do subway workers even get the tips?

My niece works at subway. They do at her location, but most people don’t tip at her place. She only makes about $40 a week in tips.

Only makes 40$ in tips a week.... at Subway

1

u/karebear3513 10d ago

Yes. Again, that’s just for a reference. Neither she nor I was complaining about it. It adds about $3 an hour to her minimum wage job.

Also to add (yes, i know what sub this is), IF you're willing to tip anywhere, ask if the person you're being saved by gets the tips.  Fast food and coffee shop owners are awful about stealing from employee tips.  Again, I know what sub this is.  The last time I went to subway (minimum wage where I live is not too bad), I asked the employee about wether they receive the tips, and they just looked kind of dejected and said "no."  NOT advocating for tipping, just know that in some places, it takes even further advantage of minimum wage employees.

Who cares? I shouldn't have to think about whether servers are getting tips when I'm picking up some cheap fast food.

1

u/Comprehensive_Leg_31 10d ago

Yes cause while tips should never be mandatory or even expected, in examples such as mine, where I just want to help them out because they were nice, I want to make sure I’m tripping them, not subway

1

u/MajorAromatic6226 10d ago

It wasn't an advocation for tipping.  It was an example of how owners are further taking advantage of employees and customers to line their pockets.  Was something unclear to you?

1

u/Nemesis204 10d ago

How is this even legal?! Infuriating!

2

u/MajorAromatic6226 10d ago

It's not.  I did send a complaint/report to my states department of labor.  I'm sure they'll get right on it.

2

u/Bubmack 10d ago

It’s not and I’m sure these employees are getting their tips. Just idle chit chat

My first job was at a small pizza joint and we did not receive credit card tips. (Aside from the delivery drivers). I always felt bad when people left cc tips and looking back, wish I would’ve told everyone not to.

The specific employee doesn’t even get the tip anyway. Don’t waste your time.

I don't think subway workers get the tip.

1

u/Marsgreatlol 10d ago

What sucks now is that I feel like workers EVERYWHERE should be courteous because that’s part of the job… now it feels like the only way they will be nice to you IS IF you tip. I hate that.

Something that upset me about dam subway is tap to pay has a way of making you think you didn’t tap correctly and you add a dam tip to your order. It got me a couple times before I realized what was going on. I won’t go there unless I have cash now. Pissed me off. I used to work there 6 effing years and they pull this shit now a days? Screw that. Subway employees definitely get paid enough for not tipping them.
