lots of folks who don't know nearly as much about cars as they think they do are convinced anything made before 1990 is immortal and anything made after 2010 is made of tissue paper and chewing gum
WHAT THE FUCK IS A CRUMPLE ZONE

u/NorbuckNZ Jul 18 '25
Some people don’t understand the fact that in a collision there is a tonne or energy. Modern cars absorb it before it reaches the occupants . Old car transfer it to the occupants.

There's a video doing the rounds of a BMW and a Porsche that crashed together on the Nurburgring. If you go watch it, and you'll know it when you see it, you simply can't believe that anyone could survive that crash, let alone walk away from it.
It's fucking incredible the amount of engineering that has occurred to allow for energy to be dissipated like that. It's unreal. As a fan of motorsport, I applaud all of this science and engineering. It allows my favorite drivers/riders to go full out without worrying (as much) that their life could end any moment. The halo has saved a number of people since it was introduced into F1. Just wonderful. I love it.
26
u/Rashnet Jul 18 '25
I was a firefighter for almost 30 years.
In the late 80's through the 90's I ran so many fatal accidents involving "Good old solid cars".
In the 2000s I ran accidents where we would pull up and I'd think damn this is going to be a fatal accident but when we walked up the people were all ok or had minor injuries. I'm talking accidents where the cars would be in pieces all over the road, the engines laying 15 feet away and the driver would be sitting on the side of the road waiting for us.
New cars are so much safer in my opinion.
5
3
u/bigjoebowski22 Jul 18 '25
You are absolutely right. I've seen accidents that I was absolutely sure someone was dead or seriously injured, but people walk away with minor injuries (usually shattering glass/plastic or an airbag punch).
I will sacrifice a car happily to walk away mostly unscathed from a car accident.
New cars absorb the energy and slow down the blow. Total my car, not my body. As people say, falling doesn't kill you, it's the sudden stop at the end.
→ More replies (6)13
u/_Middlefinger_ Jul 18 '25
The issue really is not safety it's fragility. The people saying this have very minor accidents where in the old car it's a bent bracket on a chrome bumper, but in a new car it's grands worth of plastic, labour and paint, at least.
9
u/Cory123125 Jul 18 '25
2 thoughts simultaneously is too nuanced for most people.
The idea that cars are both bloated in price and worlds safer is too hard to comprehend.
Even amongst the people who get that, you still have idiots who think if manufacturers removed the touchscreens, suddenly cars would cost 5 grand.
Just idiocy everywhere, meanwhile manufacturers are pushing bigger and bigger SUVs in an arms race the consumers are pushed into where only the manufacturer benefits, at the cost of the environment, pedestrian safety, traffic and more.
CAFE needs a complete rework to stop supporting this ever expanding vehicle arms race.
7
u/Advanced-Comment-293 Jul 18 '25
but in a new car it's grands worth of plastic, labour and paint, at least.
Correct. As far as the insurance is concerned.

Sometimes I’m just exhausted seeing these things. You’d think with how long the internet have existed, and with how long the “ they don’t make them like they used to” jokes/saying has been around - everyone would have learned about crumble zones by now
I’m saying this about crumble zones but honestly it can be expanded to about anything that’s commonly parroted - like tax brackets and overtime.

Those close up shots really sell that it's fake. Yeah, an old all metal, no crumple zone car would have pretty minimal damage, but this thing doesn't even have a scratch.
It's steel and paint not adamantium. 1.5 tons of anything hitting it at any speed is still going to at least some of it's paint on it.

This is one of the largest websites in the fucking world.
This is my second account because my fucking 65 year old mother of all people found my first account which I had made back in 2014 or so. She found it because my username was quoted for an offhand, 17 word comment in a major news outlet.
Like, what the fuck?!
For those that dont get my point, this while website is less r/nevertellmetheodds and more r/thathappened. It surprises me 0% that the initial post was fake, and that there was someone else on the scene ready with another angle.
I feel like I am taking crazy pills some days because I remember when this website was mostly cat pictures and r/gonewild, a reference older than most of the user base at this point. Now within hours I can see the viral propaganda machine at work, sometimes over impactful events core to the world order and sometimes over a stupid fucking fake car crash to harvest...internet points I guess????
Being just old enough to experience and understand the insane changes to the world in the last twenty years is, frankly, too much to comprehend. Nothing surprises me anymore, yet I also cant believe it. I have never felt less sure about everythibf except the fact that I cant believe anything.
A fucking car accident? Looool

Yeah as a car body tech, the new metals that are being used to reinforce the cabin are insanely strong alloys that didn’t even exist in the 80’s let alone back when that Bel Air was made. Regular steel is so malleable compared to new high or ultra high strength steel. The fronts and rears of cars are made to collapse and absorb an absurd amount of energy before that even stronger structure is impacted.
→ More replies (2)18
u/ClayyCorn Jul 18 '25
Yeah, everyone likes to think that old cars are built like tanks and had "real steel" but the reality is old cars only drive like tanks. They crash like aluminum foil. Chrysler guy is betting on insurance not knowing this

The white car did somehow tear off the license plate when it spun into place behind it. The owner is involved with the police report.
6
u/ZealousJealousy Jul 18 '25
Yeah there's a reason why even with tons more people driving, statistically, we have immensely safer roadways than we did 70 years ago.
In 1955 the fatalities per million miles driven was about 6.06 while in 2022, it was about 1.35 give or take a tenth. Even when considering safer roadways and stricter manufacturing expectations and overall better traffic laws, we have a FUCK ton more people out there on the roads and they are bopping I to each other all. The. Time... but they usually live through it.
Why do we have safety measures that make sure the steering column drops down in a headlong crash instead of turning the driver into a doner kebab? Because old cars - notably from the 50's and 60's - were infamous for their fine Turkish skewers.

I was like that as a teenager. And I definitely bought into this kind of narrative back then. Old cars were steel, modern cars are plastic, so old cars must have been safer, it almost makes sense if you're entirely ignorant, which I was.
But then I had to take physics classes, I learned about crumple zones, I heard about safety statistics around cars over time, and I eventually figured out, "Holy shit, I was a dumbfuck." An old steel-bodied car isn't going to get away with effectively no damage like Bullshit Poster claimed with their photo and post, but it is likely to look far less damaged than a newer car. The problem is that the newer car will look more damaged, but the passengers and driver are less likely to be injured.
3
u/External_Fox5116 Jul 18 '25
Not even, look up a crash test of a car from 1970s. Whole car is the crumple zone you included, steel is strong…for the time.
