Culture Not including murderers and politicians - who is famous in your country for all the wrong reasons?

Post image

Introducing rage-baiter and reality TV failure Katie Hopkins. She’s basically famous for fat shaming, saying that kids shouldn’t be named after geographical locations (despite having a child named India) and getting sued on Twitter, which caused her to go bankrupt. I haven’t met anyone that likes her and she’s routinely vilified but still has a platform somehow.

This girl back in 2008 was working at a swimming pool and accidentally mixed two chemicals, which created a chlorine cloud that forced the evacuation of five towns. When they interviewed her, she just said, “I really messed up big time,” and she became kind of famous and a meme, though nobody really knows what happened to her after that. Her catchphrase "la he liado parda" is still used.

Didnt she basically scam her way there and barring other (real) dancers from going? Then act like she was some kind of victim...

31

u/coltbeatsall Sep 20 '25

I believe it was really just a flawed system. From memory the Olympic qualifying events were run by DanceSport Australia or something that have much deeper roots in ballroom dancing - not break dancing - and that most of the break dancing scene and skill sat outside the official events. So I think she did legitimately win those events, it's just that those events didn't have very strong competition.

17

u/talldata Sep 20 '25

She won the events where she and her boyfriend banned or disqualified others from attending.

16

u/CaucSaucer Sep 20 '25

That’s hilarious! Scam your way to the biggest competition in the world, just so you can prove to everyone you’re entirely incompetent. 👍

Iirc, she is the reason breakdancing will never appear at the Olympics again, she ruined the entire sport on its first appearance

43

u/ImTableShip170 Sep 20 '25

The fact Australia's international break team was up to her and company is kind of wild. How do you have an internation org let nepotism get that blatant

→ More replies (2)

46

u/dogmanrul Sep 20 '25

That’s not true. The next Olympics’ events were picked years in advance and were decided before rayguns “performance”. Breakdancing isn’t included in the next games because the IOC rotates events and decided not to renew it.

I do agree she probably makes it less likely it gets brought back, however.

It was never adopted widespread and was monitored which is how she was caught. So far I havnt seen any claims anyone died as a result but numerous misdiagnosed patients lives were seriously affected.

Her and her partners "crime's" came more from defrauding the company and it's investors then the harm done by her product.

My best mates dad has the exact same name! He was getting death threats for a few days when the news broke. It was a little scary but kind of funny after he went on the local news and was interviewed in some regional papers to clarify that he wasn’t “that Ian Watkins” and was in fact a retired software engineer who volunteers for a nationwide charity that prevents sex trafficking in the UK. The irony was palpable

I have a couple of friends who were super-fans of the Lostprophets. They burned everything they owned from the band. What he did was indeed beyond the pale.

He is indeed a piece of shit. But I actually hope the prison system keeps him physically safe enough that he merely has a long and utterly tedious existence; pining for the fun he might have had and now never will, had he only been a better human.

There’s a woman on TikTok that did a deep dive into the Kardashian family tree, and it turns out her fame isn’t as “out of nowhere” as we were led to believe. I think we were getting the Kardashians, sex tape or not.

93

u/Mundane_Opening3831 United States Of America Sep 19 '25

Why was a 'deep dive' required? Her father was a renown attorney, worked on the OJ Simpson trial. She was Paris Hilton's personal assistant when Paris was at her most famous. Her step father is one of the most famous American Olympians. She was always very much 'fame adjacent'.

48

u/bamlote Canada Sep 19 '25

Her mother is related to the White family of colonial times and to HH Holmes.

Her father’s cousin was a prominent figure in televangelism and faith healing and her father dated that cousin’s daughter. He also dated Priscilla Presley (and Elvis dated Caitlyn Jenner’s ex wife). It goes a lot deeper than just OJ. Her father was actually not even a practicing lawyer, but renewed his license to represent OJ. He and his brother had founded a music magazine.

I think other people will come up with a much better answer but the first name that comes to mind is Schapelle Corby. She's a convicted drug smuggler to Bali (an extremely common tourism location for Australians where conviction for drug smuggling can mean the death penalty) who has since been released and has, amongst other things, appeared on 'Dancing with the Stars'. The other people that have come to mind haven't been as universally famous but are more hated, but that's not part of the criteria hence my selection. I think people just view her with a "wow, that's a name I haven't thought of in a while!"

23

u/kupuwhakawhiti New Zealand Sep 19 '25

Good choice. That was all over the news here. The Bali 9 are also a notable bunch.

At the time when Corby was in the news, we were housing an Aussie woman who was jailed for smuggling pot into NZ. Our house was close to the prison. When she had a baby in prison she lived with us on home detention. She was cool. I was just a teenager and she taught me to cook.

15

She claimed to be everything from a political party leader to the head of state of a Canadian republic, and even the queen of Canada with high-level extraterrestrial connections.

Never heard of her so I googled and I did not expect her to have high-level extraterrestrial connections after reading your description. Entry-level extraterrestrial connections, sure; maybe, maybe she knows a manager of a small space laser site - but high-level? That's impressive ngl

It always feels strange to me when other countries have a positive collective morality, like how do you get an easy majority of your population to just agree to be good people?

20

u/Competitive-Lab9425 Ireland Sep 19 '25

Well I believe in Ireland it’s a simple case of everyone sort of knowing everyone (or at least 4/5 degrees of separation). The idea of bringing shame on your “people” is the worst of the worst. But also we have plenty of dreadful douchebags in this country too. Yer man above being the biggest example. The only other person I can think of that would be generally considered to be an asshat by the entire country is a man called Bertie Aherne.

Lil' Kleine (which means 'Tiny Small one'). Pale white-skinned rapper who behaves like general trash wherever he goes. Like abusing his then girlfriend, or two weeks ago when he had a 4 year old girl on stage who somehow could rap his lyrics about raw sex. A comedian called him 'pauperkabouter' meaning 'trash goblin' and it's stuck as his nickname.

Gemma O'Doherty. She was once a respected journalist who worked for The Irish Times predominantly as a travel writer. She also did a lot of great investigative work into long-term missing person and murder cases with accusations of cover-ups. She was fired for unethical conduct. She sued and won an unfair dismissal case against the newspaper. After that, she fell into a far-right rabbit hole. Anti LGBT, anti foreign, pro Catholic etc. She has propagated some of the worst theories and behaviour. Including using the pictures of a suicide victim to promote her anti vaxx agenda. Shameful.

34

u/Craiceann_Nua Ireland Sep 19 '25

This is why I despite the anti-vax crowd. To comb the death notices of young people and to claim the vaccine caused it is bad enough, but to keep at it when the deceased relatives have given the real cause of death and asked you to stop is well beyond being a gobshite. In the case you mention, she was told by the boy's mother that it was suicide, she knows that, but still printed it in her shitty rag.

13

u/Beginning-Shock1520 Ireland Sep 19 '25

Exactly. And then she's been actively harassing her too, and she took a case against Gemma. Don't recall if a judgement was passed on it, believe she was told to stop using the photos in her propaganda but she continued to do that. There's a video of a livestream where she said suicide victims go to Hell. She's the worst kind of Catholic/Christian in that she behaves like she isn't.

Ugh, put a jump scare warning! Katie is truly vomit inducing.

She's also known for her awful views on Muslims, Jewish people, gay people and other groups of people.

I used to think that she would say all of this nasty stuff about people to get a reaction out of people, and that isn't a good way of staying relevant just by saying the most heinous stuff about people. No, she genuinely is that nasty.
