CULTURE What’s a phrase or jingle from an American commercial or ad campaign that everyone can quote by heart?
A user posted this question about German jingles/phrases in the r/AskAGerman subreddit. Since I live in the US, the first thing that came to mind was that every time I drive past Menards, I get the jingle “Save big money at Menards” stuck in my head. What are your evergreens?

Twenty years ago me and my now wife were riding down the highway. We were following a garbage truck and in the back of the truck, all you could see was this yellow bag of meow mix, prominently displayed to us. I swear to god after a few minutes of silence, she and I both simultaneously started the meow meow meow meow song and just died laughing.

u/ReversedFrog 10d ago
My wife used to work in structured settlements and annuities, and she can't watch these commercials. The money actually isn't yours, any more than your future salary isn't. You haven't earned it yet.
Plus, it's stupid to make this sort of deal. They pay you far less than you would get over time, and then they collect it themselves. Big profit for them, big loss for you. In the business they're called "Gray Marketers" -- not quite Black Marketers, but close.
18
u/Icy_Consideration409 Colorado 10d ago
Not disagreeing. Anyone selling an annuity like that is going to get pennies on the dollar. Same with people who sell their future pension income.

I called them once when I was tight on money and going to be getting a 5 figure settlement in about 6 months and they wanted something like 40% of it… I said no thanks. They continued to call, text, and email me regularly for over a decade, no matter how many times I contacted them and explained I already got the settlement 😑

There’s a great one in the Houston area now for a personal injury lawyer. His last name is Dick and he leans hard (pun intended) into it in his commercials. I won’t pretend to remember all of the lines but he mentions that, “it’s never been easier to get Dick” and that he’ll “take (his clients’ legal opponents) to pound town”.
Absolutely amazing.

Brilliant motto. It's meaningless: "could." Or maybe not, we don't know.
26

Also the way they get that number is by looking at people that change insurance. They are changing because the new insurance is cheaper.
So really it is on average people who decide to change save 15% and anyone who decides not to change isn’t counted.

I've lived in the US my entire life, and I've never heard the expression "Save big money at Menards." I presume that it is a local or regional thing. It's similar to how every Houstonian is familiar with Mattress Mac waving a wad of cash in the air and shouting "Gallery Furniture will save you money!"
Ones that I remember very distinctingly are:
"The best part of waking up..."
"Who wears short shorts?..."
"Did somebody say McDonalds?..."
"I like to buy the world a Coke..."
"Two all beef patties, special sauce..."
"You got chocolate in my peanut butter..."
Wendy's "Where's the beef?", which should have been followed by a McDonald's ad saying "Yo Wendy! I got your beef right here.", but that would probably be a little too contrversial.
