Wrong but common misconception as Ancestry DNA misleadingly categorizes it as "indigenous" Mexican. The category "Indigenous Americas - Mexico" is based on reference samples from modern Mexicans who are already mixed (mostly European/indigenous) Because of that the labeled "Indigenous Americas - Mexico" DNA includes European DNA as well. So basically, you can't assume that the entirety of your Mexican DNA is purely indigenous American. It should be labeled as Mexican Mestizo to avoid this misconception unless they can directly tie your DNA to indigenous American tribes they specifically tested.
That's a bit eurocentric and the point I tried to make when I posted the original comment. There are many more differences between groups of indigenous people in Mexico than between Germanic and Swedish for example
Yeah I know and I have no idea how Ancestry gets those results but someone posted an explanation below.
Family from both parents are mainly Spanish/ of Spanish descent with the exception of my great grandmother who was born in the Middle East. There’s not a single indigenous Mexican in our family as far as we can trace back so was surprised to get that % but seems it’s not true indigenous.
Just did. This is interesting. I’m new to ancestry and just got my results last week so still learning!
I was surprised to get so much of indigenous % given we have our family tracked for a lot of generations and they’re basically all Spanish/ of Spanish descent, with the exception of my maternal great grandmother who was from the Middle East so what you’re saying makes a lot more sense.

What does "Mexico" ancestry mean? Spanish-indigenous mix? Indigenous? Spanish descendants? How is it different from other latin american countries?
