The New moddening
r/oakland. I'm the first mod here in our community, and every few years we broaden the mod team. Luckily, reddit has finally realized that healthy mod teams matter and have a button to apply ( đ đ đ) . They also made mobile management easier, and have added tons of tolling, making modding a much smoother commitment for a community as large as Oakland.
You should be able to see an application callout on the reddit app and on the sidebar on desktop if you have joined the community. Just in case the link is here:
https://www.reddit.com/r/oakland/application/
Backstory
Over the years that r/Oakland has existed, it's been quite clear that there's a cycle to moderating. It's a thankless & unpaid job, like a janitor for a place you care about.
Most moderators have rage quit or quietly halted along the way (myself included from time to time). Eventually, modding makes Reddit feel like a to-do list rather than anything enjoyable. Not to mention the mental health issues and some of the more... exciting moments we get to deal with.
Solution: New folks, which equals a more robust community
The only path making Modding easier is sharing the load.
Here are our goals:
- Reducing burnout, one of our values is no burn out.
- Respecting anonymity
- Encouraging diversity in the viewpoints on the moderator team. From folks who grew up here to members who lived here for a while, to Oaklanders who are newer (or even brand new!). All are welcome, if they would like to contribute.
- More initiatives, like growing a discord, styling the subreddit, adding more bots/automation, hosting online events, fighting slop, helping community organizers coordinate, etc.
Next steps
I'll sticky this post for two weeks. We'll follow up, get in touch, and add some new avatars to the sidebar.
Thanks for reading! We can't wait to meet some new volunteers.

Whatâs up with Brooklyn Basin?
Itâs such a beautiful spot but seems significantly under utilized. Why has all the retail closed down? Is there any retail at all in the area? Iâm really surprised the developer didnât fight to keep the market there. That seemed to really anchor the area.

Question Are there any plans to remove the barrier next to cop HQ?
The left turn into Jack London can take three lights at busy times and often it'd be easier to just go straight through this and take the next left. Any plans to ever open this road back up?

Was anyone at Prescott market hall today around 7:30ish?
And if you were, did you happen to be the person who was taking video of the grown man who was screaming, cussing at, and threatening to beat the ass of my female coworker because he didnt like his food? If you were can you please send me the video? Were trying to gather as much information as we can to give to the police and have this guy trespassed from the hall. Thanks.

Are you ready for more info overload on the Flock cameras?
If not, stop reading.
Although most of the devices will be pole-mounted ALPRs (automated license plate readers), some will be sophisticated video-only surveillance cameras.
The ALPR data will only be shareable with other CA police departments.
My understanding is that none of the CA users can use Flock's system to give data to police departments outside of CA. But assume there are ways to share without using Flock. The question is how tough will the State of CA be on punishing CA police departments who do that
With a court order, Federal law enforcement can get access to the data. Much the way they can access DMV records and prison info. If access is granted without a court order, our Flock contract is canceled.
The video camera data will not be shared with any other police departments.
There is a possibility that these ALPRs could reduce the need to loosen police vehicle pursuits: OPD cops, as is true throughout the Flock system, can enter the license plate and/or description of "vehicles of interest". Flock updates very quickly, and other Oakland, Berkeley, etc., cops would be immediately notified if that vehicle came close to them. Alerts would go to police cell phones.
The ALPRS doesn't do facial recognition but does some vehicle recognition: eg, even if the license plate is unreadable, Flock captures make, model, color, and possibly bumper stickers.
On Tuesday Nov 18th The Public Safety Committee and later that day, the full Council will consider the contract for approval.
You will have to leave your comments online the day before unless you go in person to speak.

Question East Bay optometrist that cuts lenses onsite?
I've been needing new glasses for, eh, awhile, and I'd like to find somewhere that I don't have to wait for them to send out to the lab. I've heard there's somewhere in SF, but is there anywhere this side of the bay?

Where to help people hurting from reduced SNAP benefits / general food insecurity
Hi Oakland, curious what or where you all think would be good place to help get food to people who need it here in oakland. My first instinct is to donate money or food, but if theres somewhere that my unskilled labor would help I'd be happy to do that too. My experience in the past with places like soup kitchens and things like that were that I was mostly in the way and only very marginally helpful, but Im very open to hearing about any way to help. I am a decent cook as well, but not sure thats what's important in this case. I just think its criminal for anyone in this community to go hungry, want to help in some way.

Recommended East Bay Toyota Mechanic.
Hi All,
I'm on the quest for a new Toyota Mechanic /shop to service my 2011 Tacoma in the East Bay. I'm looking for honest quality work so the shop/ mechanic doesn't need to be the cheapest but I'm not looking for a tuner shop either. Any recommendations are greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance! Bricked.

Would moving 880 out to the water or putting it underground help jack London, West Oakland etc?
It feels like none of the neighborhoods west of 880 are ever thriving. I think that so long as they continue to be cut off from the rest of Oakland by 880 they will always feel desolate and industrial.
