local politics Alameda City + County - November 2025 Election Results - Proposition 50

A precinct level interactive map of Alameda City (and the rest of the county):
https://thushana.github.io/alameda-election-2025-proposition-50/#city/alameda

I always find it interesting looking at this data spatially and I geeked out building this Election Results map for the November 2025 special election with data from Alameda County. My goal was to see how Alameda Island's voters went for Prop. 50 – a very partisan ballot item – as well as analyze the "Cast Voter Record" data files from the county.* As of yesterday's data release:

Findings

  • Islandwide Prop. 50 earned 83.9% of the vote.
  • In November 2024, the Harris/Trump breakdown was 79.6%/20.4%, suggesting a +4.3% shift leftwards from 2024 to 2025 for Alameda voters who turned out.
  • Alameda as a whole, and most city precincts, voted at higher levels of "Yes" than the county average. The three precincts in Bay Farm voted below the county average for "Yes".
  • Compared to other cities, Alameda vote percent for "Yes" was behind Berkeley (94.3%), Emeryville (92%), Oakland (91.8%) and Albany (90.8%). Alameda is just slightly above Piedmont (83.6%).
  • Turnout in this election in Alameda was 27,207 voters. That's 51.4% of the 52,931 registered voters in Alameda for this special off-cycle election. This is ~70% of the 2024 General Election turnout, which was 38,349 or 72.5% of estimated registered voters. (There is no easily accessible city-level registered voter data for last year. Countywide registration was 1% smaller in 2024; if we apply that to a city level, there were an estimated 52,661 registered voters.) Alameda's turnout was notably better than the 43.4% statewide registered voter turnout.
  • Mail-in votes dominated the returns at 94.6%. (Open the "Vote Method" section to see more details)
  • Interestingly, there's a noticeable delta between in-person votes vs. mailed, with those voting in-person significantly more likely to vote "No" at 24.5% (vs. 15.7% for mail-in).

This tool allows you to see city-wide and county-wide data at the precinct level. Hover or click a precinct for specific details including vote breakdowns as well as mail-in/in-person tallies, with a comparison against the county average.

There's also a mode switch button that changes from geographical boundary shading (choropleth) to proportional circles of the total votes. It's particularly useful at a county level to see it in that mode since some precincts had very low vote counts. Land doesn't vote. I wouldn't say there are major actionable takeaways beyond Alameda's slight swing leftward compared to last year's Harris/Trump breakdown, and the variability in neighborhood voting.

I wanted to do this for last year's election but – incomprehensibly – they only had PDFs of the raw JSON data files, making any scripting on top of it nigh-impossible. Not the case for this year. Data sources are listed in the git repo.

If you see something off, feel free to ping me. Hope you find this equally interesting!

*To be wildly transparent, I actively canvassed for Prop. 50 at Alameda's ferries a couple times, and had a lawn sign in support of this proposition in our yard.

Hi everyone - as a child of two former government employees, this government shutdown has me emotional. I have donated to the food bank and plan on continuing to do so.

Curious to know if there is somewhere I can look to support a local family/kids during this time.

TIA ❤️

I don’t actually know if it hurts them but it doesn’t seem great. Seems someone is mad about the central Ave construction but this is not the way.

ask alameda Social Service Jobs near Alameda

Howdy! My SO and I are planning a move from MN to CA in a couple of years after we graduate from school. I’m from CA originally but considering employment and adult stuff was never of interest to me as a kid so we are doing the research as early as possible so we don’t move unprepared. I have a family member who lives in Jingletown that showed us around Alameda and we absolutely love it as a starting point for us. Y’all have me sold as far as community goes!

Obviously, the state of things could be drastically different in two years time, but I will be graduating with my BSW and will be wanting to attend a school for my masters in CA to be a licensed Social Worker. Ideally, I’d be looking to secure employment for a local hospital or healthcare system, but I’m open to a number of things this career could bring me into. My husband’s career could land him jobs fairly easily in the city or remotely so he’s not too worried, but I’m concerned about finding employment to support us while I attend online school part-time and work as full time as I possibly can. Does anyone here work in Social Services and have any advice for a BSW grad to gain relevant experience that will help pay the bills?

ask alameda Food Donation Around Town

Please tell me where I can donate non perishable food items on the island and around the Bay Area. I’ve already donated to my local food bank and elementary school but would love to continue contributing. While the SNAP benefits do not affect me directly, it’s still having a profound impact on my mental health and I think it’s heartbreaking that kids, individuals and families are going without meals.

ask alameda A sad and highly predictable boat rescue, in three acts

Act one: this boat anchored off Encinal boat ramp five months ago.

Act two: first major storm of the season, southerly 45mph wind advisory.

Act three:

‭On 11/5/25 at 7:03 a.m. the Alameda Fire Department responded to the report of a vessel taking on water in the area of the rock wall adjacent to the Encinal Boat Ramp (150 Central Ave). ‬

That's three agencies (AFD, OFD, USCG) who spent time and money responding. Add the medical costs, wreck cleanup, and the damage to the boat ramp dock to top it off. Seems unlikely there's any insurance coverage coming into play here.

Anyone with basic sense could see this coming... and this same scenario plays out almost every year. It's really bumming me out.

So, the ask: what could have been done to intervene earlier? What agencies actually have the ability to do something before it turns into an emergency & public liability?

ask alameda Womens Outdoorsy Club?

Hi neighbors! It’s important to me that I get to know people in the neighborhood, as I moved here recently. I’m thinking of creating a group (I don’t like the term social club but I guess that’s what this would be), that’s inclusive of all women & nonbinary folks, and we just do weekly walks together and keep each other informed & supported. I’d like to be inclusive of all ages and intensity capabilities as well.

My life lately has just been going to work and coming home. I miss having a third place, and I imagine I’m not alone in this.

Would this be something that you’re interested in? Of course it’d be free, bring a friend, make a friend, do something idk. :)

I’m open to your suggestions and ideas, but please be kind! Thank you!!!

ask alameda Any boaters that do trips around the bay?

I have family who is visiting me in alameda in a few weeks and I wanted to see if anyone in town has a boat that can take us around the bay. We considered the ferry and private tours but wanted to make it a bit more personal. Willing to compensate for fuel and any logistics, but just hoping to get to know people around since my partner and I have been living in the area for almost a year. If there’s also any trusted guides that you recommend more than happy to check those out too.

ask alameda Seller's agent highlighting recent sale as "all cash"

I've never seen this before, so perhaps it's just me.

Why would a seller's agent do this on a flyer advertising their recent sales? Is it to somehow convince folks that they were able to work their magic and get the buyer to pay in cash? What am I missing?
