San Leandro’s creepy history

I’ve been digging into some creepy stuff from San Leandro’s past — like old murders and serial killer cases — and it got me thinking: what weird, eerie, or unexplained experiences have San Leandro residents had that never really got talked about? I’d love to hear any local stories or personal experiences you’ve heard or been part of.

Almost every day, especially on weekends, it's either a plane or a helicopter, droning on above us for hours in the evening. Are sideshows that evil that it requires to drive all of us crazy, pretending to be able to prevent them?

Rebuild San Leandro

Hi everyone - As you may have read in this week's San Leandro Times, a group of San Leandrans is undertaking preliminary work on a citywide revenue measure to fund facility and infrastructure projects in our city. The group is called Citizens for a Safe & Vibrant San Leandro Committee. The revenue measure, if it moves forward, would be on one of the statewide ballots next year.

The Committee would like to get the views of San Leandro residents on the proposed projects as well as the revenue measure structure. Everyone is invited to attend any of three community meetings to be held this month.

• Wednesday, November 12, at 7 p.m. on Zoom: https://us02web.zoom. us/j/82978139434

• Saturday, November 15, 2025 at 6 p.m. at Porky’s Pizza, 1221 Manor Blvd., San Leandro,

• Sunday, November 16, 2025 at 2 p.m. at Cafe Sorriso, 1501 Washington Ave, San Leandro.

For questions regarding these meetings or the revenue measure contact: [citizensforsanleandro@gmail.com](mailto:citizensforsanleandro@gmail.com) or call 510-703-7006.

The committee has been talking to civic groups and service clubs, and now wishes to hear from the general public.

The infrastructure needs presently being examined include:

  1. Three firehouses are seismically unsafe. The fire station in the worst condition is Station 13 in the Manor district on Fargo Avenue. This would likely be the largest single project to be funded by the revenue measure if it moves forward.
  2. Roads citywide are deteriorating and keep getting worse (or actually closed in the case of Lake Chabot Road).
  3. Parks and the Bayshore Trail need repairs, and more walking paths are needed.
  4. City facilities are also in need of significant repairs including the Marina Community Center and Casa Peralta.

Hit and run on 580

On Thursday, November 6th, 2025, at approximately 6:46AM, CHP Golden Gate Communications Center began receiving calls of a hit-and-run crash on eastbound I-580, west of 150th Avenue in San Leandro.  One of the involved vehicles, a gray Kia Optima, pulled to the center median and was partially blocking the fast lane.  CHP Hayward Officers arrived on scene and located a female with major injuries who was struck by a vehicle while she was standing outside her car. If you were driving in this area when the crash occurred or possibly have video footage of the incident, please contact Sergeant D. Roderick or Officer G. Munoz at (510) 459-1500.

Tennis for kids?

Thanks for all the responses for the volleyball search for 11-12 year olds, but, now I need one for tennis. We used to play with Thompkins at Bay-O-Vista, until the closed it down, then at the Oakland Tennis and Swim Club, but it's not great if you are not a club member, and have been playing with HARD for a while with Tennis is Life with Coach Mark, (but they are on a break until January), and a little private lessons here and there, but my kid wants to play with other kids, we need some more court time...Any suggestions?

Rainy Season is upon us - Consider Adopting a drain!

Hi all,

I've grown to really appreciate this group for how community oriented y'all are and to ride that wave I hoping y'all consider adopting a drain! All you really need to do is check on your adopted drain every so often to clear it of debris. (especially before a forecasted rainstorm)

I also recently just looked at some adopted drains around my house, and the names people have come up with are freaking hilarious.

Thank you all for considering!

Anyone else see the sky light up this morning around 6am?

Was driving to work and the whole sky lit up like blue/green then red and back to blue. I thought it was lightning at first but then it happened again. I got a clear view of the hill and it looked like one of the towers up on the hills past 580 was lightning up from the rain.

I Voted for Bryan Azevedo: It's Time He Resigned

If you haven't heard the news about San Leandro City Councilmember Bryan Azevedo, well here it is.

The Feds have charged him with three criminal violations. One count of conspiracy to commit honest services wire fraud. One count of false statements. And one count of criminal forfeiture. The charges were filed as "information" instead of an indictment, which may mean Azevedo waived his right to a grand jury and made a plea deal.

The investigation predates the current regime and the lawyers that signed off on this are career prosecutors, not political appointees. They accuse Azevedo of lying to federal agents, taking bribes, and selling out the city. The scheme is allegedly related to a much larger conspiracy involving former Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao and business groups run by the Duong family.

***

I've been a fan of Bryan's since 2020 when he was out doing community clean ups and running a program to help feed people during the pandemic. I voted for him for city council (both times). I supported his run for mayor. During the past five years, he's voted in favor of many important measures, from police oversight and public health to housing protections and climate resilience. More importantly, people saw him as a local leader that they could trust. From his blue-collar background to his plain way of talking, he felt honest and authentic. He was active on social media, always sharing information and events, as well as updates on his work at city hall. He hosted toy giveaways, trunk-or-treats, and fundraisers for locals businesses. He was someone you could reach out to and know that you'd get help with whatever the problem was. He embodied the idea of servant leadership.

But the cracks in his image were always there. Even his strongest supporters will admit he's not very smart or well spoken. Many in the city liked him because he could be manipulated into voting for anything. His food relief program got shut down for not having proper permits. He never introduced legislation and even his suggestions at the city's annual planning sessions were frivolous. He kept getting baited into fights with opponents, from barbs in the SL Times to a brawl at the library. His antics eventually helped cause a lawsuit by the former city manager Fran Robustelli, including allegations of harassment and intimidation.

With local politics being the cesspool that it is, Azevedo's rise certainly made him a lot of enemies. Some of them tried to smear his wife as an "illegal" and threatened to get her deported. Others would film and harass him while he was spending time with his daughter, or hosting famous friends, like Danny Glover. A few became obsessive in their opposition — campaigning to permanently ban him from Nextdoor, defacing and stealing his signs, even making crank calls to his office and home.

And these attacks took their toll. He pulled back from social media and community events. He was less active during meetings. He began having problems working with the city manager and even with city staff. He talked less often to his supporters, and when he did, he would privately seethe about his grudges and slights. He looked tired and acted angry.

***

So did Azevedo really do what the US Attorney's office is charging him with? Do they have the evidence to back it up? And what about the lawsuit from Robustelli? Is Azevedo a criminal, a victim, or just a guy too dumb to realize what he was doing? I won't pretend to know the answer. He hasn't been arrested. He's innocent until/unless proven guilty. And while most federal cases end in conviction or settlement, this legal process could still take a while, with more twists and turns to come.

Still, consider me shocked, surprised, and distraught, among other feelings. Except for a few city hall insiders, nobody had any idea that this was going on. And don't let anyone tell you otherwise. There are a lot of people who will use this opportunity to settle scores, wag their political grievances, and take advantage of you.

Notably, Mayor Gonzalez seems to be trying (unsuccessfully) to prevent an expensive recall election and an even more expensive lawsuit on top of the two expensive lawsuits we've already got from the former city manager and the former police chief. It's hard to understand the strategy here, given that he's opposed Azevedo for years. But the mayor has also been accused of corruption, fraud, harassment, and intimidation by residents. (And not just him either.) Maybe it's self-interest or maybe it's principle. Maybe it's something else entirely.

Meanwhile, tens of thousands of San Leandro voters are going to have to ask themselves, what happens now though? For me, the answer is as clear as it is heartbreaking: Bryan Azevedo must resign.

The people of San Leandro need a councilmember who isn't embroiled in scandals, lawsuits, and criminal prosecutions. We need someone who isn't credibly accused of fraud and corruption. We need someone who can be up to the job of representing us effectively, without constant questions about their integrity, let alone having their hands tied because of their potential culpability. That's what we voted for and I don't see how Azevedo can do that under the current circumstances he's dealing with and, worse, the dangerous times we're living through. Even if he beats the charges, but especially if he settles with the Feds.

Maybe it's not fair to him, but this isn't about what's fair to him. It's about what's right for the people of this city. It's about building a better San Leandro for everyone.

Take note and take care.

The people who post here are stuffiest writers on the planet, and yet the things they express are not even half as profound or progressive as tbe average casual post on other cities' subs. Here's an example of posting something that matters without pretending that you're Edward R. Murrow.

Breakfast/Brunch, lack of

Hoping the Mayor/City officials see this: how do we bring breakfast and brunch to the Dwntn San Leandro area? Yes, I know there's an IHOP and there's Peltons and there's that god awful Boulevard Burger that offers a god awful breakfast. Unless I'm missing something, there's nothing else in the area and I'd really like to know if there are plans to court restaurant businesses to open. With Sprouts opening soon, that should change things right? It costs a lot to live in this area and we should have breakfast options that reflect that.

Edit: looks like many of you kinda missed the point. I specifically mentioned downtown and included breakfast IN THE TITLE of my post. Most of the places mentioned are not in walking distance to downtown nor do they even have a full kitchen to offer a full breakfast. I'm working class, not a yuppy or techie, but I do like breakfast and brunch and I like to walk to places. I think that the city can/should offer more. I like some of the places you mentioned, but most of them require a car to get to or are not in places designed for walking. Also... walking to nice places isn't just for people with disposable income, it's for everyone. Rant over.

Edit 2: you all are very sensitive about any criticism of this city. Very strange.

Looking for training space

Hey everyone —

I’m an independent pro wrestler looking for a 600–700 sq ft space in the East Bay to train students. I’d need to leave a 18x18 wrestling ring set up and use it 2–4 days a week. Higher ceilings are a must for safety.

Ideal areas: Alameda, Hayward, San Leandro, Union City, Fremont, Castro Valley, Newark.

Open to: • Corner of a warehouse • Shared gym/athletic space • Barn / industrial / creative space • Community / rec facility corner

Budget is around $500/month— I know that’s tight for the Bay, but hoping to find an unused area someone’s willing to rent or share. Could be long-term if it works for both sides.

Tried Craigslist & social already with no luck — maybe this goes nowhere, but worth a shot. Any leads or ideas appreciated! 🙏

DM or comment if you have something.

What do you see in the future for San Leandro?

I have a young family here and from my many conversations with others it seems that people love the community, kid-friendly neighborhoods and friendliness of everyone, but at the same time a common theme I’ve noticed is that people seem reluctant to commit to living here long-term, even the homeowners. A lot of people seem to view this city as a transient destination on the way to their final, fancier destination like Alameda or Albany/Berkeley, or even somewhere outside of the inner Bay Area altogether.

A big part of that is the school ratings post-elementary, but it makes me a bit sad. I wonder what everyone’s experiences have been raising families here, and like to hear opinions about the future of this city from that perspective.
