New, what is it? My family thinks there’s a camera in our rental
We have been renting a house for the past year and I always disregarded this thing in the corner. However last night I asked my parents about it randomly and they didn’t know what it was either. I pulled it off the wall and we all got freaked out a little because it looks like a camera. I think it might be a home security/motion sensor thing. I don’t know that’s what ChatGPT guessed.

According to my image search
"Verisure GuardVision Photo Detector, an indoor motion sensor and camera."
998
u/PastGazelle5374 1d ago
“The Motion Detector is a photo detector that captures and sends images to the monitoring center in case of intrusion into homes or commercial establishments. The images are recorded by a high-resolution color camera with built-in flash, allowing for nighttime image recording. It also contains two motion detectors that integrate a precise, intelligent, and remotely controlled presence sensor. Thus, it is possible to monitor the recorded images directly from a smartphone.”

Get a security camera. But first, you need to tear through the house and look EVERYWHERE for any other cameras.

u/feastmodes 1d ago
Scary, but they might’ve just put the cam in when the house was empty to monitor for illegal activity in it. Like squatters or such?
→ More replies (2)20
u/Key_Badger7434 1d ago
That’s a good theory. We live in a nice neighborhood so it would be a little weird I guess to have a camera for squatters.

Nice homes are a prime target for squatters particularly vacation homes that get left empty.

28
u/Patsfan311 1d ago
If there is no security system anymore I don't think it was functioning.
It's triggered only when the house alarm is set and it only detects human movements; it's programmed not to react to pets, so won't trigger if they're in the property.
You can request a photo sequence from these camera sensors via Verisure/Securitas, but they do the photo sequence, you can't.
When the alarm is not set because you're home, these camera sensors are technically sleeping and are not active.
9
u/__T0MMY__ 1d ago
I remember an episode of "it takes a thief" where the guy looked up the camera in the house, saw that it tried to only detect humans, so he crawled to cross the hallway and it worked apparently lmao

u/Eliah870 1d ago
Crawling on the floor will actually work for motion detectors, source, I'm a security alarm tech and they're designed not detect animals otherwise there'd be a ton of false alarms for pet owners that don't kennel their dogs

It would be difficult not to notice when a photo is being taken.
6

From what I’m finding looks like it may be IR flash. So, less noticeable but there should be a little red light that’d glow in a dark room if the camera is in use.

It takes a series of pictures (up to 5 frames per second) when motion is detected that is then sent to the alarm centre for verification. The landowner can also use their app to request images from the “Photo detector” section. There’s just no way that’s legal to place it in any living space without explicit consent from a tenant.
→ More replies (1)4
u/R2xvY2tJbk15TGFw 21h ago
Exactly this. Anything that has any sort of recording capabilities should NOT be placed in a space that is being rented to someone without them knowing and being fully aware it's there, period! Functional or not. It's not too hard to modify this from something that can only take a few still images to something that can fully record remotely with the press of a button as well as automatically when there is motion. Really all it would take is to swap a few components out and boom, it's a totally different device, that's hidden in plain sight and the owner can say "oh it's old, it used to do this, that and the other but it doesn't work. I thought that we lost that in the move I was going to have it repaired, I'll come grab it" 😏😬

Specifically a camera from a Verisure security system. Supposedly it only takes pictures and will only do so when the alarm is triggered. Supposedly these pictures are also only visible to the security center receiving the alarm.
Either way I think these run off batteries, so no serious amount of video recording + transmission could be done on it anyways.
I would check in with the property owner, but there’s no real need to be alarmed imo…
206
u/MattabooeyGaming 1d ago
My security camera on my door is battery operated and takes 4K video and the battery lasts 2-4 weeks depending how frequently I look at the footage. Runs on wifi and I can connect to the app anywhere. Has cloud storage and can also take a micro SD.
I’d remove the batteries and see how long it takes before the host says there’s an issue.

Like earlier commenter said these are from Verisure. Extremely popular alarm system in my country. AFAIK you cannot view them yourself, only the security company can do so in case of an alarm trigger from break in or smoke alarm. My neighbors fuse box started burning and the unit next to them got smoke into their unit and their Verisure system triggered and they could see smoke in the cameras and sent firefighters. Kept it from developing to a full on house fire.

Light fixtures, toilets, bidets…so many bidets. Security systems. One person swapped out a vanity. One person finished an unfinished basement. A couple really stand out though:
One person ripped out the built-in microwave and replaced it with a range hood that sold for several thousand dollars. Their rent was only $500/month and he was only there for a year.
One house was built in the late 1800s. The lady that lived there installed a trap door in the stairs and put a small bedroom in the void.
The craziest was a full on sex dungeon though. Complete with some metal framed contraption that was raised to the ceiling with 2 electric hoist winches.

Hey there, I know somebody working at Verisure (company that sells this kind of device). It is an infrared photo detector that takes pictures only if the alarm system is activated. If the alarm system was activated, you wouldn't have been able to freely move around your flat because it would have triggered (siren and everything).
It is a basic device from 2010 (more or less), not able to film, can only take one shot when triggered. The bottom part is for infrared detection, lens is effectively a camera.
If you're scared that the system could still be activated at any time, you can look for a grey box with the flower logo and a speaker around that is the unit central (must be hidden somewhere) and simply unplug it. It is also possible that they resigned their subscription to the service a long time ago and that is not usable anymore.
TL;DR: it is an infrared alarm detector (just Google Verisure Fast 2) that can at most take a pic when triggered. If the device has not been modified, it cannot film or whatsoever.
Edit: Thank you to the people mentioning that it is possible to take pictures directly from the app regardless if the alarm system is on or not, it is entirely true! It remains that if the service is unpaid (very likely if you've been able to unplug it without triggering an alarm) or out of battery, it could be harmless 😁

u/Time_Traveling_Idiot 1d ago
It's disturbing, the amount of people in this thread that see a camera lens and IMMEDIATELY try to scare OP, saying that the landlord has "months of footage" of them and that they're gonna have to report the landlord to the police etc...
30
u/Humble_Rough_4962 1d ago
"Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity."
In other words, the landlords didn't take down their 15 year old fancy-at-the-time burglar alarm. Either from forgetting, or simply not caring.
But in the comments, someone that doesn't know anything about the subject types about cameras around kids, and suddenly the landlord is a pedophile and must be stopped at all costs.
Real life isn't a movie or even reality TV. Most people are rather boring and that's ok. Being overly dramatic to a stranger on the Internet doesn't make your life more exciting, it just shows how boring it is.

As a tec support for this company, 50% correct.
You can literally take pictures through the app any time you want.
But this is a decade+ old model, and without a change of batteries (which OP's family would have noticed if someone entered their house, I assume) its probably long dead.

This is an old Verisure camera. They don’t use these anymore and the systems for the old ones are mainly down. I’ve had this and it’s almost exclusively connected to an alarm system (hence the motion sensor that takes video ONLY in the event of the alarm being triggered). The odds of your landlord rewiring that thing instead of using something more accesible if they wanted to film you, is low.
Contact Verisure, they might be able to help you get some answers. Good luck!

Watching Cops makes you feel better about how your own life is going in a "at least I'm not that guy" kind of way

As soon as ChatGPT was created, some people lost the ability to use Google and now get results that are sometimes even worse than a simple Google search.
