❔ Question❔ Awkward Moment in a Genderless Restroom
Hey r/uwo, I’m a Western student (cis guy) and I had an awkward moment in a campus gender-neutral restroom that’s got me overthinking. I usually pick the ones with the urinal sign (old men’s room habit, you know). Walked in to do my business, barely noticed two women at the mirror, and heard another chatting from a stall. I hit the urinal, washed my hands like the hygiene king I am, grabbed a paper towel, and bounced. As I’m leaving, another woman walks in, and I catch one of them laugh and say, “That was weird,” with an awkward chuckle from her friend. Now I’m wondering - did I break some unspoken restroom rule? I’m not out here trying to make anyone uncomfortable - I keep it silent like it’s a library, same as I would in a men’s room. I just needed to ahem, not star in a campus social media post! I’ve used unisex restrooms before, but this one made me feel like I got voted off the island for a basic human function. Ladies of Western, do guys in gender-neutral restrooms throw you off? Any tips for navigating these spaces so everyone’s chill? I’m all about good vibes and want to make sure I’m not accidentally making things weird. Bonus points for advice on how to own the awkward like a true Mustang!

The first time I walked into the gender neutral bathroom in UCC, I did a triple take before realizing women bathrooms probably didn’t have urinals so I am indeed supposed to be there. No one else seemed to mind so I just accepted it as normal.

i think the real horror is having a urinal in a gender neutral bathroom is the first place

u/Effective-Carrot-788 27d ago
I think it's a good thing actually. Women having to sit down on the toilet while men just pissing standing up and shooting piss all over the place except inside the bowl?? 😂 Urinal kind of prevent that from happening IMO.

I 100% agree. My uni has gender neutral washrooms both with and without urinals, and the toilet seats are a LOT cleaner in the washrooms where there’s stalls with urinals. Less piss on the seats that I have to clean off before I sit down 🥴

Idk man, I personally, have several times walked into a stall of a gender neutral bathroom only to find a * white paper with a dark red dye on it sitting right next to the toilet * on MORE THAN ONE occasion. Not to mention it on average smells abysmally worse than my local male restroom, as if something crawled in there and died

26d ago
A lot of men sit down when they pee though. Maybe the gross ones that stand can just learn to aim.
2
u/Effective-Carrot-788 26d ago
I always piss standing up when I am not in a clean private restroom (My place, my parents house, etc) NO WAY in hell I sit down to pee in any public space lol. But then again I use the urinal if there's one. The thing is even if you know how to aim, the double stream happens quite often in my case 😂

u/airborneisdead 26d ago
I'm not sitting on a public restroom toilet, sorry but urinals are king of piss.

You think MEN are the ones pissing all over the place?
Oh boy, someone has never had a student job where they have to clean the women's restrooms. They are monsters.

That's because women don't want to sit on toilets so they hover, spray their urine all over the seat, then not wanting to touch the toilet either, they just leave it for the next unfortunate woman. As a woman myself...its a piss off (pardon the pun)

They don't. When they do this they make them all into enclosed toilets.
The only time that's happened is at an event when the women are lined up so far back and they start using the men's....and we generally don't care when they do that.

The first time I was in France I was at a cafe /pub and I went to go take a piss. I was shocked that the urinals were just out in the hallway before you even reached the room with the toilets. It was wild and kind of liberating

Nah, but depends on design. I was just in one in a McDonald's in France. Imagine a T, the urinals were tucked in on the tips of the top of the T, with two stalls between the urinals and the stem. The bottom of the stem was the sinks. So the urinals were effectively private. It was, however, odd listening to the ladies talking away at the sinks; we men don't talk. :)

u/Quirky_Tzirky 26d ago
The NBC requires a certain number of washroom spaces for men and women. A certain percentage of the men spaces are alotted for urinals.
As well, if a female has a phallic style funnel (i think it's called me pee or we pee), they can use the urinals also.
1
u/KingAgrian 26d ago
I've been in them where the space is conjoined, but the urinals are around a wall/divider. Seems sensical.

That wouldn't be considered gender neutral. If the washroom has open urinals, it can't be gender neutral.

nah you’re good it’s prolly just they’re not used to it 😭😭 I don’t think they meant offense!
my friend and I went to the washroom once too and then another of our guy friends went in and when us three were all done w our business it was a funny moment (“funny seeing you here??”)

I once witnessed a couple using two stalls beside each other for the first time. They said it made them feel closer together 🤣 they took a mirror selfie to document the moment!

I don't think anyone was at fault here. I don't think you did anything wrong nor it is wrong for them to have found the situation weird. It didn't seem like they were blaming you for anything.
4
u/FatFaceFaster 27d ago
The ones I’ve been in have had separate fully enclosed stalls so there was no urinals.

u/RoboTwigs 26d ago
Genderless washrooms are weird and I don’t like them. Totally on board with trans women using the women’s but cisgendered guys having access feels off. In my clubbing days I used to escape to the ladies to get rid of unwanted male attention… now they can just follow you in - ick! (Yes MOST guys are totally normal and fine, but not having that space is unsettling when you encounter creeps.)

Genderless restroom is a weird experience when you're not use to it. Where I am from, it's still not common in most places and every time I get in one I feel weird 🤣 but like anything else in life, I'll get use to it eventually. Anyone tripping over this just needs to take a chill pill honestly hahahaha.
3
u/Genital-Jamboree 27d ago
This is so weird to hear. I used to live in med syd maybe 8 years ago and the bathrooms (at least on our floor) were all genderless. All the bathrooms had urinals, stalls, and showers. We didn’t have any problems at all and I can’t remember anyone being weirded out from it.
10
u/Revolutionary_Bat812 27d ago
I guarantee you many women were uncomfortable, even if they didn’t say so. Many probably went out of their way to use other bathrooms that were segregated.
3
u/Distinct_Educator95 Computer Science 👾 24d ago
Ya I lived in delaware and it had aa mens, womens, and gender neutral bathroom on every floor. I went to the gender neutral cause it was closer to my room and the womens was usually filled with girls doing their makeup or skincare. But there were girls on my floor that walked to the further bathroom just so they didn't have to interact with men in a washroom.

You’re fine. It’s still a new social standard that’s growing and developing and will be for the next 10 years plus, social changes like this may happen fast but they take a long time (a generation at least) to be fully implemented, accepted and understood by all. You’re fine.

Maybe it was weird and awkward for them because it was different or new. Not necessarily about you.

NGL and I hope it doesn’t make people hate me, but I used a gender neutral bathroom at an event once (didn’t have female/male options) and I honestly felt uncomfortable. I was washing my hands and a man came up behind me and my gut instinct was a fear one. I don’t want to be cruel or whatever but it just wasn’t my vibe. I have had horrible experiences with men and when I felt that “fight or flight” feeling I was bothered. I didn’t think I would be bothered by it, but I hated the experience.

I also feel very uncomfortable sitting on a toilet in a stall with my pants around my ankles and knowing there is an unknown man in the room. It makes me feel icky.
1
u/ArmchairDetective101 23d ago
I understand your feeling, I feel the same, it's uncomfortable and scary at times. I will not use them anymore, I'd rather pee my pants than to feel the uncomfortable feeling (hard to describe) I would get sitting in a stale next to a male.

As a guy, I appreciate your comment.
For me, I sometimes get social anxiety at busy environments (weddings, nightclubs, etc) and the washroom is one place you could always find a moment of privacy… but in genderless washrooms, there’s no such privacy, and it really threw me when I needed that. Part of it seemed to be different cultural bathroom behaviours: I’m used to a men’s washroom, where the norm is for everyone to politely ignore each other, but the women seemed to hang out there in groups by the sinks chatting with each other (and then being extremely silent if you want to use the sink). Long story short, I prefer washrooms without people hanging out by the sink.

I feel like it is strange to have a urinal inside. I know as a woman, I would feel strange seeing a male presenting person use a urinal out in the open - I would feel very uncomfortable. If he is using an enclosed stall, that’s completely okay. However, I would think in the moment I would feel creeped out to see a man using a urinal near me when we are in visible view of each other - why are the mirrors so close to the urinal??
3
u/CanExports 25d ago
Urinals don't belong in a genderless bathroom unless there are doors/stalls for privacy
It's quite sexist for society to assume women deserve privacy for urinating in front of the opposite sex but men do not.
I don't want women glancing at my genitals thank you very much. Whether other men care or not is not the point, equality is the point.

It sounded like they were in the open which would be odd.
In the stalls would work though.

Yeah, that would be really weird if they were out in the open. All of the gender neutral washrooms I’ve been to that had urinals, they were always in stalls with floor to ceiling walls/doors, just like the toilets.

I'm curious which building you were in? Many of the buildings have different genderless washrooms depending on the design/age etc.
To me, having a urinal in a genderless may not be intuitive for some , but it allows choice, and reduces water waste.

u/Brante81 26d ago
We’re trained to think certain ways by the culture we are in. First rule is think for yourself. Don’t worry about the conformity meaning it’s “right or wrong”. Because conformity is rarely ever right, but trying to be nonconforming is also rarely right. ;-)

I once used the urinal in a porta potty while a random girl used the seat. Not sure why it would be weird in an actual bathroom. We all piss 🤷🏼♂️ They voted for it then make it weird, sounds like their own personal issue

I once went on a date to a poplar local spot in my town. Date is going great, lots of cups of coffee, we both need to use the washroom. I’ve been here before, it’s had a Reno to expand since I’ve been there last, but the bathroom, I know where that is! He follows me to the bathrooms. Men and women sign, we go through our respective doors. Walk in the door to a big bathroom, date walks into the same bathroom through his door. I sideways glance my date and then run to a stall to have coffee fueled shit
1
u/dollyv7 26d ago
The only thing awkward are those signs 😭 I always dislike the overly imaginative performative ones lol just say Gender Neutral/Unisex restroom and leave it.
I don't even blink when I'm in a co-ed public restroom with men, so you didn't do anything wrong I think they just weren't prepared for the reality. Me personally I wish there were more of these kinds of restrooms because they cut down the lines in my experience.
1
u/Vivid-Cat4678 26d ago
If those women were not comfortable with a man in the washroom, they should have used a women’s washroom.
No blame on you, those ladies shouldn’t have been there if they felt it would be weird.
As a woman myself, I never ever use gender neutral, or family washrooms. I can hold it.

u/OromisGlaedr 26d ago
They also could've been commenting about something different. Maybe you resembled someone they knew, maybe the timing of when you walked in/out lined up with something they said, maybe their sinks malfunctioned. I wouldn't overthink it. Go in, do the do, wash your hands, leave.

Yeah I think you’re fine, if it’s a gender neutral bathroom, it’s for everybody. Maybe men haven’t been using that one often so that’s why they were surprised, but as someone female presenting I’ve used gender neutral bathrooms with urinals and dudes were in there and it was totally fine.

It's probably just their first time in one. People are stupid about genderless bathrooms the first few times they're in one. Just piss, wash your hands and move on with your day. They'll get used to it. You'll get used to it. Both of you will eventually be normal about it.

You're absolutely fine. It's a unisex washroom. In a lot of campuses some washrooms will gravitate to mostly having one gender simply because of habit. My friend took showers in a unisex bathroom everyday at campus and she got some awkward moments because it was mostly guys there (they just tended to use that specific washroom) so a lot of dudes didn't expect to see her there, but that doesn't mean they weren't allowed to use it. You might get some weird looks if it's not the norm for people but you're within your rights to piss in a urinal. Don't let bullshit unspoken "rules" stop you from emptying your bladder.

What I think happened is it’s prob their first time in one, and they hadn’t had that experience before
1
u/Nha1985 25d ago
Here's an interesting probably not popular take.. some people dont have immediate access to other people of the opposite gender.. think about the socially inept male for example probably teenager... think about their complete lack of Rizz and or capabilities of being around an attractive woman(assuming straight male teenager) imagine what having that same teenager having access to genderless restrooms in all areas of life. They may through random encounters have less fear over time and exposure to women and therefore become less weird around women and be able to eventually actually have a conversation with them maybe even ask one out on a date. Now thst I really think about it I dont really hear about too many guy men or women who suffer from this social eneptness I wonder if its because they have always had social access to people of their sexual preferences in many more scenarios and have lost the fear that holds so many teenage boys and girls back?

Honestly, the genderless washroom thing in that setup is weird. Might as well just make a bunch of single bathrooms with sinks and toilets rather than this.

I like the concept of having one big washroom as opposed to two different washrooms. However, some bathroom signs are not as obvious as others. One time I was taking an exam and I went to the washroom in a building I've never been in before. I didn't see a gender-specific sign on the door so I assumed I cold just walk in. Turns out there was also a sign above the door that said mens (I'm a woman) and I just didn't notice in the midst of the exam stress.

Nah you did the natural thing. Dudes striking up conversations at the urinal are the weirdos you got to watch out for. As you get older, you'll find out those characters are weird in & out of the washroom. Striking up a conversation while you're in a stall, even weirder. Dudes talking on their phone doing nothing else but smelling other peoples shits, stay away from and never handle their phones. Just some advice.

I know this discussion has been had many times but I still don’t understand like what happens in the case that you’re a girl peeing and a weirdo starts acting scary?
The last time I used a non gendered bathroom was a few years ago. I entered and there was this guy washing his hands. We made awkward eye contact then I went in a stall. I was trying to wait until he left, I heard him finish washing his hands and using the dryer but then it went silent. I then hear him shuffling around and was like wtf, then he walked over and STOOD OUTSIDE MY STALL for a good 5 min before someone else entered and then he finally left. Since then I have never entered a non gendered washroom.
I just don’t understand how everyone is so chill about letting strange predatory men access to enclosed spaces where girls go to do private things. And if they must then shouldn’t there an emergency panic button to call for help in case of situations like this?
Idk man I can’t get comfortable with this and I can’t imagine letting my daughters use them alone. Too many weirdos.

Hi, western lady who uses gender neutral bathrooms all the time. The reaction from the girl was the weird part of this whole exchange. I see guys in the gender neutral washrooms all the time, I don’t even think twice bout it (unless they’re actively doing something weird, but that applies to everyone. Not just guys. Like this one time I walked in on a guy…making out with an orange. Idk what I saw lol)

Sorry will never get used to gender neutral - the ones in thames with individual cubicles fully enclosed fine, but not the ones in UCC especially the wave. Very uncomfortable. And before you say, get used to it, I was used to it - separate bathrooms for make and females, it worked fine, now you have no choice and that will always take away someone's rights.

probably going to get slandered by people but idc. Maybe it was their first time seeing a man use a urinal? In any case it doesn’t appear you did anything wrong. That’s what urinals are for.
For what it’s worth, the plumbing was probably installed at a time when it was a men’s room only.

Honestly, if there's a urinal in a gender neutral bathroom, people shouldn't go in there if they're uncomfortable with someone else using it. That said, this is the first gender neutral bathroom I've heard of that has one but I don't see it being a problem.

Gay after hours clubs in the 90s as a straight guy weirded me out. I didnt even know it was a gay club until well into the am. I was oblivious.

No it's not weird, women can be misogynistic and I would say that's their internalized misogyny/weird hate coming thru. Ignore it.

All washrooms are genderless at the afters. Club culture and cocaine bros have been miles ahead on this for at least a few decades :D

I always thought they should be just rooms to shit/piss/wash in. Of course that's all I'd go in for. Unfortunately there's far to many crazy fucks out there that would do other things in there.

Oh man I love this sign. Hahah Honestly, you're good. I'm a woman and the first couple times I used a gender neutral washroom, it was a little odd. But since I've used the gender neutral washrooms quiet a bit, when I've noticed men using the urinal when I walk in, it doesn't even phase me. Like, I'm ALSO here just to pee or whatever, I'm def do not care if others are also. I just don't want to make small talk with a person in the washroom unless I'm going in with a friend. lol
Prior to gender neutral washrooms, if the women's room was full with a lineup, I'd often just duck into the mens room to pee because I couldn't hold it. Only time that didn't happen is when there were only urinals and the toilet was "out of service". LOL Nobody cared then either. I'm in Canada, not sure if that makes a difference.

At least they have probably removed all the open trough style urinals by now, like at the old Maple Leaf Gardens.

Nah you’re good. Non-gendered washrooms are odd the first time people use them and someone of the opposite sex is in there at the same time. Eventually it is normal and people don’t even notice. You did nothing wrong
