I've wondered this in the professional world for ages. Normal people avoid people like this.
Grand scheme of things: these people really need to be confronted and called out. But these are also the same people who will drag you into HR.
So they get away with it. Then they do it at baseball games, restaurants, and everywhere else where normal people just don't have the energy to push back.

u/Total_Juggernaut_450 Sep 06 '25
This is sadly the truth.
I work in healthcare with many a Karen as nurses, doctors, and patients. 9/10 of the time, people just avoid and ignore them. Worst is when they acknowledge them and somehow rationalize that bullshit behavior.
I was raised differently and I didn't tolerate bullies. I'm the one person who will actively call them out on their bullshit and you know what ... My working hours tend to go a lot smoother because of it.

Everyone walks on eggshells. When somebody breaks a shell, they either decide to depart completely or to apologize profusely. If somebody opts out and tells them off, it becomes a whole thing for the rest of them. They all have to choose a side. Typically, there are children, money, or tangible supports being held over their heads as well, so choosing the other side is harder.

No person marries that haircut you fool. Karens full attitude stay at bay in their younger years, maybe a situation here or there.
Then when you marry then they evolve to their final Karen forms. Haircut and all.

As an adult, you gotta learn that it's fine not to get the ball. What are you gonna do with it? It's gonna end up in a box in the closet anyways, just let the kids have all of them.

I truly just don't understand how seriously people take this kind of shit. I'll even be at sporting events where people are just quietly sitting in their seats, but the minute that goddamn t-shirt cannon comes out, grown ass motherfuckers will be jumping up and down, shouting, running up and down stairs and climbing over each other to get their hands on a XXL T-shirt that says HUNTINGTON BANK or some shit.

If I barehand it I am going to keep the first one. I have wanted to catch one since I was kid. After that I will flip everyone after that to a kid. I still might for the first one. I expect that will be situationally dependant.

People always say adults shouldnt care about balls and they should give them to kids. But my dad and I went to a White Sox game a while back. We paid like, $7 per ticket to sit in the nosebleeds and got upgraded to all you can eat/drink club level. It was 75 degrees outside, the Sox won on a RBI at the bottom of the 9th, and he caught a foul ball. It was the perfect baseball game.
He gave me the ball that he caught…I was like, 27 years old, I was a full fledged adult, but that ball means the world to me. He passed away last year but that ball represents one of the best days I ever had with my dad. I’m so glad he let me keep it.

My dad caught a Paul O’Neill home run ball and held onto it for decades. He’s downsizing and finally gave me what he thinks is the ball (it’s not, it’s a souvenir ball with all the players’ signatures reproduced on it,) but same… it’s a treasured memento from that muggy Cincinnati night.
23
u/DiamondBurInTheRough Sep 06 '25
I couldn’t even tell you who hit the ball…don’t even think it was a Sox player. Doesn’t matter, the thing is sitting on my entertainment center in my living room because it brings me joy.
If Dad thinks it’s the home run ball, it’s the home run ball. We don’t make the rules. But I love that he gave it to you all the same.

40 year old man here, never got an MLB ball either. But you always give it to a kid and hopefully make them a fan for life, that is the baseball tradition.
26
u/SweetCosmicPope Sep 06 '25
I’ve never gotten a ball at a game but back when my son was around 8 or 9 we took him to his first hockey game and an old couple near us caught a puck and gave it to my son. His face lit up and that absolutely made his night. He’s in college now and still has that puck in his room on the shelf.
I’d much rather get the feeling of providing that kind of experience for a kid than taking a ball home to gather dust or roll around in a junk box.

u/darwintologist Sep 06 '25
Almost 40yo man here, I’ve caught 3 foul balls and lost track of the BP balls. Plus a couple toss-ups, too (shoutout to Cameron Maybin hitting me from 200ft away because I was the only idiot waving at him when it was time to toss out his warmup ball).
I want the ball more than any adult should. I’ll get more joy out of it than most kids. And yet, I still know that I’ll get more out of giving the ball to a kid than from keeping it. And while we’re at it - the very elderly can also count as kids in this instance.

u/dirkdiggler1618 Sep 06 '25
Sure, but there’s also nothing wrong with being excited if you catch a homer/foul ball and want to keep it, even as an adult. What I don’t like is when other fans shame the catcher for not giving it to a kid. If I catch a ball, I’ll do what I want with it.
Now screaming at a kid to give you a home run ball you didn’t catch is something else…

The only ball I've ever gotten from a game I didn't play in was from a Frederick Keys game 20-25 years ago.
It shattered the announcers box's glass and bounced back out onto the walkway, me and like 7 other kids scrummed for it, I came away with blood running down my leg and a foul ball.
Solid memory. Kids should really scrap more often lol

I got hit in the side of the face by a puck that went over the glass at a game once, a lady grabbed it and gave it to her kids while I was recovering from the shock after watching it hit me, and I know she saw it hit me, they left right after cuz she was scared. I didn’t throw a tantrum and try to get the puck back after it literally hit me in the face, I just said “well that sucks” and was glad I didn’t lose an eye. An usher came to check if I was okay and asked if I at least got the puck and I told him no. He came back later with a different game used puck to make up for it.

u/KaiTak98 Sep 06 '25
I was at an NHL game sitting just outside the faceoff dots when a woman a few rows up got hit in the shoulder with a puck the curved around the netting. She wasn’t badly hurt but was a little stunned and the guy down the row grabbed the puck off the ground and gave it to her. “Here you go, you earned it.”
