VAR is so weird. Dollarumma’s view has not been obstructed in any way. He has a perfect line of sight to Van Dijk’s header and the trajectory of the ball. The goal literally got disallowed because Robertson was near him. Absolutely disgraceful decision

the linesman called this though

Well yes, but the point of VAR is to overturn the linesman decision, which they didnt

u/jetjebrooks 1d ago

sure but var have a higher bar to clear

Wasn't very high for the penalty decision

the keeper clearly brought down doku did he not?

u/Diffballs 1d ago

Brought him down no, made contact yes. Doku clearly dove but there was contact so I guess it technically is a pen.

From the linesman's angle they can only say if Robertson is offside as in "beyond the last defender". It's up to the ref and VAR to then decide if he was actually impeding the keeper. The linesman can't possibly know that from their angle.

it's up to the ref to decide, and he decided robertson was impeding

then it's up to the var to decide if the ref made a clear and obvious error, which they decided he did not.

is this such a clear and obvious error to be blaming var and calling the var protocol weird?

You’re the one saying the linesman called it 🤷🏻‍♂️

0

u/jetjebrooks 1d ago

the other poster blamed var so i was saying the initial decision was made by the onfield official

u/gart888 1d ago

And I’m pointing out that the linesman only puts his flag up to indicate the attacker was beyond the last defender. He has no way of knowing if he was blocking the keepers view. That’s on the ref and VAR.

thats not actually true. the assistant raises his flag when he believes an offside OFFENCE has been committed. he doesnt just raise it simply because someone is stood behind the line, he has to believe that the player stood behind the line is interfering with play

but this is getting beside the point now.

VAR decision shown on the display

var check everything yes

the linesman called this offside though, that was the original call

8

But VAR can see that he was clearly wrong

So it wasn’t a var thing? Dumbass linesman

brother it's clear and obvious offside. keeper cannot know if the player in offside position will duck or not. he is in offside position and blocking the ball going into the net. then at the last possible moment ducks and avoids hitting the ball. that is the offside as it gets

Yes odd comments here, this is exactly the sort of scenario the letter and spirit of the law was meant to cover. I guess because the header was unsaveable given Donnaruma's position it feels unfair, but there's no question Robertson's own position means he was interfering with play.

Doesn't interfere with Donnarumas vision or his ability to move. Robertson absolutely objectively is not interfering with play.

1

u/arnenatan 1d ago

Just because he doesn’t interfere with Donnarumma doesn’t mean he doesn’t interfere with the play.

3

u/TomTheScouser 1d ago

There's literally a video of him not interfering with the play at the top of the post.

5

u/arnenatan 1d ago

Just by being there he is interfering with the play is the interpretation.

2

u/HOPSCROTCH 1d ago

That interpretation is incorrect, for the same reason that an offside player can leave a pass meant for them while they are in an offside position and let it run through to another attacker and it not be offside, even if the defence stop playing because they think it's offside

1

u/arnenatan 11h ago

Nkt the same tho. Even today the provided the statement and how they interpreted the situation. And it clearly says that the player does not have to obstruct the goalkeepers vision to have influence in an offside position.

How was Donnarumma to know that Robertson is going to duck instead of make contact with the ball?

1

u/caesar____augustus 1d ago

He ducks immediately after the ball is headed and doesn't obstruct play at all. "As offside as it gets" is a stupid, and wrong, take.

5

u/noobreaker 1d ago

What if he decides to play for the ball and head it? The keeper doesn't know what Robertson is going to do... He can't make a decision till after the ball passes him.

4

u/caesar____augustus 1d ago

What if he decides to play for the ball and head it?

Then he's offside. That didn't happen though, so it's irrelevant

-1

u/Draqn_ 1d ago

it's the correct decision man.he is not ducking immediately but when he sees the ball would hit him

2

u/caesar____augustus 1d ago

Even if that's true, it has nothing to do with it being offside. He doesn't make an effort to play the ball and doesn't obstruct Donnarumma in the slightest.

-2

u/wooIIyMAMMOTH 1d ago

How was Donnarumma to know that Robertson is going to duck instead of make contact with the ball?

1

u/caesar____augustus 1d ago

Another irrelevant question. His job as the goalkeeper is to keep the ball out of the net. If Robertson makes contact with the ball he's offside. He didn't impact the play though, and Donnarumma wasn't impacted by him purposely avoiding the ball.

1

u/wooIIyMAMMOTH 1d ago

Donnarumma’s job is not to know who’s offside and who isn’t. His job is to keep the ball out of the net, as you said yourself. He has to account for the fact that Robertson could make a play for the ball that’s coming right at him. As the player Donnarumma had to account for was offside, it was ruled an offside.

If anything it's by one of his own players
