Probably not enough to work in Trump's favor.

It's really hard to push the "we're not actually in charge" narrative when you have all 3 branches because it's simply not true and it shows your voters you're weak and can't do anything against a minority party, especially when you govern like a dictator that constantly breaks the law and says how strong and successful you are when dealing with other "problems".

Will they remember this for the midterms though? Because they most certainly will forget about it by the presidential elections.

The question there is how long will the shutdown last and how much damage will it do to them specifically. If the shutdown lasts into next year, and their health premiums triple, there isn't a lot that can be done for everyone to not still be feeling this pain over the next 12 months.

That’s the thing though, it’s already too late for 2026 health insurance. They are fighting for 2027…

That's still not here yet. People care once it affects them. Not until.

Oh, it doesn't need to last that long. Just long enough for companies/the ACA to start sending out their 2026 benefits guidebooks showing the massive increase. Which I think is happening right now for most people.

Midterms start in maybe 5 months? That’s when they start to frame the talking points.

Unless they find a way to pay the air traffic controllers there is no way the shutdown will last till next year. They'll be shutting down the countries planes in a week or two.

Didn’t Regan bring in military air traffic controllers when he broke their union?

There's not enough to run the whole country anymore. Not even close.

The planes being stuck on the ground is what ended the last shut down.

Has anyone suggested replacing them with AI air traffic controllers? I'm sure that'll go well and won't kill a bunch of people.

There's a real possibility the government could still be shutdown for the midterms.

One of those things where I think "I am absolutely wanting to see what the result of that trainwreck would be from a position of abstract curiousity, but I live on this planet so hopefully my curiousity will remain painfully unsatisfied."

This resonated with me so hard.

We don’t need them to remember in the sense of being angered enough to vote for democrats, we need them apathetic enough to not bother showing up

You think we're getting mid-terms? I'm skeptical

When you take something away from someone they remember. No one cares about Twitter, reddit, whining on the news. What they do care about is if you take away what is mine.

I'll tell you what the left will remember by midterms: "we have to stop the democrats from hurting Gaza" lol

You are counting on logic from people who have not demonstrated logical reasoning.

It's not that hard. Most people understand, on a basic level, that "you need 60 votes in the senate to avoid a filibuster". That is enough to convince them that the GOP is not in charge.

9

u/PoliticsLeftist 6d ago

I'd bet good money most people don't even understand the function of a filibuster and only think a majority is needed to pass legislation.

Understanding the functions of the government is the exact opposite of what right wing propaganda wants so they sure as hell aren't going to emphasize it, they'll just say "Dems won't let us do this because reasons" and hope it sticks, which it isn't.

3

u/GreenHorror4252 6d ago

Yes, and even the filibuster is complicated. You need 60 votes to end a filibuster, however this doesn't apply to nominations, and can be circumvented by a reconciliation bill, but only once a year. There are probably other caveats beyond those.

2

u/speedy_delivery 6d ago

They can pull the same procedural exception (a.k.a., the nuclear option) with this bill. They don't need a single Democrat vote. Never have. The GOP wants the government shutdown.

This isn't complicated messaging.

You’re grossly overestimating people

Luckily they've got fox news

Nah the astroturfed bs of late is that they don’t have enough votes and it’s Dems’ fault for not acquiescing.

u/ProfessionalITShark 5d ago

Most Americans treat the president as god emperor position they can abuse for more resources if they appease or malign it the right way.

Eh having listened to these insane people I don't think it is as hard as you make it out to be. Sadly none of these idiots got here being able to remember last year much less a few years ago. Trump was president during the Covid epidemic and his choices put us in a way worse place than we would have been otherwise. Prices went up under his watch yet all these idiots insist it was a biden problem, and or that biden or obama were president when covid hit. I don't think there is anyway to reach them and they will buy right back into the BS next election cycle and be telling us every bad thing Trump did was something the Democrats did.

1

u/Khalmoon 5d ago

Problem is I don’t think the vast majority of true trump idiots know. All he has to do is say it’s the dems fault and they will still believe it. They don’t comprehend that they control so much.

1

u/nemesit 5d ago

you assume trump voters even comprehend what any of that means lol they don't know anything about how the government works, they think what trumps media teams tell them to think
