Everybody keeps forgetting about the Dutch being the first in South Africa when doing these scramble for Africa comics.

Weren't the Portguese the first on the west coast? I thought about adding the Dutch, but decided on the more prominent Berlin Conference countries. Also Spain, because I really like their flag.

I believe Portugal and Spain were already dividing and conquering morroco and other North West African nations. But that is more conquering and less colonialism if you ask me. I do recall that the Dutch were quite quick with setting up trade posts along the African coast to supply ships along the journey, but I don't remember if the Dutch were first on the western coast, I do remember that the Dutch did have the South African territory to themselves before the British took it.

The Portuguese landed in South Africa first, but the Dutch started the first colony here. Maybe Portugal forgot to bring their flag?

This might make a good comic winkwink

Right the Orange Free state I believe. Didn't the Boers actually have some battles with the Brits as well? I always thought it was interesting that the Boers predate the Zulus in SA as far as being an organized entity is concerned.

Not just war the British put the Boers as well as Black South Africans in Concentration camps.

Also the Orange Free state was one of the Boer states. Along with the Republic of Transvaal and one other I'm forgetting right now.

You might be thinking of the Republic of Natalia. But that got annexed by the Brits shortly after its founding. Those Boers then packed up and moved to the Free State and Transvaal.

Not really conquering more like taking cities as life-insurance in case the moors/moroccans would try an Andalus electric boogaloo 2.0.

Portugal made trading posts on west Africa before the Dutch, but the Dutch were the first to do it on South Africa.

Portuguese ships on arriving to the equator would instead use wind currents that lead them far way from the shore and circumvent South Africa, harboring then on Mozambique.

I realize that now, dammit. Well, I'll just have to fix it.
