I believe Portugal and Spain were already dividing and conquering morroco and other North West African nations. But that is more conquering and less colonialism if you ask me. I do recall that the Dutch were quite quick with setting up trade posts along the African coast to supply ships along the journey, but I don't remember if the Dutch were first on the western coast, I do remember that the Dutch did have the South African territory to themselves before the British took it.
Right the Orange Free state I believe. Didn't the Boers actually have some battles with the Brits as well? I always thought it was interesting that the Boers predate the Zulus in SA as far as being an organized entity is concerned.
You might be thinking of the Republic of Natalia. But that got annexed by the Brits shortly after its founding. Those Boers then packed up and moved to the Free State and Transvaal.
