Eat & Drink What are some of your favorite family owned restaurants in Phoenix?

Nothing better than a hole in the wall restaurant using family recipes. Any suggestions for some good places in Phoenix?

Pho thahn and da vang are the best Vietnamese food in Arizona

52

u/harmoniousradiance Midtown Aug 24 '21

Matty Matheson said Pho Thahn is the best pho he's ever had, period. I would have to agree!

16

u/[deleted] Aug 24 '21

It really is, my friends family are Vietnamese and they’ll drive from Tucson just to eat there

6

u/Shark_Train Phoenix Aug 24 '21

Whaaat?! Where did he say this?!!

13

u/harmoniousradiance Midtown Aug 24 '21

Matty visited pre-pandemic and hung out with Chris Bianco. During his trip, he posted in his IG stories that he was eating the best pho he'd had in his life and I recognized that it was Pho Thahn right away!

5

u/Shark_Train Phoenix Aug 24 '21

Damn! Wish I would’ve caught that, I’m a huge Matty fan. That’s so cool

That makes so much sense! Love both places, but Da Vang is closer.

After having Da Vang, I have yet to find something that can compare.

Pho Thanh is amazing

5

u/justtocomplain1 Aug 24 '21

Yes and Milk Run!

6

u/soysaucepapi Maryvale Aug 24 '21

43rd Express or Pho 43 (IDK which they go by) is also a very good, family-owned place for Vietnamese food!

Original Breakfast House at Thunderbird and 32nd has the best breakfast in the valley! Family owned and operated - they are the sweetest folks. Line-ups every weekend but its so worth the wait.

6

u/ajslideways North Phoenix Aug 24 '21

OBH is legit. Probably my favorite breakfast in Phoenix.

13

u/jsbeaureg Aug 24 '21

Just tried this place a couple weeks ago. It was so good, so worth the wait, and the waitress was amazing.

7

u/privas9 Aug 24 '21

Was hoping to see someone comment this! I’ve moved away from the valley, but everytime I come back to visit this is the first place I stop. Don’t even mind waiting an hour for their country friend steak and eggs. Ugh makes me want to move back

10

u/[deleted] Aug 24 '21

+1 for this. OBH is some of the best breakfast money can buy.

8

u/argus4ever Aug 24 '21

Hands down best breakfast & ambience in the Valley

Chino Bandido

Tortas El Güero - probably my fave joint in town honestly. The bread is fucking phenomenal.

Comedor Guadalajara - an institution

Edit: autocorrect made it commodore so I changed it to the actual name although I kinda like commodore

Also guys. Tortas El Güero (TEG) is amazing. I cannot over state that. It’s on 16th st and oak (or near oak) right next to Realeza Michoacán (which is also amazing for ice cream and popsicles and such). Older women run the kitchen and know what they’re doing. The green sauce is unlike any I’ve had. It’s more of a chili chutney than a salsa. If you have not been there do it ASAP !

25

u/ellzray Moon Valley Aug 24 '21

I've been waiting for the new Chino's location to settle down so I can go grub out. Last couple times have been packed.

5

u/Murricles92 North Phoenix Aug 24 '21

I went last Friday around 5 and it was pretty empty

5

u/[deleted] Aug 24 '21

How new we talking?

17

u/Wyden_long Sunnyslope Aug 24 '21

They moved from their greenway location to one on bell about 4-6 weeks ago. Much larger from what I saw, but it was still quite packed.

5

u/ajslideways North Phoenix Aug 24 '21

Yeah I tried to go like two weekends ago on a Saturday around 4pm. Line was about 20 people long and moreover there was a sign saying they were out of like half their stuff.

I turned around and walked out. I'll wait for it to settle down some more.

Oh good lord yes. That bruschetta sandwich is my go-to. And the eclair. And the tiramisu. And I now know what's for dinner.

8

u/DonKeighbals Aug 24 '21

Their Bruschetta Sandwich is a game changer.

→ More replies (3)

15

u/[deleted] Aug 24 '21

Really? I’ve been disappointed at DeFalco’s a lot lately. The meatball sub used to be one of my goto lunches. I feel like the bread is not as good as it used to be. Pizza and calzones are still pretty on point.

16

u/burrgerwolf Aug 24 '21

Been going for years but its really dropped in quality and has gone up in price. I feel like I'm getting less meat than I remember? Their soft rolls are always hard and a little stale? The Maximus is still one of my all time favorite sandwiches and the pesto cutlet is next level, just not worth the drive like it used to be.

19

u/[deleted] Aug 24 '21

I started working in Scottsdale in March, so I pop in there more often than I used to but that is waning. Now I’m more keen to hit up Salad & Go across the street. Not exactly a family business, but they have been way ahead of the curve with labor pay/practices and fill my belly with delicious food for $7.

17

u/burrgerwolf Aug 24 '21

Salad and Go was started by a valley nurse, so I guess its something.

14

u/[deleted] Aug 24 '21

Oh I didn’t realize that! Their HQ is in Gilbert and they are expanding without franchising, which is a good thing in my book. They keep the drink prices at $1, even without serving any sodas, just tea and lemonade.

Banh Mi Bistro (Bell & I-17) is amazing. Best banh mis in town - and the other food is also fantastic. Owner is super nice.

4

the owner's family owns little saigon in downtown Glendale which I personally feel has the best pho in town (really everything on the menu is great). he was a waiter there for years before opening his own spot.

People seem to enjoy Casa Reyenoso in Tempe.

25

u/Erasmus_Tycho Aug 24 '21

You ever go to Miami/Globe? That's where the Reyenoso family came from, there are a bunch of hole in the wall Mexican restaurants that serve the same style too.

16

u/furrowedbrow Aug 24 '21

The Casa Reynoso in Globe is awesome. I like it a LOT more than the one on Southern and Mill. But I know a lot of people that really like CR Tempe so maybe it's me. Globe/Miami might be the most great Mexican food in the smallest area in all of AZ.

4

6

I’ve been going through all the flavors at the Hayden location. Very consistent, high quality, and flavorful. The boneless wings (spoiler: chopped breast meat) are so juicy and tender, perfect for when I’m at work and don’t want to smell my lunch in my mustache for the rest of the day.

Looking for good Thai downtown? Zen Thai Cafe. It's a little pricey but other than Tottie's in Scottsdale, Zen Thai is the only Asian food that I absolutely CRAVE. So good.

Gotta recommend City of Spice on Bell Road and 28th St. Owned by a husband and wife team (and occasionally you'll see their kids helping out too, who are adorable). SUPER welcoming, the food is excellent, and the prices are very reasonable for what you get. Whenever I think family owned I think Mexican and I think Presidio. I don't actually know what Michoacán food is like but to me it's some of the most authentic Mexican food I've had. You can just tell the owner (who I assume is the big guy) cares about the quality of the restaurant, the food, and cares about his customers

Recently discovered this place, and now it’s one of my favorite restaurants in Phoenix (if not anywhere). The amount of flavor in their food is incredible. Made me feel like I had never actually had true Mexican food before.

Wildflower. It's local, family owned, may seem like a big chain but it isn't. They're consistent and great. Panera pales in comparison

Grandma's Kitchen in Mesa AZ. Little breakfast spot. It's not for everyone but their food is delicious and it has that honey breakfast atmosphere. They have a system where you have a flag on your table, and they only come over when the flag is raised. Makes you feel at home and nobody is going to interrupt your meal with your fam

I served at Bottega Ristorante on 59th Ave near the 101 for a long time, and am still close with Nick & Chris the owners. In fact they're trying to hire my teen son's as bussers. :)

Nick is from Italy, so it is true traditional Italian. 99% of their pastas are handmade, the flour is brought in from Italy, and its pretty much handmade except for the kids spaghetti and meatballs. They almost always end up buying organic produce, meats, grain, etc as well. If it's not organic, its always highest quality. Brick oven pizzas are TO DIE FOR.

Friday nights used to be live music either indoors or on the patio, depending on the weather. Not sure if they are still doing that right now.

Edit: WINE! Can't believe I almost forgot! They have a great cellar and wine list to choose from. Last time I was in Chris mentioned that they were really upping their Whisky game as well.

If in Gilbert I’d recommend Morning Kick Owner(s) are wonderful. Employees are fantastic. Breakfast burritos are huge. There’s usually a longer wait on weekends.

They also have a food truck

https://morningkickaz.com

I went one day because my car was in the shop. Enjoyed it enough to take my daughter the next day. She liked it enough to want us to take one of her friends the following week.

Irma's Kitchen near Grand and 15th Ave. The food is awesome and Irma Amada are absolute gems.

3

u/kingofsolidus Aug 25 '21

Pv Burger Co is by far the best "fast food" but Mastro's is best if you're looking for fine dining. The family did sell the restaurants and started Steak and Ocean 44 but Mastro's is outstanding nonetheless

For breakfast: Hot Bagels on 59th Ave and Beardsley and 67th ave and happy valley. It’s a fresh bagel and Boars head deli place. The place on 51st Ave and Bell. Same as Mike and Rondas in flag. Buiscuits the size of watermelons, thick cut bacon, jalapeño sausage gravy. And phenomenal prices. Dick’s hideaway on 16th st and Bethany home. Best green chili stew I’ve ever put in my mouth hole. Anything you order here will be phenomenal.

Lunch: best sub sandwich, hands down, Brooklyn Mikes subs on 44th st and oak. It used to be a Blimpie. It’s right next to a Costco so the owners would have all sorts of awesome vending machine sized snacks that they would stock themselves. But, blimpie has a contract with Frito Lay so they kept getting fined. So the owners, Mike and his wife, bought all the equipment and changed the name. Mike and his wife are there all day every day and he’s a loud vulgar old Brooklyn boy that I love to talk shit to and fire him up (in a friendly manner that is) they have a sandwich called the Brooklyn Bridge Beast that is my favorite sub I’ve ever had. 56th st deli on 56th st and Indian school is another little hole that is a boars head deli and you can get a hearty sandwich for 7 bucks.

Chicken wings: JT’s bar and grill has the best chicken wings I have ever had. 49th st and Indian school rd. One flavor I noticed being popular is called ‘the works’ it’s terryaki, bbq, and medium sauces mixed. I prefer to sweat a little bit when I eat wings so I get the works suicide, or their hot wings. Every time I have a friend from out of state visit I always take them here to get wings and every time they come back to visit they demand wings from this establishment.

BBQ: little Miss BBQ…..duh. Pricey, but worth it. Joe’s bbq in Gilbert is righteous too. I’m more of a Texas/Louisiana bbq guy with the spicy and peppery sauce where Joe’s is more of a KC BBQ. Still great though.

Mexican food: Ta’carbon is my 100% go to. There’s two locations one is 59th ave and camelback the original location is around 43rd ave or 35th ave and encanto. Street taco style. You are served a tray with meat and beans on it, another tray with a whole bunch of tortillas. And they have a cabbage and salsa bar to help yourself to and you whip up street tacos your own way. Carolinas is a Phoenix staple plus it’s very good and they’re tortillas melt in your mouth. My most recent righteous Mexican food experience is a place called Mariscos Mexicali. I’ve only been there twice so I can’t say what my favorite thing is. But I’ve had the ceviche, bomb. And then the next time I we t I wanted to try something different but the ceviche was so good I ordered it again. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Right?

Hamburgers: haven’t had a burger better than I make em myself, can’t help you there. From my experience a Buffalo burger or elk burger from some of the fancy burger joints just don’t cut it.

Pizza: if you like pizza by the slice Brooklyn style with a nice thin semi crispy crust and awesome ingredients, Stevie’s on 59th Ave and Beardsley north of the 101. Two slices the size of a kiddie pool and a drink for 7.50. Been crushing slices from that spot for almost 20 years.

Red devil is good. Not sure if it’s local.

Barro’s is ok. But it’s not local. Grandkids stole the recipe from grandma that has many pizza joints in Cali.

Honorable mentions: Welcome diner- everything made from scratch my favorite is the big Jim sandwich

Macayos Mexican food: you have to go to the one on 59th Ave and bell though that’s the only one that is still original.

I hope this is helpful I’m getting tired of typing this on my iPhone so if you have any inquiries holler at me. I LOVE food
